Dead/Stuck pixel issue

Hey guys,

I have a Macbook (C2D) and unfortunately, today I dropped it - fell about a foot. Well, it was fine. A bit of plastic around the LCD popped out, but that just pushed in, and it's as good as new.

Except.. Ive now noticed what appears to be a dead or stuck? pixel. It may have been there before, but I was scrutinizing everything since the issue.

Basically, when the screen is white.. its a spot, that is whiter than normal. It exists when the screen flashes red, green, blue etc. However, when the screen is black, it's perfect.

Any ideas what this is, and how I can get rid of it? I've been reading up on dead pixels, which are apparently black.. so I don't think its this as such, though I may be wrong.


Any advice to save my baby is appreciated :)

It seems to be what's called a "hot" pixel, where its white-ish all the time. The color still 'works' in it, ie: the pixel changes accordingly to the color... but to a different shade.

And it doesn't seem to be one - it seems to be one pixel, a slight bleed to those around it.

Any ideas how to rid *this*. JPixelfix or w/e doesn't do anything.

PS: When its a black screen, it appears totally normal.

Just in case you dont know what it is, get something like a ball point pen, wrap the end with cloth as not to damage/scratch ur screen and gently press on the pixel with it.

Please please PLEASE!! do this only if you're confident in doing it, i've seen people botch it up in the past, but when done right, it generally fixes it.

Oh god... please don't do this. I can't count the number of "oh shi!" comments from people who have tried this and eff'd their screen or else caused even more dead pixels. It's so risky............

Risky, but does work. At my old workplace, our boss did a dogey deal for over 20 17" screens (worth quite a bit a few years ago) only to find out they were all 2nds because of dead/stuck pixels. A day of leaning over LCD panels and my trusty stylus from my palm pilot and a good portion of the stuck pixels were gone.

Having said that, one of the guys decided he'd do the same on his notebook and cracked it. As i said, only do it if you are 100% confident in doing it

Hey guys,

Big problem. I just noticed today, I've got ANOTHER one of these dead/stuck pixels. Just came out of the blue. Any idea why this is happening? I do admit it's starting to worry me.

I haven't got AppleCare (as in the extended thing.. but does it come with standard 1 year applecare when you buy a laptop??)

Should I contact? etc

I had a power surge in my house 2 days ago. I had my Westinghouse 22inch on. AFter the surge, I had 4 stuck pixels, all stuck in red. I just touched them with my finger and they disapeared. w0000t!

I just recently got a new MacbookPro, and was horrified to find a stuck blue pixel on the lower left of the screen. I googled up quite a bit on it, and found this site:

I tried unsuccessfully to use the movie file that flashes red green and blue to unfreeze it. Then I tried the pressure-with-a-cloth-and-stylus method, and surprisingly, it worked! I used a microfibre cloth and a Nintendo DS stylus, and managed not to screw up the screen further.

From what I've read on Apples replacement plan, they will NOT replace a computer/monitor based on a few dead pixels (an oversight in Apple's claim to quality, and one that should be addressed IMO). However, if there's more than one and they're in spots that you find distracting, you can probably get it replaced. Depends on how well you can argue that your computing is being significantly hampered.

Replacement stories vary. I received my MBP yesterday, and have one dead (as in black - really dead, not stuck and not fixable) spot pretty much in the middle of the screen. I had bought AppleCare with the MBP and indeed still have 18 months of AppleCare on my PB. They were very decent about it, the machine is being collected Tuesday, although I have another two and a half weeks to wait until its replacement is here.

Always worth asking, although I suspect I benefited from the LED screens still being pretty new.

My PB came with a stuck (green) pixel that never bothered me enough to try some of the suggested solutions (although I might now :)). There is a big difference in irritation factor between a stuck pixel and a dead dark hole though - I know, I've spent several hours looking gloomily at it!
