View Full Version : Sleeves: Neoprene vs. Memory Foam?

I did a quick search and don't think this has been explicitely discussed before. I am looking for a sleeve for the MBP, and came across two main types of materials: neoprene and memory foam. My friend has a memory foam sleeve for his iBook and it feels great, but apparently neoprene is what they use for wetsuits, among others.
So anyone know their main differences? pros vs. cons?

I'd be interested in some expert opinions on this, as well. I was looking at neoprene sleeves, but went with memory foam. I'm not quite ashamed to say that I bought it because it had a cool pattern.
But I digress. When I was looking around, I did see some bits stating that the memory foam was more protective. It's definitely cushy w/o being bulky. The neoprene cases I've seen don't look like they'd offer much shock absorption.
But what do I know? I've yet to find an article explaining the benefits of each.

i have a marware sleeve and it is neoprene, but that is because there are no memory foam cases with handles AND a shoulder strap.
if you find one, let me know!

I went with neoprene because I couldn't find a plain, black memory-foam sleeve for my 15" MBP easily.

I currently have Radtech's Glove, which is neoprene, for my 17" PB. I used the Rebound, which is memory foam, for my previous 15" PB. The memory foam sleeve is somewhat thicker, though not much. I put the sleeve in the laptop pocket of my Crumpler bag, so the neoprene sleeve is absolutely sufficient.
If you just want to "throw" the laptop in some non-laptop bag, I'd go for memory foam (with regards to the Radtech products, anyway) as it's thicker.

I bought a neoprene sleeve (an In-Case), mostly because I wanted a simple, inconspicuous sleeve without any patterns or 'panels' all over it. I hunted around a little for a memory foam sleeve (which I would've preferred), but the only one I ever remember seeing was in a store when I was in Dubai (and before I had my MBP) several months ago.
The neoprene sleeve is nice, mind you, but I'd have no issue shelling out money for a memory-foam based sleeve if I could find one I liked.

I just bought a neoprene sleeve today for under $23. It's a Tucano sleeve. I figured that it'll have good enough protection to keep my MBP safe while in my backpack. After I bought it and pulled my MBP out of my bag to put the sleeve on, the computer had a huge scratch across the top of the case. I was lucky that it was just rubber from the edge of the binder in my backpack. It wiped right off nicely. I might also snag a Speck case for the computer. I'd hate for this thing to get messed up after how much I paid for it!
