View Full Version : MR forums SLOW

It's about 12pm est right now and the forums are running REALLY slowly. It takes several seconds up to half a minute to load any single page.

There's about 3k users "online" right now. over 2.5k of which are "guests." An attack? or just crawlers slowing down the forum?

[edit]
N/m. As soon as I posted this. things started moving again...

It's slow for me too (no avatars has sped it up). My guess is 2.5k guest iPhoners beating up the server :D. Be interesting to see how high users go as we near the end of the week.

With the iPhone launch all previous records will be beaten! Don't doubt it.

It's gonna be a good time to go on vacation and not have to deal with the iPhone hoopla.:) I think I will take the weekend off, and most of next week too.

The forums are crawling for me, too. I'd imagine it's from the increased traffic for the iPhone. (well, obviously)

Luis

arn must better have a contingency plan for the well-being of MR, if the forums are crawling now, I don't even want to think on Friday. *Sigh* it is not even this way in MacWorld or WWDC...

Happy iDay Everyone!!

WIth all the hype, I think some forum problems are to be expected throughout the weekend. Wait until all the people are uploading unpacking pics and reviews later today.

Yup, it is slowwwwwww.

There's over 5,500 people online right now, and Forum Spy refuses to work (server too busy).

Very slow for me too. I am getting lots of "Waiting" messages. Hasn't timed out yet. Kind of sucks. :D

This is on two different computers, one Windows one Mac.

Forums are running ok on my side... so it must be a network issue somewhere in between.

Late in the week we actually finally made some changes that should prevent the forums from slowing down as much as they were... and stop locking out guests.

Nope, not just you or your connection. For me it occasionally times out, most of the time it's loading part of the page for minutes on end.

if you open the activity window in Safari, let me know what's taking so long to load.

It changes a bit, but most of them originate from images.macrumors.com...many of the images (e.g. emoticons and editor icons) and some of the js and css files.

edit: the really odd part is that for a few minutes, everything will not load and time out, and then completely turn around and be all nice and fast again, and repeat.

Same here, very sluggish, time outs and then a moment of speed. Thought it was my connection. but all other sites run as usual.

the problem I have is that pages don't load and just sit and timeout, or they work fine. I have to click a like 3, 4, 5 times before it loads. But when it finally loads, it loads fine. But, most links just time out.

And it's not my connection. It's just the macrumors site.

If you can open "Activity" in safari and see what is causing the lag, it can help.

alot of it is .gif images in the /editor folder, and also in the /vb/smilies folder... images all over, mostly .gifs too. I can screenshot it next time if you want, but there were about 21 gifs on this page that timed out.

I'll have to click/ re-load the same page at least 3 times but once it goes, it's totally fine. Also made me worry it was my connection but in at least three different physical locations/ networks, it was just MR and not any other site that had this issue.

:edit: As per Arn's request for geographic location and browsers:
Northern CA; Bay Area (more specifically, south bay-- say, near Cupertino).
Camino 1.5 has been giving me lotsa issues.
Went to Safari 2.0.4 and still some broken images and sometimes the pages hang, but not nearly the inability to access the forum pages as w/ Camino.

no. that's because the avatars are kept on a seperate server and it only syncs up every so often.

Sometimes. Other times, the pages don't load at all. The boards have been pretty nearly unusable all weekend. I haven't noticed any other problems on the net, just here.
