Yes, it is pretty easy process. Open up your machine, stick your PCI card in, screw it in, close your machine, then you are ready to go. If you are using OS X, it works automatically with some apps, but with OS 9, you'll have to install some drivers. Anyway, what exactly is the problem you are having?
Check the various SCSI card drivers available on http://www.versiontracker.com for Mac OS X.
If your SCSI card isn't listed there or its reviews aren't good, get a different one.
USB and Firewire scanners are much cheaper though than some SCSI cards. Take a look here as to what is Mac OS X native:
