Black bars, please help.

Okay, so here's the situation:

I've recorded some game footage from my PS2 through a video converter onto my iMac G5. So now I have video that looks like so:

Notice the black bars? Well that's what I'm trying to get rid of. HOWEVER, I can't get rid of them by stretching the whole video out, otherwise I'll lose quality. Is there some way to crop the canvas itself? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

BTW, programs I have: Avid Free DV, Quicktime Pro, and iMovie.

Once I install that it should show up in my effects palette right? Well it's not working, maybe because I have iMovie4?
