Recently, my Rev. A 500MHz TiBook has started to emit a high-pitched tone whenever my battery gets down to about 40%.

I have two batteries and they both seem to do it. Never happens with power adapter.

Anyone familiar with this?

Yes i am.
I believe that it actually has to do with a capacitor in the video card though.

While it is making that g-d forsaken sound, scroll down on a page, it will pulsate. Also it will change tones depending on the average color displayed.

I sent it to apple, and it was not fixed.

Hmmm...is it a capacitor that somehow wears out? This seems to be recent -- or did I somehow just fail to notice it?

Do the AlBooks do it to? A friend of mine is about to make the big switch if they release a mid-size PowerBook in the aluminum styling. He's a musical fellow who has a, shall we say, "discerning" ear. (That means that he spends most of his time in the subway with fingers firmly planted in his ears.)

do you still have the problem?

It's been a few weeks -- do you still have the problem? And is it only with old batteries or new ones too?
