Sorry if this has been covered explicitly already.. I've seen a number of people talking about getting a discounted phone prior to activating the iPhone. I was wondering if anyone has actually done this, or talked to any AT&T employees who have specifically said that it should work.

I don't see why not, but before I take the plunge myself, I'd like to hear if anyone else has actually done this (and, after 6pm today, if anyone has done this w/ any success.)

i just did it yesterday. used my upgrade to get a samsung sync as a backup phone. plus with the iphone data plan i will have unlimited 3G tethering using the iphone sim in the sync.

it's a pretty smart idea, and the guy at the att store seemed to have seen other people doing the same thing.

Well in about 4 hours I plan on getting a family plan with teh cheap/freebie phones then later getting 2 iPhones. I have been told that what I plan on doing is fine. That and getting the free/cheap phones seems like a smart idea.

if you want to use unlimited 3G tethering with your laptop, i would get the samsung sync. 24.99 after 50 rebate. worth it in my opinion as a backup phone/wireless modem.

I got a free RAZR V3xx the other day, signed up before I get the iPhone. I told the guy exactly what I was doing and he said it'd work fine. I looked at some of the other phones, but 3G tethering doesn't apply to me (no 3G in the state, whatsoever), so I opted for the RAZR (free after $50 rebate).

I would love to but I need a phone with no camera, for work.

Then you can't use the iPhone...?

I personally ordered a BlackJack on Tuesday night with my upgrade. Getting an iPhone today. Have a Sprint Treo 755.

Got all the bases covered for mobile web development :p (Boss has a Blackberry... just need an S60 device).
