EDGE - Only for email! :(

Well, EDGE is *great* at email. No problems.

However, I find the web and even the maps pretty disappointing. It's ok for that 1 time a month you *have* to find something now. Otherwise, I think the Safari portion isn't too useful, unless you're at home on wifi and then you have computer.

For email though, iphone and edge are great, but that isn't exactly 21st century.

I'm a little disappointed. I love apple stuff, but this thing is just ok so far.

I tried to tell people this... Surfing on such a small screen is not all cracked up to be is it....it takes a long time to get used to it.

A very long time - and finding sites that are set up for Mobile use. And getting used to it - it's not like being at home.

I rarely use my i-net - only if i have to have something, or i'm out and about and really have to have it. Same for email, only if i'm expecting something and i'm out.

I do use the apps on it all the time.....

Which is why i'm really not a target iPhone user :D

It seems the Edge experience depends on where you are.

It's not all that bad here in NY.

I agree it isn't something you'd want to do your main surfing on, but it is very useable.

My EDGE has actually been rather snappy. I loaded an 8 minute Youtube video fairly easily.

You have to know what you're getting into. It's NOT the same as surfing the net at home. I've been a Treo user (650 now 680) for a few years and small screen web surfing is something you have to get used to. And once you get past the small screen and limitations of mobile web browsing, it can be great - and useful.

The web browsing experience on the iPhone is better than that of the Treo, the wide screen option, tap to zoom and fringer flip scrolling are great.

HOWEVER, you cannot click to download a picture, video or PDF and save it to your phone. This is my big complaint. Currently on the treo I could download and save a video clip to my SD memory card. I can also click and download PDFs and pictures. Currently, on the iPhone you can view these items within the browser but cannot "save them" to your iPhone.

Bumber.

I'm even considering returning my iPhone because of this. I do it a lot.

I think people just have too high an expectation. For a first generation Internet device, it is awesome.

Just back from buying an 8 GB model from the Apple Store. The performance of EDGE was the only thing holding me back. I spent 20 minutes playing with a demo model on EDGE and it wasn't too bad. Certainly not as snappy as when I switched to Wifi but certainly workable and livable.

I have had no problems at all with my edge. It actually seems to be working g quite well. Its not as fast as my wifi but it moves quick. Google maps works great and surfing the web works well too. Youtube loads like a dream. As far as the safari experience goes I find it to work very well and again no problems. Posting this from my phone in wide format using two thumbs. Im personally happy as a clam. I also had no preconceived ideas as to how it would work and have never used the web on a phone.

For those of us who don't have a laptop and feel 'out of touch' with things when we're out of town, this phone is the best solution for it.

I DOUBT I'll surf the web with this thing a lot, but the little iPhone websites that HAVE popped up are great for getting quick information (movie times and the like). I used those with Edge and it was pretty damn fast!

I had no problem using Google Maps over Edge yesterday...

And I also used Youtube over Edge, which worked much quicker than I thought it would.

The interesting thing about Youtube is that it must know you're on Edge or WiFi, because the quality will differ. I watched the same video twice, once at home, once at a store, and the quality was less over Edge... again, which I don't mind, since it loaded just as fast as it did over my home connection.

Everything has it's limitations...

Yes, you can. It loads rather slow compared to Wifi, but it certainly works if you have the time.

I've been pleasantly surprised by the speed of EDGE, regularly getting over 200kbps speed. On my previous orange 3G device I got between 180k and 360k so there's not that much difference. Obviously HSDPA is a whole different ballgame but it's availability in the UK is pretty limited at the moment.

Nope. You use the YouTube app. on the iPhone, regardless of your connection. You can click YouTube links on the net and in email, and they'll take you into the YouTube app. too.

That is true, but the video quality on edge is so poor. but it does work.

That is very true. I dont use utube while on edge, but for most other websites, especially mobile sites, it is plenty speedy. I guess I am not part of the NOW NOW NOW younger generation that has to have instant gratification or they lose interest.

My edge is pretty fast here. I can get on websites within seconds and youtube videos play fine on it. It also depends on how many people in your area are on edge at the same time.

I even scrolled through a map to find a section of town in just a few seconds. This was like a mile of map I scrolled through. Always been happy with edge and my iPhone.
