To play with over the weekend....
3DOSX (http://www.acm.uiuc.edu/macwarriors/eoh2k2/3dosx/index.html) - 3DOSX is a file system browser that utilizes three dimensions to view directory hierarchies. It supports a full range of file system actions, such as copying, labeling, creating new folders, and ejecting disks.
Goliath (http://www.webdav.org/goliath/) - WebDAV Client which lets you connect to Apple iDisks much quicker than via Finder.
mlDonkey (http://www.freesoftware.fsf.org/mldonkey/) - unofficial eDonkey (http://www.chaosmint.com/edonkey) client for Mac OS X. Works more reliably than the official client... and with a web interface.

3DOSX looks very nice indeed.
But I can't get the disk image to mount! Disk Copy says it's an error 192. Dagnabbit!

The monkey app requires X server (whatever the hell that is) to be installed, maybe update the link to inform people like me that it's a waste of time to download and atempt to run as I don't have X server installed.

The 3DOSX is very nice indeed; however, it is a ripoff of previous attempts.
If anyone remembers a few years back, Intel and Excite.com were pioneering a high bandwidth site called ExciteExtreme. If offered a similar style of navigation to the World Wide Web.
But, seeing as @Home Networks killed Excite.com, and Excite is all but a shell of its former self... that's OK...
But the 3D navigation thing is still a rip.

That 3DOSX is freakin' awesome!
But usefullness? Hm.... I dunno.
atodd, I mounted the disk image with no problem. Try again!

Yup, I tried again. And again, and again.
Still no luck! Dern.
Anyone got mirrors (of the actual app, not the dmg file)?

Anyone else tried it on a PBG4 400?
It runs unusably (is that a word?) slow on my TiBook w/ 640 MB RAM...hmmm
Goliath runs well, and is MUCH faster than iDisk through the Finder.

its your graphics card. they say on the website that it will run slow on a ati 128 rage card that is in the old powerbooks.
ive been reading all the documentation trying to figure out why it wont launch on my computer and noticed that little bit about the card.

Are you referring to my Rev A TiBook or the guy with the Pismo...or both of us since we have the same card?
That thing must be heavily hardware dependent if a faster CPU still can't handle it.

im referring o both of you since you both have the same card. apple used that card for way to long (from 1998-2001 i believe).

Actually it was only since the Pismo which came out early 2000, before that, the lombard had a rage lt+ or something to that end. And I referring to laptops only, I know they were used for a longer time in desktops, but it was mentioned cause of laptops which why its 2000.

actually thats not true. i know for certain that the lombard from 1999 had the same card (as that is the computer i am on now. and i was pretty sure the wallstreet model (1998) also had the same card (another computer of mine.)

Dude! That 3DOSX thing is freakin' awesome! It chugs on my 933 when fog is tuned on though.
Oh, what the...
It's running in the background as I type, and it's still obeying my key strokes! It's going like a frog in a sock! Ha ha ha! Too funny...
Anyone managed to get 'outside' the pool? It doesn't handle it very well.

3DOSX is ok on late iMacs and iBooks, to a point.. only for amusement. It's cute, like about every hollywood "computer" representation I've seen (like the one of 'Unix' in Jurassic Park), but it has no true functionality of Finder.. just a few observations:
1. No way to move files between windows.
2. Info window useless, no way to change file application associations.
3. Becomes incrementally slower with each new level opened.
4. No way to have parallel platforms -- single level only up or down. The analogy would be a Finder which only let you open drawers or retreat to their parent level, but couldn't have multiple drives or multiple drawers opened from the same window.. this makes it essentially useless.
5. Limitation on heigth of system. Since it's essentially vertical, at around 10 levels 'high' into a directory structure, it passes out of the ceiling of the 'pool?' and the graphics becomes all screwed up and you lose the graphic thingy needed to return down to the previous level.
6. Draws many jpg thumbnail icons screwed up.
7. Color of platforms seems to be arbitrary. Should go off Finder preferences... even texturemapping finder window backdrops to the disk as an option.
8. No themes.. why a swimming pool? Some people would like something with fewer perceived dimensional limitations.. since it's 3d, why not the black of space with stars and planets? lol..
It's just a cute toy to wow your Windows geek friends.. not really a serious attempt at a Finder replacement.

Xapplimatic: that was my impression at first. just a neat little toy. but after reading the bulletin board on their website i changed my mind. people are using this to replace their finder. and all of the things you mentioned have been mentioned before and are being worked on for the next release (april something). i encourage you to go to the website and read all the comments, there arent many so you can actually read everything. people are really making a lot of good comments and it sounds like the creators are very responsive.

I want to see that next release before I say anything. As of now this app is nice, but totally useless. It's not near Finder functionallity... Nice try though.

i havent used it yet (im 500 km away from my mac), but the reason it wouldn't be really usable is because it is trying to make a 2-dimensional screen appear to be 3-dimensional. it just doesn't work. if we had some sort of 3-dimensional monitor hooked up to the computer (think hologram [or is it holograph?]), it would totally kick ass.
just imagine being able to manipulate files just by pointing and touching the 3d holograms with your finger....only then would this 3dosx app be truely useful. but i suppose it does have a few uses even in this limited form (i love makin pc users drool over my mac hahaha) :D

If you Don't enough vram the card has to dump and reload all the textures every frame. The same thing will happen if you try to play unreal tournament with hirez textures on a 6meg card. You have to count in FPM(Frames per minute)

I put that 3DOSX on my iBook just for the fun of it. It runs okay...but twisting and turning wheels around to find files is way too slow. Does anyone else notice when you pull down a Finder menu or pull the dock up from the bottom or launch a program like Appleworks, etc over it, the 3DOSX window displays a weird green behind the finder menu and the dock and does not go away until you click back on the 3DOSX window? Maybe I don't have the right graphics card...but I see someone is running it on a Pismo so this iBook should run it okay.
No way is it as fast or good as the OSX finder at least on my iBook. It does wow my Windows friends though...now what is up with the green shawdows that clutter behind the menus and even the program windows?....any ideas or has anyone put this on their Mac to play with it and have seen the same thing?

Acually amb the issue is the Rage 128 mobility cards, they only have 8 mb vid mem, and apparently the rage OpenGL hardware is lacking compared to the nvidia cards, the latest Ti and i Books have a related card, ie lower vram then the desktop cards, and I think that the overall problem is that that backgroung image is a freeking monster

It seems to stop at about 15 steps. Does anyone else get this also? That was when I backed straight out.. it might do something different if you climbed switchbacking...?
Pretty fun program despite it's limitations!

I loaded 3DOSX on my TiPB, played around with it and then threw it away. Its an interesting app, but not all that useful.
There needs to be a more intuitive way for doing 3D file browsing, and these guys got started in the right direction. Hopefully it will evolve a little more.

it's nothing more than eye candy, and relatively functionless eye candy at that. That said, it is one of the coolest looking file browsers I've ever seen.

3DOSX is an app, and not a replacement for the Finder (yet). Therefore you are experiencing these problems. Though it will be interesting to see if they can find a way to replace the finder..... hmmmm...

I installed this and added all the effects.
Fog, anti-ailiasing and whatever else there was... I forget.
I have a new iMac flat-panel 800Mhz.
It runs very smoothly and it integrates with a wheel-mouse, quite well.
I almost got out of the pool, but got scared... so I closed down some of the folders.
It definitely needs much work, but has promise.
Take care,

Are you sure it was a Rage 128 cause I am certain that it made its first appearance on the portable level with the Pismo cause I know people who both own a wallstreet and a lombard, both dont have it and both got theirs right before they were replaced with the later model. A previous ATI card is in the Lombard and Wallstreet, but in the case of your Lombard check out Apple System Profiler, you should have a video card that is 8 Mb, but its not the Rage 128 cause it was never offered on that model. Go here

thats the info on the lombard's specs.

And its quite fun too. It's called fuzz clock and available from versiontracker.
You can shut off your standard apple clock and replace it with a fuzzy time clock that displays the time as, for example "twenty past nine."
Pretty darn unique. And cool when cute girls look at your powerbook/tibook/ibook to get the time while you're working in coffeeshops.

Thanks Rower. Lemon, I wasnt tried to sound mean about it, but its impossible for the Lombard to have come with the Rage 128, it only came with the 8 meg ATI Rage Pro LT. Sorry, either you dont have a lombard, or you are just misinterepting specs or something.

Everything in /System/Library/Extensions should be owned by root:wheel. I noticed a few of mine were not including IOStorageFamily.kext
From a Terminal window enter:
