Im a PC user that's planning to switch to a Mac really soon. The only thing I'll really miss about my PC, however, is KaZaA and all the free downloads and stuff. Is there anything for the Mac that can remotely compare to KaZaA, or will have to give up all that free downloading?

Thanks!

Mlmac. It accesses the kazaa network along with E-donkey(another alternative to kazaa) And is set to work with numerous other p2p protocols in future releases

In a word no, there are alternatives, Limewire and such, but none of them come anywhere near close to KaZaA, in terms of content and ease of use. You could run KaZaA on Windows under Virtual PC ;)

edit: hmmmm....looks like I'm outta date, see posts bellow.

That one is called mlMac and it will allow you to access the eDonkey and KaZaA.

www.limewire.com

This one works well too. I use both and can usually find anything I am looking for.

Jamie ol' boy, you are behind the times, Mlmac runs the kazaa network now.

Do'h! Ah well, ignore me then :p  I'm just an old man (19 yrs old!) set in his ways, K-Lite on Windows kicks some serious arse for file sharing.

Ok, i know i'm gonna get flamed for this but kazaa has sucked for me recently, by kazaa i meann both klite on a pc and mlmac . Whenver I try to find music I get soooo many fakes its not even worth looking there for me....Limewire, which isn't all that great but all the songs i get from there are usually the right songs. just something to think about

I use Giftbox (http://sourceforge.net/projects/giftbox/) (and iMesh in Virtual PC if I really need to) for downloading music.

Acquisition (http://www.acquisitionx.com/) used to be good, but now it always downloads really slowly for me, and doesn't always find much.

Limewire is nowhere near as slow or unstable as it used to be, but I still haven't had much luck with it...you might, though--try it, at least.

it's all about giFT baby...

http://gift.sourceforge.net

It's got gnutella, OpenFT and FastTrack (Kazaa) capabilities...open nap is being worked on....you just gotta compile it yourself, but there are instructions you can find here: http://gottsilla.net/forums in the giFT forum

BTW, thay is a BITCH to install I STILL haven't got it to get FastTrack working (ARG)maybe I can do it this weekend...

mlMac and Gift using Fast Track is the only way to get Real KaZaA.

Don't forget about Bit Torrent!!! Where else can you download tv programs like Buffy, Angel (when they were on), Stargate SG1 and Enterprise before there even on the TV!!

I agree that mlmac it probably the best p2p for the mac, cos it does Kazaa, eDonkey AND BitTorrent in one, now thats what i call a bargain!

Or you could use iTunes and actually be honest about the whole thing... :)

And there are rumours about spyware. Besides it never works for me, the program hates me.

mIMac is rather buggy, sometimes to get it working you have to reinstall it, first by removing the file in applications and then its folders inside Application Support thats inside Library in your home directory.

Then reinstall it allowing it to update itself with the server again. BUT if you have files that were downloading you can nearly say goodbye to them. Because if you saved them and put them back inside mimacs temp folder, it won't see them unless you start to download the exact same file so it can resume it.

I try not to have more than 15 files downloading at the same time since its then that i encounter problems.

I tried out mlnet a few days ago. Nice looking interface...for a BETA!

Don't ever try to put trust into a P2P beta app. When I tried it, my download list did not always refresh, you could not click and delete old downloads (i.e. common sense was effectiveless), and (when I tried it) there was no way to tell how many hosts/connections you had.

mldonkey works better, even though it takes a while to set up manually. It uses one window, which happens to be your browser. The interface takes about 30 minutes to get used to. Once you are used to it, you are set. It can also connect to the same networks as mlnet.

I'm glad there's no Kazaa for Mac. We don't have to worry about pesky things like spyware. Of course, that doesn't mean P2P is non-existent on the Mac (and let's face facts, Limewire sucks). While Xlife's Acquisition is nice, it's still only a Gnutella client.

I recommend Poisoned (http://gottsilla.net/software.php?site=poisoned). It uses GiFT (which has already been mentioned in this thread) for searching Fast Track (Kazaa), Gnutella (Limewire), and GiFT's own network. The interface is simple and app works very well for me (even under the Panther Beta). It's great because you can set the preferences so that downloaded songs are copied right to iTunes.

BTW, congrats on the switch! :D

You know what, don't complain about download speeds, more then likely your getting something for free.

Wait for it and then enjoy.

Look I have already posted my tip in the other thread, go to the thread, look at my tip, see if works.

I'm not going to post it here, because this thread should have died.

Kill this thread already.

A thread on P2P is great. Considering it's always changing and evolving, ONE thread is a good source of info for all to share. Just ONE!
