ok I let my friend use my ipod for a night, Im on vacation and a few of my friends came up for a few nights and I was going to chill with a girl this night and one of my friends said they were just going down to the arcades and asked to borrow my ipod for night. I let him and he called me up a few hours latter saying something was wrong, I assumed it was just that it had frozen. So latter that night when I went home I got it back from him and it was completely off I pressed a random button to turn it on and after the apple sign it showed a folder and then turned right back off, tried again and it did the same thing. Now I thought maybe it was the battery that it was to low. I charged it over night to full and still same exact thing in morning. Then tried restoring the thing with the ipod updating thing and clicking "restore" this also did no help at all. Then I read online that letting all the power drain from the ipod then charging it back up might work, tried this and again nothing changed. Now I just tried again with the restore thing and again nothing worked. Before you ask my friend says he didnt drop it or anything like that(now obviously he COULD be lying but I believe that he didnt) he just said it randomly shut off and did what its still doing now. Also I didnt ever put something on the ipod besides music straight from itunes. Oh ya and this is an 10gb old style ipod(NOT one of the new ones, I bought this about a month before they updated them). Ive LOVED this thing and badly want it working again. Back home in Boston I live right next to an apple store but Im on vacation for the month no apple store any where around here for me to go to ask whats up. SO HELP ME OUT GUYS!

did you try resetting the iPod (connect the iPod to your computer/power adapter, toggle the hold switch then press and hold the Play/Pause and the Menu buttons until the Apple logo appears)?
did you update the firmware? (the latest version for the old iPods should be 1.3)

if you tried that and it still doesn't work:
connect your iPod to a built-in FireWire port, reset the iPod by doing what's written above, immediately after the apple logo appears on the screen, let go of the menu and play buttons, and press the previous and next buttons until the 'do not disconnect' message appears on the iPod. If it mounts on the desktop, then restore the iPod using the software updater app.
If it doesn't work try that again a few more times.
If it still doesn't work, then take it to your nearest Apple Store or something, because it may need to be repaired.
