my favorite computer system.
Happy Easter/Passover :)

I've been following Macrumors for a long time, perhaps two years. I have posted here occasionally in the past, but for some reason I never could make a habit of visiting the forums or posting regularly, like some other forums I visit. And unfortunately, I've been quite busy with school work recently, too.

Anyway, hello everyone! I hope to switch to the Mac soon!

Hi! I just switched over in January to Mac after hating them all my life because I was ignorant and did not see why they were better. Then a friend in my computer class that is an absolute computer genius showed me why he carries an iBook with him everywhere. Well, I like the hard drive organization so much where each application is contained in one folder and switched. I am currently in the process of signing up for ADC and will use my discount on a new 15" Powerbook superdrive.

...since I registered. But I have been a lurker since about two weeks ago when I actively started participating in the discussion.

Used to have a TiBook 667, but sold it because the shell cracked and generally behaved badly (of course I could have treated it nicer...) sold it and bought a kick-ass sager pc... It didnt really work as a portable, more like a "moveable", but the hardware was great just thought the OS sucked.

Unfortunately, it was stolen. If anyone sees a blue sager laptop in Sweden, it is most likely mine. (veeery few sagers in sweden)

My school then subsidized a purchase of an IBM X31. Very nice. Unfortunately I miss the Mac. Really want to get the new 15" 1.5 GHz Powerbook. Wish I had the cash though. RIght now I'm a business management graduate student at the stockholm school of economics so I'm kind of strapped for cash. Ah well, *sigh* my time will come eventually...

I'm newbie...

I want to be a part of Mac community 'cause is like a family.

I miss a little bit a colour Apple (I hav a stick on my car), but my new G4 (very very glamour) is fantastic.
I read about a possible new realese of Tiger OS...
The next, perhaps, will be cougar or lion...

I'm sorry if my english is not very good... :o

Hello,

I'm another 'lurker' – I often come and have a look at whats going on so I thought i'd join in.

First mac I used was (I think) an SE back in '88/'89 (I was about 10!), that my dad used to bring home from his printers to practice with (when print had to go digital). Now I use them daily for graphic design work.

Cheers, m.

I was on another discussion board for over four years and I had to leave under some sad circumstances.

I have visited this website and forum for over a year now and decided to finally sign up and start contributing to the mac rumour community!!!

Thank you for the welcome.

well, here I am. I used to be a fairly hardcore machead as a kid & teenager. I started out on a MacPlus in the late 80s & when I graduated from high school in 1994 the computing lab was still full of SE/30s (that's where I learnt Pascal). As a kid (I think I was 11 or so) I read John Sculley's autobiography cover-to-cover several times--I can still remember the emotional scenes he describes when Steve Jobs decided to quit Apple--very heart-wrenching! ;) I also used to get Macazine every month & read those several times over too.

Naturally I enrolled in a computer sci degree at uni upon leaving school, & much to my joy we spent the entire freshman year on Macs too (LCs, IIRC) learning this bizarre language called "Gopher" before returning to my beloved Pascal. I did well that year, but as a sophomore we "graduated" to peecees which did not particularly please me... I got booted out at the end of the year due to failing about half my classes, mostly the maths ones & the compsci theory--ironically I scored a higher distinction in human-computer interaction and I did very well in Unix programming. (I still harbour a deep affection for any shell, & Linux... if I can't use a Mac I think I'd rather have bash than Windows.) Thus ended my attempts to become a complete & utter nerd...

I returned to uni a couple of years later as an Arts student & wound up with a first class honours degree in history, & although I retained my internet addiction which began in my compsci degree, I'd more or less lost my hardcore interest in macs, although I kept using them because the Arts faculty at my uni was the only one to retain & update Macs. (Thank god!)

My former geek-level interest has returned this year, however, thanks to someone giving me a Performa 6400/80 & me trying to update it to be as useable as possible, before realising I was going to go insane if I kept trying to use it as a web browser & decided to get myself a $400 iMac DV 400 with some souped-up RAM & OS X (I'm still a student, now onto a PhD in cultural studies, living off a scholarship, so my funds are limited). The Performa has been retired but as I managed to find some old software for it (Word 5 & Hypercard 1.1, among other things) I may well end up using it to type up my thesis since I'm pretty sure that I'll not be tempted to procrastinate by playing online whilst using it :p I want a 512MB RAM upgrade for my iMac along with Jaguar (I've only got 10.1.5 atm) & an iPod... hmmm.

Doubtless I will probably be mostly lurking here as I have been for the past couple of weeks or so, but I do enjoy all the speculation over Apple's marketing ideas & product development, as well as revisiting the past (too bad there isn't more activity in the Mac Collectors forum). Anyway I just thought I'd say "hi" & possibly meet somebody else who's read John Sculley's autobio... ;)

I like reading the posts on MacRumors. I think it's really fun, however, to get involved in what is being discussed.

I like talking about politics and what upgrades Apple is/is not going to release.

It will be hard to find anyone here to hates MS more than I do. More out of principle than anything else. I just think they are a unethical to-the-bone company. Machivelli would love them.

have only recently found the site, have no idead what i'm in for.

currently cursed with a win-doesn't 98 box from hell. actually two of them. but they were legacy purchases that came with the new business.

just waiting for the g5 revision and hiho, hiho, it's off to the tip with monseigneur gates and his false promises and graven idols.

also have a g3/333 powerbook which has served me faithfully for five years from new. damn winwon't98 system won't speak to it or the original ibook and i can't be bothered delving into the mysteries of c:windoze/mabe/work/one/day/wherethef@&$isanythinginhere?.givemeyourcash
as i am updating come the g5 revision. buying the second revision of my macs has served me well for years, except the Lisa whose hard drive cracked, repeatedly.

cheers all.

Well I'm a newbie to this site and to Mac in general. I only found this site just this week and decided to join. So far, its pretty great and informative.

Well, lets see, I've been using PCs most of my life and have only recently (7 months) been exposed to Mac in work when we bought a G4 and sometime after, a G5. Its pretty great with the ease of use and configurability.

So i'm learning.., slowly but surely..!! If i have any probs, I'll definitely be posting. :D

Hello.

I have just taken the plunge from the world of microsoft. My last wipe & install of a win2kpro box put me over the edge.

Orderd a G5 1.8 & a 20" from apple, they say it will not be delivered before the 28th of this month. So I'm just going to hang out here until then.

I've been a serious windows user for years, and a casual user of Debian & SuSE for a couple of years.

I think I'm going to get the best of both worlds in OS X, not sure why I did'nt make the switch a while back. Maybe because of hardware misconceptions, and not actually making detailed price comparisons.

To quickly introduce myself...
I have been a die hard Windows user for the last 12 years. I used to take every possible opportunity to point out how I thought Macs were "inferior." A few months ago, a friend of mine finally got me to use a 12" PB. I have since bought one, and I don't think I'll EVER go back to Windows. Macintosh is the greatest computing platform ever. Period. :)

I joined because I love macs. I switched from a pc to an eMac in February and I honestly don't see how Windows continues to sell when apple quite obviously makes the best computers and operating systems. Plus their iPods are just the sweetest thing ever. I also joined, and this is the main reason why, because my boyfriend is always on MacRumors and I wanted to see what was so enticing about it. And now I do.

Howdy.

Aside from a trash-80, my Mac LC was the first computer I ever had.

Anyways, it was a while after that before I had the pleasure of owning a Mac again, although I've been troubleshooting them at work for a few years now. I've now perchanced across a few that are now waiting to become a part of an Xgrid cluster. :)

Macs:
-Dual G4 500MHz. 544MB ram (soon over 1GB). ATI Radeon 8500 + Dual 17" Studio CRT's (SWEET!!). Panther. Still cranks out FCP projects nicely. :D
-B&W G3 450MHz. 256MB ram. 17" Studio CRT. Panther. Hums like a dream. :) (Picked up two of these from a school, plus 3 Studio CRT's for $250!)
-iBook G3 366MHz. 64MB ram. 10.1. Was dog slow, then the HD died. Now it's dead dog slow. But believe me, it will live again.
-Mac LC. I never could part with the little guy. Still System 7 (which, according to the documentation, RULES!) Might take a while to back-port Xgrid to a non PPC proc, though. ;)

One day, a G5. Or G6. Depends on when I run into Bill Gates wallet at the 7/11 we don't frequent.

Rock!

Hello there! I've been a Mac user (end and professional) since '87 when my Dad bought an SE. Played Airborne and Tetris for hours. Since then I've owned or procured (freebies/donations :)) Mac SE, PM 6100/60, Mac II fx/c, Performa 64??(can't remember), Powerbook 145b, Powerbook 3400c/200, G3 233/MT, G3 266AV/MT, and my current Quicksilver 867.

My current area of expertise is Web development and Graphic Design, more so the later.

As for the forum, I've lurked for a couple years, but decide to register when I heard about the 1,000,000 post contest. Submitted a few tars, nothing special.

As for experience I've upgraded or change/repaired most of the parts in all of previously stated machines. From batteries to drives. Still no MB swaps or proc upgrades. But that's in the future. Currently working on broken mouse clicker on the PB 3400c, and adding an older 8x Yamaha external CD-RW to the space in my Quicksilver in place of where the Zip would be (suggestions?). I'll be happy to answer questions, that is of course if I can.

I'm very happy to have joined/joining such a great community. Great discussions, even some totally off the wall, but we're Mac users right! :)

Forgot: I have an old PC to remind me of all the reasons my Macs are SO great!

I feel like I'm coming out of the closet.
Hi, I'm stu...
I'm hooked on Macs.
I last used my Mac......Now!
I have used Mac's since 87, Never a real IT wanabe. I have always loved them because they were easy. Although system 7 almost sent me to the dark side. I love this forum, THANKYOU TO ALL THE PATIENT EXPERTS who answer my silly uniformed questions. I had a Mac Plus for 10 years, then a power computing 150mhz, a dual 450 (still), a couple of old imacs from my buddies office for the kids, a new 12" 1.33 (i've fallen in love with) and a new eMac 1.25ghz for the kids (love worldbook). Just got 2 Airport Express up and running with cable modem. Life is good!!! Hoping for a tricked out dual g5 2.0 from Santa. I have a lot of old family 35mm slides, and analog video I want to DVD in a big way.
I find I am loud and obnoxious so take me with a grain of salt. I know little to nothing about WHY my Mac is great, other than it is easy and fun to use. Not because it is a Unix, Multi-threading, V12, fuelinjected, sexbox. So I leave it to you to educate me. AND I WILL PAY IT FORWARD!!!

You'll need to have 500 posts (for the love of God don't spam the forums though!) before you can have an avatar. If you just spam (post meaningless crap like 'me too' or 'that's funny', or posts that contain just a smily) you may wind up banned.... fair warning.

My mod power were taken away from me after some of my haters launched yet another attack .. and the admins and other mods didn't stand on my side .. victim of false accusations and lame management .. they are the ones who lost ..

That still really bugs me, it wasn't even respectable members who were complaining about you as a mod. It was just n00bs who had no idea of the TOS or the basic guidelines Spymac has.

I'm hit up this site not too often, but you coming over got me to register. It sucks that something that hairy happened, but you will come out on top of it. There are a lot of P.O.'d people over there, and I am too.

BTW I was always a fan of your strait to the point. Doing tech support all day for a living, it was nice to see someone actually say what they wanted to.

Keep the work up man!

It is good to see some of the good ole bunch coming over here .. and people here have not to worry .. I trained them well: they won't spam or disrupt anything ..

I guess people over there wanted me to sugar coat every note or reply .. and wanted me to be nothing but a mod .. but I refuse to do both .. as an unpaid volunteer I think I was allowed to have fun there too and seeing how much modding the site needed there was no time to coat every request to abide to the rules in sugar and cream ..

Some of my haters were ole and some new .. didn't matter to me .. violate the rules and I will act ..

Too much sugar is never good. I can't stand it. If they want mods to act like employees, then they better pay them as such. Oh well, your out of a weird situation now and allowed to be yourself. I guess that kind of freedom is worth it in this instance

Heh I dunno right now I am at a cross road! Spymac's ok and all but they do have a lot of bureaucracy going on and with all these new members I haven't been seeing hardly any threads about actual mac stuff like their used to be years ago. Plus they are totally leaving us Jr Gallery Mods out of the loop which really is starting to bother me, and Kristie doesn't seem to be able to do anything about that :( . Anyways will see I am gonna try hanging out here a bit now :) Just cause Mertzen and tons of other good members are here :)

Well, I will have to consider once my subscriptions leave. I just got updated over and over again because I went hosting. Thinking about bailing, just for the hosting. Only up about 90% of the time, which is pretty bad. Well, I've liked macrumors for a while, but I'm also pretty heavy @ MacMod.com. I never bothered registering here before though. Well, I think a lot of people are thinking the way I am right now, because the gestapo has stepped in.

Well, I hope this is still the official newbie sticky...

I just got my 12" powerbook last month and it has all the capabilities that I've ever dreamed of... I pretty much used it for engineering purposes (Matlab, CAD stuff, Word) and some personal things. Overall, I'm really glad I got it.

I've been lurking around this forum many months before I decided to switch to Apple. Anyway, I'm a student in New Orleans. Yeee haw...

Carry on...

Hello, I'm new. I've posted around a bit already...

Erm... what to say... Well, I have a 550 MHz Powerbook Ti but am getting a G5 soon (*drools all over herself*).

Lessee, my history with Macs... We had an Apple IIe when I was a kid. I'm not sure I dealt with them much again until high school, but I don't know what all our computers were when I was a kid; they were just computers. And it's not like they had OS X or Windoze or whatever. So high school, we had them in journalism--beige... My main memory of them is everyone in class making car crash and breaking glass noises on them all day. I saw them again a little in college journalism but didn't use them much at all. Had daddy's PC at home. We went through a few PCs... I'm still ticked that he threw out the 486, heh. We had a game for that. But I remember he had one that you couldn't turn off because to start it, you had to turn the HD by hand...

Anyway, then I started working where I am now. We had G4s... blue then, whaddyacallit, the darker blue... and CRTs... running 8.6 and then moving up to 9.2 until we switched to 1.8-GHz G5s this year. (*Picks herself up off floor*) All anyone uses is Word, Notes (ugh), and Imploder, although I use Dreamweaver and Photoshop, too, so it's WAY too much computer for us here. But I won't complain. :)

Anyway, that's my life story. Glad to be here.

But I also have an Apple IIC, an Atari 400 PC, 386 PC, Atari 2600 and 7800 consoles plus a growing collection of game carts, and my early 1980s Nintendo Game & Watches. Just bought 11 Atari 2600 games off eBay, including Crystal Castles and Q*bert!I'm partying like it's 1982.:D

Hello
Just registered not too long ago and figured I might as well introduce myself.
I signed up for this forum because I've just recently purchaced a mac (12" iBook - should arrive sometime next week - I can't wait!) and this seemed like a nice Mac-related community.
This shall be the first Mac I've owned in quite some time (must be seven or eight years now) but I've owned two Macs previous to the iBook - a Mac Classic (which I used as a young child - 'twas my first computer and I had my first taste of the internet with that computer) and a few years later I got myself a Performa 6100 (?) which I held on to until 1996 or 1997.
Got my iBook partly because I am intrigued by OSX but also because everyone I know who owns a recent Mac (Powerbooks, iBooks and the like) seem to love them quite a bit - there must be something great about these machines and I don't want to be left out. Of course, the student discount was a nice bonus as well.

yep, that's me.

I've been a macrumors member for less than a week.
I joined because I was desperate to find answers to a recent problem.
My 23" cinema display just formed a vertical blue line down the screen. I bought it new a year ago and this just happened. : (

I am a graphic designer / art director in Louisville, KY – home of Maker's Mark, the Derby and Muhammad Ali. I've been laid off 3 times from ad agencies, but have finally found a promising job. Why do I stay in this business? Because I love it.

Once you go MAC . . .

Well I have been reading this site on and off for about a year (I am a PC user flirting with moving to the Mac platform). I know how die hards feel abotu PCs, and I grew up on them so I dont share the same bias. However I really do love the Mac Powerbooks. Although they havent been updated in a while and the smart thing to do seems to be to wait until the expo in January to make a decision on one.

I primarily use my computers for Music, E-mail, the Web, word processing, and burning DVDs - which I think will be the longest part of the learning curve.

I am switching from a full desktop to a laptop within the next 2-3 months (would have preferred xmas but since Macs are going to be upgraded in January and PCs have some new things coming out in Q1 05 as well - I am going to sit tight).

Just wanted to introduce myself. I just got my iBook about a week ago. At first I was a little worried about the move, but now I'm definitely glad I did. I can't see myself going back. I still have the 5 year old compaq computer downstairs, running win 98. My mom mainly uses that now. I bought the iBook mainly for school. It's much easier doing work and being able to bring it around with me.

I'm very new to macs though. Last time I used a mac was about 9 years ago in grade 5. They were much different then haha.

Hmm also wanted to ask, what's the keyboard command for taking screen captures again? :p

Hi,

I will soon be the proud owner of a new Powerbook, as soon as FedEx puts it in my grubby little hands. This will be my first Apple since I had a IIe as a kid.

Really lookin' forward to it. Now, if they'd only deliver it. Refreshing the FedEx tracking page over and over will not get the truck here any faster.

Hello Group;

I'm a new member who doesn't have a MAC system. I'm forced to be a PC guru because Autodesk doesn't want to go MAC. I detail complex steel stairs using Autocad. I'm a Bill Gates hater and I can't wait for the day when I can switch over and get one of those awesome all aluminum G5 systems with dual 30" monitors. Way to go MAC for making the fastest, biggest and greatest computer system. Keep up the great work!

Nice to meet you all. This is one heck of a forum.

PS: I'm not sure if you guys will be able to check out my web site properly; since Bill didn't make his MS Publisher software that I used for my web site creation MAC compatiable or Browser friendly. It mostly works well with a PC IE browser. Let me know if you have any luck checking it out.

Happy Holidays!

Look forward to contributing as time permits.

I've been "spanked" and "de-pointed" so many times with posting in MacSupport Discussions, (last one, briefly alluded to 10.3.7 update two days before it came out...that's a "no no"...wham, minus 25 points); So, I thought I'd happily bring my speculatory itch in here, where it seems to be welcomed.

Hello,

Just got my first Mac a week ago. I had been using a PC for past 12 years but had gotten sick of dealing with all the viruses and the horrible Windows OS. But I'm not new to Apple computers. I had a IIGS and a IIC before switching to PC. I wished that I hadn't switched back then, but, everything is better now with my new iMac G5. :)

Hi :)

I've been a Mac user since 2004, when I purchased the G4 iBook, and subsequently the dual-processor PowerMac G5, which is currently my main machine :)

I am a programmer, and despite my young age (15), rather experienced. I code for generic UNIX operating systems (the BSD subsystem in OS X :)), and my feats up to now have been:

- a complete document language with viewers, translators [[Z]]
- a complete programming language [[Psilo]]
- several smaller applications, libraries

I used to code for Windows/i386, and my main application, TuneXP has currently been downloaded about 2 million times :)

Besides programming, creating music (primarily with synthesizers) and graphics are my main hobbies.

I'm a general friendly guy, even though I might be slightly odd at times ;)

Best wishes & hi there ;)
David :)

Hey everybody, awesome site you have here.
I may be a newbie to this site, but I'm a mac vet that has been using macs for about twelve years. That twelve years being all but the first four years of my life.

The single most awesome thing about this site ... you don't have to put up with the naieve PC users that have built up glowing monstrosities of "computers" and call it beatiful or cool or whatever. I love being among my own kind - mac users that know better.

Thanks for creating an awesome site. I hope I can contribute.

Edit: Oh yeah, I'm running a mirror drive door G4, 1.25 GHz, 512 ram, and Panther, with iLife '05 and iWork on the way. :D

Hi everybody

I'm new at this forum. I thought it was a matter of politeness to introduce myself at the members of this forum. But I didn't find a subforum where I could do this...so I'll do it here... :o

First of all, I'm from Belgium, so, if my English is kinda strange, you know why. :D

I've been hanging around here for quite a whil now. I often search the net for cool wallpapers, and its well known that Mac-users have great taste. So I automatically landed here. When I convinced my father to buy me a laptop (we split costs on the excuse that i'll use the laptop when I go to university ;)), I wanted to buy a Mac, but eventually there was a sale in "Aldi" (a cheap store in Europe) with a good laptop for a very reasonable price, so I bought that one.
http://www.multidesk.be/upload/forum/1197/md42200.jpg
It's a great pc, only too bad that WinXP is on it. I really wanted an Apple :(. To compensate for the Win-pc I bought a iPod Mini. Very cool thing, but I'm not too happy with it. The sound is not that well, especially not the low sounds.

Anyway, I have changed my desktop to make it look like a mac, just to give me at least a bit of the wonderful macfeeling you guys experience everyday. Changing your desktop to a mac is kinda wannebe, but what the heck. (I've made sure there's no Apple-icon in the skin, wich makes it less wannebe :p)
Here's a picture of my current desktop (just, with a wallpaper wich is placed on this site)
http://www.vtm.be/autowereld/forum/album_pic.php?pic_id=7781

So I do not have a Mac....yet! I've seen that Apple is making their products more and more competitive (low prices etc.), so I'm sure, that one day -when i've got the money- I will buy one of those shiny white things. :D

Some facts of me: I'm 17 years old (in March 18), I'm a college student in Belgium, I'm a Mac-fan (du-uh), I like running, cars (my nickname is the same as the one I use on a car-forum),...I'll stop here. This is not a weblog.

(If this has to be deleted or replaced because this thread doens't belong here: OK)

[From the moderator: It's now in the proper thread! Welcome!]

I've been lurking around the site for quite a while and finally decided that it was time i joined the mac loving faithful. I have always used macs thanks to my dear mother, unfortunately she has fallen off the band wagon and has been forced by our evil school district to use a dell.

The first mac i can remember having was a macintosh classic, which stayed in use til i cut grass and did other odd jobs to buy my own tangerine imac 333Mhz with 160 mb ram. And that lasted until i graduated from hs and was given an ibook g3 and finally continues with the 1ghz G4 emac i bought for my mom.

I didnt even use a pc until i was a senior in hs. How strange is that.

Hello,

My name is Lisa. I registered about a month ago.
It took me this long to get around to this.

My husband bought me a new laser mouse, & a new zip drive.
I purchased a new laser printer & a 18" flat moniter, too.Yes, I have been a "good girl" for the holidays.
I moved my equipment from one room to another & had to start all over again hooking things up. (what a job!)
I could'nt get help from my hubby because he does'nt know much about computers.
I'm not a beginner any longer;however, I still need some help sometimes, with those "computer problems" that most of us are plagued with.

Later.

EURO 2004 (http://www.euro2004.com/index.html)

Anyways, I have been using macs since System 7.0 Here is a list of my past macs:

Mac IIsi
Powermac 6100/DOS
Powermac 7100/AV
Powermac 7500
Powermac G3 Tower (beige)
Powermac G3 (BW)
Powermac G4 MDD DP
Powermac G4 17" (SOLD :( )

I hope to make some good conversation here at MR.

Just joined today, but I've been scanning the boards for few months. My primary interests are photography, mountain biking, and snowboarding. I've been snowboarding up at Heavenly a few times per week because I have 4 internet college classes (didn't like commuting last semester).

Thanks for operating such a great site-keeps me up to date on all the rumors and product releases. I can't wait for the new iMac, but I have to since I have no money, and my math class requires a PC for MATHXL.

Hi everyone. I was infected last year with the Apple bug which resulted in me buying an iBook G4 1.2Ghz 12" last year for uni and have since then, bought an iPod Mini 4GB (2nd Gen) too! I will probably add a Mac mini to my collection sometime next year and hopefully completely rid myself of Windows PCs!

Anyways, about myself: I'm currently a 3rd year student studying Psychology at Oxford University and I can speak Italian and a little bit of French.

ok, I'll bite too :D

found this site by means of google (what else?) - I was looking for an answer to something about my powerbook; I found a wealth of info here and couldn't help but upgrade the lurker status and join the ranks... so, here we are.

iBlue, my screename, is a simple play on my actual name: Blue (yes, I am serious) and since my name is totally androgynous I'll announce that, yes, ladies and gentlemen... it is a girl. It appears I'm a "minority" in a primarily male forum; however that is probably a good thing, less BS. ;)

Now onto the hardware...
I'm relatively new to mac :o but I feel the conversion is complete; love at first click. I have a 17 inch powerbook G4, and I plan to move from the lap to get a desktop (no firm decisons on what kind yet) sometime soon.

so, composed at almost 2am and nearly spent, there's my intro... it's official.

I just registered at these forums five minutes ago, so am a complete newbie here.

I've been using Macs since 1986 or so, and currently have four Macs running on my wireless network at home, and one Mac in my office at work. The Macs range from my own baby, a dual 2 GHz G5, to my old Bondi Blue Rev A iMac (still plugging away on OS 9.2). My wife uses my old laptop, a PDQ PB. I've been negotiating with her to have her change to OS X and a new laptop, but she likes things that she's familiar with, and the change will not be easy. My son has a fairly new iBook, which he loves to death. But he really wants to move up to a PB because the iBook isn't as capable with video as he wants it to be--he has gotten heavily into FC Express.

Anyway, I have been active in a couple of other forums, been disenchanted by some of the antics in them, and am trying to find a forum home to call my own. I hope this is the place.

Hey, I just joined. I've been lurking since back in December or so, but when I tried to register, it wouldn't let me because of my e-mail address. (Yahoo Mail) I got a GMail account and it let me sign up with that.

My first encounter with an Apple computer was back in grade school (around '91, '92 or so) when I used to play Oregon Trail and other games on one at school.

All of the computers we had at home when I was a kid were DOS, then finally Windows 3.1 and 95. I got my own first computer, a POS Compaq in 2000 and that I had SO much trouble out of that. It was around that time that I spotted a Mac Addict magazine in a bookstore and I was amazed at how different they looked and how much different the OS was.

A couple of months after that, I was in a store (can't remember which one) and they had iMacs and iBooks on display and I looked at them, but my parents were in a hurry, so I didn't get to play around with them or anything.

Well, a few months after that, the Compaq completely died on me. (I'm not sure what exactly happened to it, as I wasn't too good with computers at the time, but I know it wouldn't boot up anymore) This was only about a year after I got it. I think part of the reason was that I was pretty dumb when it came to maintaining computers and viruses probably killed it. (I didn't even have a virus scan on a Windows PC!!)

My friend's uncle had a custom built PC with a 500mhz Celeron, 128mb RAM, 32mb Rage 128 Pro video card that he sold me for only $200, which I thought was a great deal at the time. He just put my CDRW drive and 30gb HD from the Compaq in that computer.

Well, I used that for a couple more years and then in December, '03 it was time to buy a new computer. I wanted to buy a iMac G4, 'cause I thought they were they coolest computers I'd ever seen, but for some reason, I let my friend talk me into just getting this guy he knew to build me one. It was an AMD Athlon XP 2100+ @ 1.73ghz, 1gb RAM, 120gb HD, Lite-On 16x DVD ROM, Samsung 52x32x52 CDRW drive, 128mb ATI 9800 SE graphics card, and a 15" Toshiba LCD display. I had a lot of problems out of it and in the year I had it, I'd say I formatted it at least 7-8 times, which is totally un-called for.

This brings us to December, '04. Since I was fed up with using Windows, I sold that computer to one of my friends and bought me a refurbished eMac G4. 1.25ghz, 512mb RAM, 160gb HD, Superdrive. What's crazy is, when I ordered it, it said it only had 256mb RAM and an 80gb HD, so I got a GREAT deal on it. It was only $846 w/ tax.

I'm totally hooked now. I'll never go back to Windows. Mac OS X is FAR superior. So far, this is the best computer I've ever owned.

Just recently, I also picked up a 4gb iPod Mini in Green, and now I'm totally amazed by it, as well. :)

Anyway, sorry for writing a novel, but I just figured I'd tell my story on how I became a Mac user.

New to the forum, but not to Mac... I've been a diehard since 6th grade or so, when my dad got a 128K Mac. In college, I had a Color Classic (LOL - I thought my upstairs neighbor in the dorm was cool, bc he could aford a Quadra! ah, 1993...)

I guess my 15" G$ PowerBook means I've come up in the world :D; still running Jaguar, but that's supposed to change tomorrow by 4:30pm!

Hi. I'm new here. Been here a couple of weeks, haven't posted in thsi thread to introduce myself.

Dispite my name, I'm actually a white male. I smoke more than a circus-monkey, I love technology, video games, art, music, romance, drama, and kung-fu. My nickname actually comes from an Anime series named Great Teacher Onizuka, as I look just like him. Strange, I know, but that's what I get for having geeky friends.

I have a modded XBox (funny enough, that I didn't purchase, so no, I haven't bought a product from MicroShaft), a Powermac G4, a 2nd Gen iPod, and am down to hang out at coffee shops, bars, out and about in the city, and meet new people.

Aggressive and cold at fir meeting (they say its a defense mechanism from child-hood) and a puppy once known. I'm a realist, not religious, as I have faith in God but not religion.

Hmm. What else? Well, I like helping the newcomers (don't like using the term "noob" unless you start crap) and will go to great lengths to do so.

Hope to get to know you all, and have a good time.

Hey. I am new to the MacRumors community. I have been lurking the forums daily for over 2 years. (Long time, wouldn't ya say?) Anyway, MacRumors helped me decide when to buy my 12" PowerBook in 2003. I hope to become an active and helpful member to this great community. I have been to only a few forums in my internet life, mainly becuase the majority of forums have too many leet speaking kiddie hackers that annoy me really badly. But from the two years I've been a daily lurker, I can tell that there's hardly any of that nonsense here.

I hope to buy a PowerMac or iMac in the next few months, I hope you guys (and gals) can help me decide. I have not completely switched, but only because of money issues. (It's kinda hard to get a lot in a short time)

My real name is Kyle, but you can call me evilinsanity or Kyle or anything you'd like. I do skip to different things in my writing as you can probably tell, but I hope I don't confuse you too terribly. Oh yeah, I can spell entirely great sometimes.

So, for like the last year or so I have been looking into getting a mac, but must say that they are quite pricey, and as a student, that is always an issue. Well, recently I "took the dive", and after getting some financial aid from school ended up purchasing a used 14.1in ibook 700mhz g3... Not the best, but closer to my price range. Last year i bought an iPod (the 40gb photo), and I would probably say that really pushed me along the way to the mac even more. My son's mom has an eMac, and up untill we split I would be on that way more then my own dell.

As it stands, I only use my dell for some stupid online math course that ONLY runs on windows and IE!!! Other then that, I take my ibook with me everywhere, and love it to death. I have a digital camera (last years financial aid), and having the ability to fill up my 1Gb CF card and then transfer to the ibook has been so nice.

I would like to say that I have had no problems with the ibook since getting it, but I recently went to yosemite (the real reason I took the dive), and on the first night there, I ended up crasshing the system so bad that it wouldn't boot... A broken computer folder showed up instead. Very sad as I left all my install disks at home. Then like two weeks later, the logic board went out. Apple covered the replacement, which I am sure that most other companies would not even consider with a nearly 3 year old computer.

Everything now is running fine, I have 10.3.9 and am considering tiger when some more money comes in. I am really looking forward to learning the os and all of it's features. Right now, I am looking strongly at getting a powermac when funds become avalible.

Any way, i would like to welcome myself to the forums and the mac experince and thank everyone here who has supported my small problems and hope to be around for a long time.

Paul

I've been reading MacRumors for several years; finally decided to join.

I've been a Mac user for a few years. My first Mac was a sawtooth G4 - great machine with OS9. Unfortunately, it was not possible to install any version of OSX or Linux (kernel panics left and right), so I donated it to a museum that still runs OS9.

Currently I'm using a 1GHz Ti Powerbook running 10.3.9; absolutely love the thing. I'm out of disc space with music, photos, and now EyeTV recordings, so I ordered a dual 2.7GHz last week. I'll be heading over to the "current ship times" thread to complain . . . .

This will be a bit of a test... Another of these threads started with good intentions... but was soon taken over by regulars.

if you just joined MacRumors, reply and introduce yourself.

This is only for new Macrumors users... only users who registered within two months of the current date may reply...

All other users posts will be deleted. (moderators, please enforce this). This will be for myself included... only comments by truely "new" users will be allowed in this thread.

Discuss away...

Good evening. As my login suggests, I am retired. I have been a MAC user for some time. Now that I am retired, I am exploring the opportunities with the software. Can anyone recommend the best classical radio station that will work with Mac?

Hi all!

Like many, I've been lurking for a couple of months, and have been trying to register here for a while, but the site didn't like my hotmail address... But fr some reason, registration with the same address worked fine on a PC...

I was introduced to Macs at Uni while on a 10 week digital animation course (If I think about it, my first Mac encounter was when I managed the school savings club when I was 7 lol). We had a room full of eMacs to play with, and got to work.... I had bought a PC for £519 before I came to Uni to help with typing, projects etc, but this had become diseased and riddled with viruses due to the lack of protection on my building's network. The 'net always ran slowly on the PC, until one day, about 3 weeks into the term, it stopped working altogether...

I was getting more and more interested in Macs since I loved the ease of producing media on them, plus the sheer novelty of making some photoshop images, and within a couple of hours having an animation (using FCP) as a DVD with an interactive menu and designed cover. I was gagging for a 17" PowerBook (as I suppose many new switchers do ;) ) , so when I saw a poster in Uni for a 700mhz eMac, I thought "I'll get an Apple to see how it goes..." and I had to have it! It cost £200, and is the best computer I've ever owned :). I was sceptical about plugging the network cable into it since it took me over 30mins to alter settings on my PC in order to make it work, however one night I wanted to read MacRumors (the night 1.67mhz PB's were announced) so I gave it a shot... In went the cable, and up came the homepage! NO settings to change whatsoever! I was up until some crazy hour, constantly refreshing pages as more and more news came in about them, and I've been hooked ever since! :D

Oh and btw- my name... I ride mountain bike trials (see videos on www.trials-forum.com - these should explain), and the key move is when you press down on the pedal, balance the bike on the back wheel, then kick and jump, going forwards to land on the rear wheel. This is called a "Lunge", and the name is meant to be 'someone who lunges'. I thought "Lunger" looked a bit weird, so I changed it to "Lunja" and here I am today! (eagerly awaiting Steve Jobs' WWDC Keynote... lol)

Unfortunately, I'm still a PC user, and since I saw an iMac in the UK a while ago Iv been dying to switch. Howdy folks! I'm the gnome from Richmond, virginia. I'm employed as a brewer at legend brewing company here in town.
I hopped on your sight to see what the Mac Community was saying about our little fiasco we're having with the $50 Ibooks and regestered to interject some thoughts on the matter. When I'm not brewing or ..drinking copious amounts of Frosty cold Barley Pop. I'm usually fiddling around with antique and obsolete computers and gaming consoles.. you'll find me as a regualr forum user at atariage.com. most of my computers are scavanged together from donated, auctioned, and well..trash picked parts and enjoy the challange of breathing life back into things.. I'm a notorious tinkerer. and apperntly ghetto tech support
that being said..none of my macs are my primary computer I'm afraid to say..not for lack of trying mind you.. I would love one.. just..y'know..pricey and what not for me right now.
but I will say the pride of my collection is a fully operational M001, now all I need to do is figure out how to get more use out of it

Hey everyone I'm Al, and i'm a student from the UK. I have a PC at the moment, but have been wanting to get a mac for quite a few years now, but I made my mind up when I visited the new apple store in the bullring birmingham later in the year. In the last few months I have been reading some of the posts here, and decided to join. I am hoping to get a mac sometime after the Paris expo..for which I have just got tickets for :D At the moment I own an iPod & an iPod shuffle.

This is a really great site, and I hope it will be a great resource when I finally make the switch (can't wait!).

Hi,

I'm will. In a few days, the plunge will be taken and an iBooK '14 will be with me, along with a 6 GB ipod .
College is beginning in a couple weeks, so I decided to get acclimated with the new laptop before I go off to school [kalamazoo college, btw].
I'm moderately experienced with windows and linux, running xp and ubuntu on my desktop @ home. My primary OS is linux and have been using it for about 2 years [mandrake for a while, and now ubuntu for the past 6 months - may move on to debian or gentoo in a bit]. With the iBook, I hope to dual-boot with osX and ubuntu to get the best of both worlds..:)

Previously, my experiences with apple have been limited to Apple II's [!!!!] in grade school - playing number munchers and all sorts of good old MECC games :D ; and in my last couple years there, they upgraded to emacs.
Since then, I've used OS X in a very limited manner in high school [only the gfx lab had macs] and want to experiment a bit more with them, but I don't know anyone with them and I figure the best way to learn more about them is to use them myself.

In the past couple months, I've lurked around here and a couple other Mac sites, as well as visit the apple store near me [20 minute drive].

Eager to discover more about the world of the iBook and Mac osX !

I'll peruse around the forums and the net a bit more about these machine, but if someone could direct me to a good tutorial/resource center in addition to the macrumors site, that would be appreciated.
[I]edit: I just noticed the guide a few posts up - silly me didn't notice that!

Regards,
keyshawn.

PS - I plan on probably selling my ipod [to be honest, my friend has one, and I've used it, and don't like the interface much, as well as the 6 GB is a bit small for me.] Does OSX play well with other MP3 devices as well ? A creative Zen or iriver are alternatives that I'm looking at right now.

*Off to find out how to transfer files from Linux to OS X*

Hi! I'm Matt and I'm happy to be an official member of the MacRumors Family. :) I'm a teenage writer/actor/amateur filmmaker/editor who has been browsing these forums for quite some time. I received my first mac (a Power Macintosh 6500/275)for Christmas in 1996 at the ripe old age of 6 and never turned back. Since then, I've touched a PC less than 10 times...Talk about a Switch Campaign. In 2001 I bought my first computer, an iBook G3 600Mhz which I recently gave to my mom. In return for giving up my iBook and not asking for gifts from my parents for a while, my parents took me to the Apple Store on my 15th birthday and let me come home with one of my most prized material possessions...a 15" PowerBook G4 Rev. D Superdrive...and so I lived happily ever after...Once again, I am very excited to finally be a member on MacRumors and can't wait to respond to the other members whose comments I've been reading for such a long time!

Hey, I'm Jay. I've been lurking for around 6 months, and finally decided to join. I used my first Mac in 1988, when I was five. My dad's a graphic designer, and decided to start bringing his work home with him, so my first real exposure to the Mac was a IIcx. We upgraded it throughout the years, and I think by the time it croaked (bad power supply), it was running 7.5, and had a 160MB drive in it, along with an Apple CD-ROM drive (remember SCSI, anyone? ;) ). By that time, I was using a Dell for most of my schoolwork, as my school wasn't very Mac friendly, minus one of the teachers who had a lab full of LCII's (God bless her). I had various jobs throughout the years, which pretty much forced me to use a PC. I decided to make the switch back, upon getting involved in video production my junior year of high school. We were using Premiere in the classroom with an old heap o' junk Pentium II, and it was nothing short of a PITA. One of my friends, who worked for the city's media production division showed me his Powerbook running FCP, and I just couldn't believe how smoothly it ran, with no error messages or anything. Unfortunately, when I started college, I was given an HP laptop, which proved to be nothing but a headache, day in, day out. I think I went through 3 replacements in a 3 month period due to various components failing. I finally decided to make the final switch to Mac the next year. I was working as a TA in the graphic design lab on campus, and therefore using exclusively Macintosh while at work. I remember staying really late some evenings (till around 1 am or so) after the building closed, just so I could keep exploring and using the Mac. I decided then, at that point, that it was time to look into purchasing my own Mac. I went online to the Apple store, and configured an eMac, and had it ready to ship out and everything. I started thinking about it, finance wise, and actually ended up cancelling the order. However, 2 weeks later, my girlfriend and I went up to CompUSA (no Apple store nearby) to snag one of the G3 iBooks that had just gone on clearance, and I ended up impulse buying one of the eMacs they had there. Best impulse buy I've ever made. I've enjoyed using my Mac far more than I've used a PC, because it just works. The only thing I've ever had go wrong on my Mac was a logic board failure, and luckily, since I was at home visitng my parents, there was Apple store on the other side of town, and they fixed it within 3 days. That's better than I can say for my laptop. I've made a switcher out of my girlfriend, and I'm still working on switching my parents back ("The Mac doesn't do what we need a computer to do").

This seems a bit silly since I've been hanging around reading, smirking, harumphing, grimacing, and occasionally staring blankly at threads for about a year now. Anyway, I joined up officially a couple months ago and have enjoyed spouting off and getting cheeky ever since. I was raised on apples starting with the IIe and progressing through the SE's I used in gradeschool, the performa 545 as our first family computer, the iMac DV edition I mooched off my girlfriend, a 400MHz G4 powermac I pretty much gave away earlier this year, to the 1.25GHz G4 dualie my wife owns now (not the aforementioned gf, this one I had to ween off PC's). I still have an Apple II along with Mario Brothers and Moon Patrol on 5.25's, though :D I hope to have many interesting conversations with all of you. Well, maybe not all x-thousand of you, but the majority.

Cheers

Well, after months of reading through the huge 16 page threads about the news items... I thought I might try to break in over here.

A bit about me: I enjoy doing graphic design as a hobby (and nothing more, I'm not good enough to make money off of it), I am a huge mac fanatic (like everyone else who tries one without prejudice), I own an ibook and an ipod mini (yeah so I'm not that crazed, but I'm also short on cash), I'm a Junior in high school, etc.

So anyways, what goes on around here?

I lurked for a long time in the forums, a couple years anyway, 'cause I hate registering for stuff. But I finally joined up a few weeks ago so I could post during the lead-up to Paris. I became another voice in the unholy chorus of PowerBook whiners--the lifeblood of MacRumors. Are they coming this Tuesday? How about next Tuesday? Are they coming at Paris? No! Damn Apple! etc. etc. From there I got progressively more involved and enjoyed reading other stuff going on. Still waiting on that PowerBook update though...

I just came across this thread and thought I'd introduce myself as well.

I am a fairly recent college graduate and I'm currently working as a network administrator for a company in Texas. I switched to the Mac (at home) just over a year ago, when I was blessed with the gift of a PowerMac G5. I love it and have learned a lot about it and OS X since then. The fact that I am familiar with Macs actually helped land me the job I have now.

I've been a frequent contributor/member of only one tech other forum, but I've enjoyed this one very much in the short time I've been coming here. I hope to contribute and help out as much as possible. Thanks for all of the great info and enjoyable reading I've come across so far! :D

Hi there everyone!

I'm new to the forums...I've posted a little in some of the other threads, asking mac questions and what not...
I bought my first mac (IBook) back in July (RIGHT before they updated the new Ibooks-that was a bummer, but I got a refund) and so far, I absolutely love the thing! It was difficult at first, switching to a mac, but after I got used to it, and learned how to use it properly (which I'm still learning), I discovered that macs really are very simple to use and fun too.
I consider this computer a damn good investment on my part and I don't think I'll ever regret it. It does everything I need it too, and it's not too fancy or too powerful, so I definitely don't think I'm wasting it...
I also REALLY love this forum. The people are generally friendly and VERY helpful, which is nice, because I'm still learning and so I sometimes ask questions that I know are stupid, but everyone is polite and patient when they respond.
I'm glad I stumbled upon this place.
Send a message to say "hi" if you feel like it!
:) :) :)

Hey everyone. My name's Monica and I'm from Orlando, FL (within Hurricane Wilma's projected path, yikes!). I've been a mac user for about 5 years. I started with an iMac, then a Powerbook, and just recently an iBook. I've been reading the site for awhile but was a bit hesitant to type any messages of my own until I understood the dynamic of macrumors a little more and also learned a bit more about Macs.

I'd never posted to any forum ever before macrumors! I'm still learning and got a little help from a few nice members on here.

I'm kinda learning as I go. I was going to start a thread called "Crash Course for Newbies" but now I've come across this thread so it seems that the mods had already thought of that! :)

Here's what I know so far and maybe it will help at least one newbie out there.

First of all, click on the FAQ in the top lefthand corner. It will answer a lot of questions and save you from having to embarass yourself by asking others silly questions.

Secondly, this site uses vB code. If you're at all familiar with HTML then it'll be pretty easy to use. Here's a list of codes which shows you how to italicize, make urls clickable, link to threads, etc. vB Codes (http://forums.macrumors.com/misc.php?do=bbcode). It's kinda fun to look through the list and learn something new.

Thirdly, you can't get an avatar (those neat photos under the names) until you've posted 500 times. You begin as a mac newbie, then a mac member and then a mac regular. After that it seems to go through a series of numbers ending with Demi-God/Goddess.

Fourthly, if you don't stay on topic you (or at least your thread anyway) get sent to the Wasteland (basically, you get axed). It's also great to read through some of the Wasteland threads, especially when some members have fun with the obviously Wasteland-doomed topic.

Fifthly (is that a word?), you should never make posts as lengthy as the one I'm writing now because no one will read it. Hehe. If you've gotten this far, then that's just cool.

I still don't know all that much, but that's what i do know! Good luck everyone! ;)

Hi everyone! I've been using a mac for 2 years now. Back then my boyfriend and I decided we would get 2 computers. One desktop and one laptop for vacations, etc. Surprisingly, the only 2 companies we could obtain decent financing for were HP and Apple. He bought his HP desptop and by default I got the Apple. At that point I had no idea about how different the apples are from the pcs. I didnt even know they had a different OS!! When I received my iBook G3 14" I was instantly blown away. Up to that point I had only dealt with pcs. I had come to the conclusion that computing was just a pain in the neck. Until the first time I turned on my iBook. Being an average computer user, I couldn't believe how easy it was to set up and run. I've never had any problems with the OS and everything is just so simple. I still have a lot to learn and am really glad to have joined this forum. Since doing so I've already learned quite a bit, and laughed quite a bit as well :p

Hi,

I am typing this from my Win 98 PC :( at home but I run a eMac computer lab at an elementary school complete with a G4 server running OS 10.3.8 server software. Prior to last March, the lab had 10 year old PowerMac 5260's and 5+ year old iMacs. I have used Apple computers for 20 plus years - make that 25 years at various jobs. I found that Mac users have always LOVED their Macs for good reasons. But, most of my use involves guessing at how to do things or fix problems at school. Luckily, the Mac software has always been very user friendly and the computers keep on humming along. But, MacRumors will be a great addition to my "I need help" resources.:D

Hi, i'm a recent mac-switcher.

This summer I got an ibook 12" 1.33 GHz right when they were released, and have been learning osX ever since. I've read these forums for a few months but just joined recently.

I know I haven't had the ibook for very long, but I just bought a used powerbook 1.33 GHz 15" that should be arriving early next week! I decided I wanted more mac :)

Glad to join and hopefully contribute here.

Thanks!

Hi,

maestro55 (Steve) here, I am a 17 year old geek from Texas. I recently joined the forums here, mainly for the photo gallery to drool over everyones set-ups. In the photo gallery forum I have told a little about myself, but lets begin here with my first Apple computer. Well, it wasn't *MY* computer, but my dad had set-up an Apple IIgs and I remember it having two games that we used to play. One was a spelling game, and the other I can't remember. Anyhow, I was just a little boy then, I mean like 4 or 5 years old, and I don't recall very much, but I have been around computers since as long as I can remember. My first Macintosh was a Mac LC3, I still remember when I got my first CD-ROM drive (external of course). By the time I was nine I was pretty good at using Mac OS (when I was 9, I think it was 7.1) I even had a Powerbook Duo Dock for a brief time. The machine I had using 7.1 was a Centris something, I don't remember the model, but I sold it to a friend who traded it for a PC (this was at a garage sell several years back.. we had gotten an old Windows 95 machine that I shared with my other siblings. My dad had his own computers and my stepmom had her machine. I think it was a dumb thing, but I didn't use the Centris very much since I had the PC to use and so I sold it. A Macintosh Classic went with it. These machines came from my dad, who works in education and so I have always been around Macs. There is a picture of me in my room at around 10 years old, I had my little office; duo dock, centris, and classic :) I regret not having those today. ) We got an emachines with Windows 98 on it after that, and I still didn't have any macs. Then 3 and half years ago I got my own room, I had a job and so I bought the componets to build a computer. It ran windows for about a year, but then a made a switch to linux. I ended up with the old emachines (now running Linux). My dad hooked me up with a windows laptop that I have for my windows machine. I have two macs running OS 9.1 (both identical PowerMac 5500 series all-in-ones. These came from surplus since the schools around here switched to imacs a few years back) So I am pretty diverse in my computing.

So.. in 1999, I was 10 years old, my dad bought a Powerbook G3 (wallstreet? sounds about right.) and I fell in love with it. I wanted a Powerbook G3 until they came out with the Powerbook G4. 2006 I plan on making my dream come true. I plan on purchasing a 12inch Powerbook G4. I hope that till then and after that point I will be able to make friends here on this site and get to learn a lot of things that I have yet to know about Mac OS. I took a certification test free online while this website was giving a free trial. I failed the Mac OS X certification test. I have a lot to learn.

A bit more background information on what I want to do after highschool and my computing experience. I want to go into networking, and I plan on attending Texas State Technical College in Fall 2006. Most of those guys are PC guys, but I will be sporting my 12inch Powerbook. Though I am going into networking I find that because macs have a terminal and also are based on Unix (being able to run Linux apps native, I do believe so?) I will be able to do everything I need on a Powerbook. I have A LOT to learn about computers, I would consider myself a novice still in many ways. I would be on an Intermediate level in other ways.. I get around in a Text Editor all right, I am learning Java, but I couldn't tell you how to set up the mutt mail client.

..oops.. I get carried away. It is now close to 3AM and my bed seems to be calling my name.

For some reason when I first actually registered at MacRumors after reading posts for a few days, I never got around to introducing myself in this thread! Now here it is a couple months later....

I made the big switch from PC to Mac back in mid-October and my first Mac was the 20" iMac (rev B). Shortly thereafter they announced the new revisions of the PBs and I decided that since I loved my iMac so much I wanted to be mobile, too, with a Tiger inside (rather than Windoze like my old laptop), so I got me a 15" PB BTO with the faster hard drive and maxed-out RAM. I love both of my machines and have been enjoying spending lots of time on both of them every day!

New guy here. FrankBlack's the name. Okay, Okay. So it's the name of my favorite fictional TV character. :o

Age: Older then the average demographic for on-line forums. Put it this way: I remember weekly air raid horn tests, and doing "duck and cover" in first grade.

I use Macs on the job, as well as at home. However, I am also compelled to use windows on the job as well. But, I have learned to turn this into an advantage: Knowing how to use both, I tell people I prefer the Mac platform all the way. Most windows only folks just shake their heads, but on one occasion, I thought the head on this particular windows-only guy was going to explode.

That would have been messy.

This forum came well-recommended. So far, it looks like a fine, well-managed forum.

Hello everyone, I'm pretty new here. I have a few posts under my belt, but I figure I'll do things right by introducting myself here. I've been a Mac user for almost 3 years now, and I've never had any problems.

One thing I don't understand is the sudden interest in Apple from PC users because of the Intel chip. When I switched over, it had nothing to do with the processor, but everything to do with the software. I see all these people claiming to have ordered the Macbook Pro as soon as they could. What's wrong with your Motorola chips? My G4 works just fine. It's the software that's kept me using a Mac. Just thought I'd share that.

I look forward to getting to know you guys soon. Thanks for having me.

I think that most of the excitement about the switch to Intel processors has to do with the anticipated performance benefit. There's a long-running joke here about people speculating when (if) we'd ever see a G5-based PowerBook from Apple, because Apple's notebooks were lagging behind the competition more and more.

Welcome to MacRumors, and War Eagle! I think that most of the excitement about the switch to Intel processors has to do with the anticipated performance benefit. There's a long-running joke here about people speculating when (if) we'd ever see a G5-based PowerBook from Apple, because Apple's notebooks were lagging behind the competition more and more.

War Eagle, friend. I'm a Junior in History.

I understand the anticipated benefits and the need of having the latest technology. But me, I plan on using my iBook for a couple of more years. It's only a year old.

New member on the forums. I don't own a Mac but use one occasionally here in the office. I've been considering getting a Mac Laptop for some time now. Mostly because it comes with LAMP already installed and I figured for web development, if it works on a Mac, it's likely to work everywhere. I've become disenfranchchised with crap products coming out of the halls of Microsoft. I mean, I do have a PC, but my affinity towards Gates started downhill with my using of Firefox.

Anyway, good to be here. I tried joining the MacInsider forums, but it's been 24 hours since I registered and I'm still in a moderating queue. I think that's ridiculous, and this site seems to be more active and more of what I'm looking for. Kudos for Google...

Question. Why is my avatar that I've listed for my url not show up in me posts, but it shows up in me profile?

You must have at least 500 posts to use an avatar.

BTW, welcome to MacRumors!

No worries, you're new here, we understand. ;) :) But if you ask a question like that again, the response will be something more along the lines of this:

I actually expected a profanity laced reply in that case. While cutting it may be, at least it could become entertaining....

I never said hello when I joined here LOL. I've been here a couple months. Better late than never I guess to say hello.

Hello, my name is Erik, I'm 15, and I live in the most boring state ever, Connecticut (although we do have 2 apple stores which is cool). I am in 9th grade and I am taking all honors courses (no AP available yet). I play lacrosse and premier soccer. Noncompetitvely, I do swimming and skiing. I have a PowerBook, iBook, and a Dell.

For everyone that is just joining, it is a nice little community. You'll enjoy it.

I have to admit with very little reluctance, I can't wait to kiss my pc goodbye!
My first Apple is gonna be a MacBook Pro. I need a serious laptop for my future courses of my junior and senior year in college. Recording Industry Management
demands Macs in school and the workplace. Of course, Pro-Tools is still the industry standard, but Logic Pro and Final Cut Studio are so much cooler! I am looking forward to the "Universal" art and music software to be released.

Hello fellow MR members, I'm sure this thread has seen a lot of newbies, most of them probably never came back, honestly I'm not sure if I'll be too active in this community. I just bought an iBook G4, my first Mac computer ever. Although I was able to format/re-install it without any problems as I have common computer sense, I'm sure I'll run into issues where I'll need a hand.

I searched for "Mac Forums" on google and found you guys. I can tell this community has a lot of nice people because I have some experience in running forums and helping others. I run MSFORUMS.ORG, which helps Microsoft based product users. But that's all just a hobby for me.

I have to say that I am loving my iBook. Mac Office, Photoshop CS, Toast Titanium, Chicken of VNC, oneButton FTP, Skype, MSN Messenger and yahoo messenger are some of the programs that I have already used on the mac and had no problems. I do regret the fact that I can't do voice on MSN or yahoo cross-platform, but Skype fixed that for me.

I'll post in the "what's your job" thread further about myself and what I do and why I need my iBook but for now, this is genesis for ya...

So, I registered pretty much exactly 2 months ago, and only now saw this thread... I think I can sneak in just ahead of the deadline :)

Live in Los Angeles, CA, not far away from 2 Apple stores (The Grove and The Beverly Center). Film industry (what did you expect, it's LA!). My ibook (see sig) arrived Dec 22 and I've been mainlining Apple products ever since... you should see my cc bills :D

Honestly, don't know how long I'll participate in the threads... I'm between assignments right now, so I've got a bit of free time until the end of Feb... after that, I may not have the time to post much.

However, I love macrumors. I've looked at other boards (I won't mention names, ahem) and this is by far the friendliest, most diverse and interesting one I've seen yet. I love it here :) :) :) !!!
