This will be a bit of a test... Another of these threads started with good intentions... but was soon taken over by regulars.

if you just joined MacRumors, reply and introduce yourself.

This is only for new Macrumors users... only users who registered within two months of the current date may reply...

All other users posts will be deleted. (moderators, please enforce this). This will be for myself included... only comments by truely "new" users will be allowed in this thread.

Discuss away...

(this could fail miserably if no one replies :) )

I'm a newbie but have been observing for the past week or two...wanting to get a glimpse of what might be coming out at mac world. I"m going into my first year in college and was looking at macs b/c of my friend who has been a die-hard mac-user since he was born.

Anyway, the flat-panel imac always appealed to me and i just oredered the new 17" one the day it came out. And now that i'm about to be a mac-user i thought i owed it to myself to register here.

Well I've been a lurker for a while now but had to register in order to lurk!!! :o So I might as well post something! Well, let's see I've been a mac user since '92 with a Performa 430!! Wonderful machine but was outdated fast. I have a P.C. now and have recently been interested in Mac again! OS X did it for me as soon as I layed eyes on it at CompUsa!

But I'm waiting for a Mac, IMac or IBook to be worth the cost so I can dive right back in to the apple pool! Cuz the pentium notebooks give more bang for the buck at this point than apple!

But I waited three months for MWNY to see what was coming out and was sold with the new Ipods! 5-7 weeks for the p.c. version  Oh Well. I'll wait patiently!

Hi,
Well I've been around here for a while(about 5 months), but never saw the need to post so I was always a guest. But now since macworld I needed to be a member to read the threads and well, here I am!:D You will probably see a lot more of me in the future...;)

So...I guess I'm a "new" mac user too. Had my iBook for about a year, but am just getting into all these "mac-obsessed" ;) sorts of sites now . I have lurked around for a couple weeks too, but now with the "high-traffic" during MXNY I decided to register, anyway, hello.

I think I need to clear up that I am not a "new" mac user. I've used macs all my life. I'm just new to macrumors.

Hi there. Yeah, as you've heard before, the whole addiction to rumours during MWNY forced me to register, too. I've been a PeeCee user from way back (good ol' DOS), and got my first PowerMac last year, and then got shafted when they introduced the Quicksilvers about four weeks later. So, needing a PowerBook, I was bound and determined not to get shafted again. So, diligently following the releases and rumours, I think I was probably the only person hoping that the PB's WOULDN'T get reved. So, here I sit with my PB 667 and AirPort, lovin' it. Oh, yeah the iPod is awesome. Picked it up the first day they were out and never looked back.
So, that's my story, and I'm still stuck using Peecees at work, which sucks. Yes, I'm addicted...:D

Hi,
I guess to start off, I will say hello to everyone. I do not quite own a mac yet, i am going to be purchasing a new ibook before i start university again this fall. I've used macs before and i want one because to put it simply: they work. I'm tired of wondering if i will be able to finish a report only to have the windoze crash and leave me stuck. Also i love the great features of Mac OS and how apple seems to respect privacy better than microshaft. So yeah, i am a mac user stuck inside a pc user's body! Screaming to be released, trying to figure out what goodies to get with my ibook next month. BTW this forum is great, lots of good debate and info.
I'll be stickin' around for a while i think.

Been around a while myself but only posted recently. These pages seem a little intimidating to say the least. If you are not sure what you are talking about, you are sure to get flamed. Anyway, I love Macrumors and have had it bookmarked for some time now. The news seems to be as up to date as any. I have been a Mac user since the early 90's and am on my fifth Mac. I still have them all and they all work great. My kids use them for basic education games and I still love to mess around the old System 7. Thanks for this welcome page. I'm sure to be posting more in the regular boards.

I've been around this site for a while now (year abouts) observing the boards at times and finally gave into posting in the favorite song thread. Probably won't post too much unless I'm bored at work, but oh well.

Hello from the continental divide near Rollinsville CO. The first computer I ever touched was an Ohio Scientific kit. Then i was an IBM 370 main frame operator. It had a drum drive, card reader and a whopping 128 byte magnetic core memory. My first computer was a Timex Sinclar if you can call that a computer. My first Apple was an Apple][e, then a Mac 512E, then a Duo 230 system. Currently I have a G4 450, a iMacDV and a iBook Dual USB 500 overclocked to 600/100. I've been gawking at MacRumors for quite some time but had to register during MWNY. Never seem to have anything to post but lo love to read...

Well, like so many others here- I recently joined on to watch for the new PMacs... originally hoping for MWNY- then Aug 5th... and now Aug 13th (Hope hope!)
At least now it finally seems they'll be out... only who knows what they'll be.

Either way- when they're announced/released, I'll be on line getting one. For some reason my PMac 7500 just isn't cutting it anymore. :p

Sure, she's been updated a few times- first to a blazing fast 604/120... and most recently to a G3/220 that's overclocked to 300.
I've been in dire need of just plopping down and getting a new machine for a while- OSX alone would make it worth it... but with the most recent updates to iTunes- not being able to run an MP3 player.... well- the time has come to get a new.

Question is- after 7 years... now what do I do with her? Anyone?

Hoping to see some new, major releases- and now that I'm registered here I know I'll be around often.

Sean.

Hi everyone -

I've looked through these forums I don't know how many times, but this is the first time i've posted. I just received my first mac, a g3 400 that i got on eBay. (Well, it's actually my 2nd. I had a g4 cube that i bought as an open box buy, then it turned out they were actually holding it for a friend of mine.) I don't have OS X on here yet, just 9.2.2, but i can't wait to put Jag on there. I know it isn't the fastest thing out there, but it should satisfy my mac craving, then when i graduate, i can make the full "switch".

I am a refugee. I've been serving as a moderator on a very active message board for a high-profile musical instrument manufacturer for a couple of years and it came time to hang it up over there. Now I'm refocusing my energies on running my recording studio and discovered this board just a few weeks ago as I was researching my new Mac purchase.

I've been running my Cubase studio on my beige G3/300 for a few years now and it's time to upgrade. Going with the new 17" iMac and a MOTU 828 interface. Very excited about this and can't wait for everything to arrive.

I've been a Mac fan since I bought a used 512ke back in 1993 in college for $100. Lived with an LCIII for a couple of years until I got the G3, and now the iMac is the next step in my evolution.

Musically, I've been writing for local TV programs and commercials, along with creating some ambient/electronic works in my free time. Now I've aligned myself with a wonderful vocalist and have entered the pop-music realm.

I'm very much a mac-user and not a mac-tweaker, so I doubt I'll have much to contribute here, but I'll be lurking faithfully. It's nice to be on the other side of the "moderator" job for a change. :^)

I too was/am a lurker...

I registered only because it was required to view the forums before MacWorld. After registering, I thought "why not?" and posted a few times.

I have an iBook 500, but someday I will get a Powerbook G4 (the iBook is wayyyy too slow).

I've been reading the forums for a few weeks and have been a member since MWNY. I used to run a corporate PC support hotline and I was impressed by the freedom and creativity the Mac gave its users compared with the drudgery imposed by DOS and Windows.

I'm an independent video producer now. Released a Windsurf racing video last year - edited with FCP on my old Beige G3. When FCP finally choked I upgraded to two G4 733s.

I couldn't care less about whether the new Macs are slower than the latest Dell or whatever. My 2 PowerMacs run all my business and production software perfectly and I'm having fun.

while i actually registered in January, i didnt activate and post until a few days ago. I live about 20 minutes outside Boston, and will be starting college in a month, in the company of a brand new dual gig w/ nvidia ti 128 card. I have been a reader of this site for about a year, and look forward to contributing some tidbits of knowledge, both relevant and wildly inacurate. As of this post my computer will ship in a few days, but until then i will be using the 733 quicksilver that my brother will be egressing to college with. A warning though, my posts will, in all likelihood, be rife with Hitchhiker quotes.

well yeah, i've been registered since March this year. i think the reason i found MacRumors was because i was starting college this year and had to get a Mac. i guess i was just looking around the net for reviews and stuff and came across MacRumors. then i noticed about the rumors of new TiBooks...
lucky i came across this site or i would have ended up with a Rev. B TiBook, but i saw about the new TiBooks that were to be released so i waited. now i've got a Rev C 667, all thanks to MacRumors!!:D and this place is also great for all kinds of tech help and VPC hacks...:D :D
edit> whoops, look like i got a bit to eager... got confused. Mar/May, to similar. sorry. and to make things worse i can't delete my post... help!

Alright, I'm no longer a newbie...but I'm a newbie to the communty discussion boards...does that count?

Ok, I joined end of July, making some stupid comment. I've added more quality input since then. I'm a PC user, with crappy PCs (200 MHz desktop, 550 MHz laptop), but am planning on buying an exceptional notebook that can be a desktop replacement...enter the tibook

I had an apple user friend, he touted mac os X...with the unix core. I then saw previews of Jag, and I got really interested.

I'm a third-year undergrad at the U of M...planning on applying to either med or grad school...whomever accepts me

Well, I gots to sleep for my MCATs tomorrow, for those going to med school, ya'll know what it is.

Been here since MWNY. I only registered so I could read the forums, but I've since posted a few times. I guess you could say I'm a newbie, although I don't actually own a Mac yet, but I've used Apples and Macs quite a bit over the years. When I moved from private school to public school in the early 80's, I went from using those ultra-cool Radio Shack TRS-80's :D to using Apples and Apple II's. Got addicted to them later afterthe introduction of Oregon Trail and Where In The World Is Carmen Sandiego? Would've got a IIgs in 6th grade if I made straight A's, but alas I was too lazy :p

Got to use the little 9" Macs in high school when I was on the school newspaper and yearbook staff (Talking Moose and Fool's Errand = \m/), but we had a PC at home, and that's where I've been stuck for the last 11 years, toiling to no end just to get my PCs to work smoothly for a decent amount of time. I've been attempting to make the move to Linux over the last couple of years, but just couldn't get comfortable jumping in. I always watched Apple during my PC years and liked their products but not the price. And when I heard that OSX was based on BSD, that got me thinking. Not enough apparently as shortly afterward, I spent $3500 on a Dell P4 (Dude, you're getting a POS! ;) ). The last year with that machine and Windows ME has been a nightmare and after hearing that an Apple store had opened nearby, I decided to go last month and take a look. I'm now officially hooked and biding my time until I can snag me an iBook (still having troule deciding between that and a Powerbook) w/ Airport, an iPod and maybe a new Palm. I've spent over 5 grand the last two years just on hardware, and when I think of the kind of Mac (or Macs :D) I could've got for that kinda cash, I get a little irritated, but I guess better late than never, right?

Since I rarely used Office XP on my Dell, and Starry Night Pro includes the Windows and Mac version on the same CD, the only software I'll need to buy is Quicken and a firewall for my DSL connection.

And a friend of mine who I've been trying to sell my PC to recently told me he doesn't want my machine, he wants a Mac (he's never owned a computer before). He's pretty close to getting an eMac for his personal use and to run his business. I guess telling him I was trying to sell my PC to get a Mac wasn't such a bright idea :D

soilchmst
Aug 21, 2002, 12:15 AM
Its ok to try to sell your pc to earn money for a mac. Even Bill Gates said he loves his mac ;) :p
I have used a mac since a Mac 128. I have fried one mac (a Mac 512), and maybe a clone (the motorola in the garage). Macs last forever, and if the printers keep working  , they last a damn long time.
Since this is a board for newbies, I would just like to encourage everybody not to get hostile on these boards. Some people are very dense, and others are PC apologists, but that is no reason to be hostile. Take the wierd and incorrect stats in stride.
Thanks to ARN and all of the great Apple snitches who allow us to get excited about our favorite platform.
BTW, if any one is an aggie or a chemist, I would like to know:cool:

Hi. My name is Nathan. I've been using Apple machines since the early 80s and a IIe. My first purchased Mac was a 2ci that I still use for MIDI work with Encore and MasterTracks Pro. (was using a IIgs until then that was decked out with a 100MB Vulcan HD (anyone out there remember those?), 8MB ram card, processor accelerator, sound card, etc.--quite something to think back on it and my father still uses it--alongside a g4 tower) I currently use a Beige g3 OS9, g4 dual 500 10.1.5 (I think), and an iBook 10.2 that travels between airport networks at home and work.

Since 1999 I've been managing a research and development project focused on providing teachers around the world online professional development courses in research-based education pedagogies. Before that I worked in and managed a pizza restaurant (just out of college), taught public school band and mathematics (I play trumpet), did research on (explored) how to personalize children's learning in classrooms/schools, and starting around 1994 built and supported a mac/win/netware network that served about 40 researchers and got them on the Internet.

I play in a community band, hike, bike, backpack, camp, canoe, cook, garden (vegetables--tomatoes, zucchini, corn (all of which I'm harvesting and eating), eggplant, just about ready, and herbs. I enjoy both live and recorded music of many types (always looking for suggestions), reading--more fiction than not, art in many forms, traveling when I can, and, well, a bunch of other things.

So, that's a bit about me...

Here are a couple questions that I've looked in the FAQ for answers but haven't looked much anywhere else--so the answers may be somewhere around here...

1) What do all the title designations mean? That is, what's a god, demi-god, regular, member, newbie, and folks with numbers in that location? What has been done to achieve those titles?

2) On the macrumors home page under each story is a positive/negative voting thing. Is that a vote on your reaction to the news story or the thread of discussion that is happening about the story?

Thanks and best wishes,

Nathan

numbers= 500+ non contributer

Hi. I cannot remember when I signed up but I have never made a post. I have been reading posts EVERYDAY for some time now and I am addicted to this site. I too enjoy the rumors and discussions. Please don't delete me arn.

I just want to say that, I agree with eyelikeart that Apple will never do a pda. That's because I see the big picture. And now there is a rumor that Jobs and Woz are working on a new cell phone. First let me say that I have owned 5 pda's and I have given all of them away. I finally realized that it makes no sence to carry more than one device between them. I just hope that if that rumor is true that they make it a world phone at the least.

Also, I would love to see some type of tablet from Apple with built in wireless technology. Laptops are great but they are too heavy and bulky for me although I do own one.

I aslo like this BB software you are using but you might find the same stuff from a free product by YaBB. I don't work there but I have been testing it for my site whenver I get the chance to finish it.

thanks for having this site. I cannot live without it.

Hey. I'm Adam. I am a former peecee user dating back to the old TI machines. Buddy of mine is an avid mac user, and convinced me to give it a shot when my former dell kept screwing me over. So I started coming to macrumors when I jumped in the market to buy a mac. Ever since, I've been on here everyday, checking out updates, and just browsing the threads. I must say this: there is none of this fanaticism in the peecee world. There aren't any expos or anything like that in the peecee world (that I know of) like the mac has. That is something that surprisingly adds quite a bit of excitement to the macscene. Keep it coming, Apple! My big news: I just bought my first brand new Apple computer last week. It is a Powermac G4 dual 1 gig, 512 RAM, Superdrive! It is the quicksilver model, but I love it, even though...alas, I have a problem :( After installing the 10.2 update, the thing has crashed on me EVERY DAY. I swear I'm not doing anything outrageous either. Once it crashed with only ichat open, once while watching a dvd, once with Excel open (in which I lost my file), and once the other day while browsing the internet. I don't know what the problem is, but I've been doing some diagnostics tests to try and pinpoint it before calling Apple. Does anyone have any suggestions? I posted in the Mac help area, but only got 2 responses, so maybe someone will lend a hand in here. Thanks ahead of time, and I'll see you on the boards!

As for my Mac history, I have been a user since the original LC. Moved up to a PowerComputing PowerBase 180 during the clone wars. Upgraded the hell out of that. And today I am typing on a two week old 17in iMac and listening to music on my wonderful iPod.

Here we go.....i and my better half just bought a mac a few months ago and I love it...We went the whole nine yards too....iPod, DV cam, Scanner, Printer, WCIII, the whole nine yards....I have been reading this site for a while because the love of my life has been reading your musings and so i was curious....For my $ there is nothing funnier on the net then some of these threads.....esp the threads about drugs.....i didnt realize so many people who had macs hated fun....

I thought owning a mac was akin to being cool like being fat is to being jolly.....
And the piracy thing....jeeeeeeeeeeeesh.....looks like somebody has his/her cranky meter turned up to 11....

So I will be offering my two cents, moderator willing, to the discussions...unless some meglomaniacal computer tyrant feels that my two cents are two cents too many.......so without further adieu.....here I am...

If apple doesn't come out with something revolutionary by the time I need another computer, then I am getting a PC. I will still like Macs, i just wont use them. That's about it....

Browse more then anything, enjoy some of the more intelligent posts, and a few of the silly ones. The only rumors site that i frequent. Actually the only board that i have ever posted on.... I love macs, I'm a designer so it's kind-of a requirement i guess. I've used both macs and Pee Cee's since I was was a kiddie, then I bought my B&W 400 when I left college and been a hardcore mac evengelist ever since.
I believe apple is on the way to the top of it's game... awesome OS.... awesome designers (even their receipts are cool), and soon to be even better computers.... (got some insiders at ol' IBM) currently I use a dual 867, my ol'B&W, running 10.2, 10 gig iPOD and hopefully a powerbook soon.... just tryin' to hold-out a little longer!!! This is probably one of the longest posts you'll get from me, I side more with Arns style.... quick an' to the point.

cheers:D

I've visited MacRumors for a while now. It all started when a college of mine bought an eMac for his school. (Both he and I are network admins a public school district). I was captivated by OSX.

Previously I had used OS8 and 9 a few times here and there, but it just didn't hook me. When I seen OSX though and seen the FreeBSD touches here and there...I had to know more.

I bought a Dual G4 867MHz PowerMac, Final Cut Pro, and a DV camera for my school. One of the teachers asked that I teach a DV class and the students fel in love with the mac.

I like computers, I like kids, I like cars....that about sums me up. Oh, and I hate programming.

Programming can be fun, though it usually is kinda boring. I like it. Yeah, Mac OS X tends to captivate people. Too bad it has a slow GUI. If it was faster, OS X would be the ultimate OS (it is already the best, just no perfect :D).

Hey all,

I started reading macrumors in anticipation of my first mac laptop purchase. (Which will be my personal computer.) I own a small consulting firm. I have an iMac that I bought to test technologies and try out solutions for my few Mac clients. I am currently using it solely in my office. 10.2 does everything I need and seems more reliable so I am switching.

My first Mac experiances were on a Mac Classic at a friends house. My former business partner was a big Mac nut, but during the biege period at Apple he moved more towards PC's. He is getting back into Macs and I am about to follow suit.

I like the reliablilty most of all. I am tired of Fixing Windows. I do it all day long for my clients. I want something that works for me, and I like to bad talk M$. :) (Although I usually recommend them because it is hard to get an office to switch. So I will lead by example.)

The first time I ever used a mac was when my mom brought home an LCIII from her job (she's a teacher) and I have played with them since.

I’ll be honest. Prior to actually using the latest macs, I was a basher (you know the type). I would probably still be a basher today if my then neighbo hadn’t dared me to deviate from my wintel world. The first time I used Mac OS X, I knew i had to have it. Apple enlightened me beyond Windows and redefined what a computer was to me. In November of 2003, I plan on moving to the then latest model of the iBook.
Apple OS X. It doesn’t freeze. It doesn’t crash. It doesn’t require me to reboot when I change network settings. It boots fast. Its sleep function actually works. I don’t need virus software. There is no system tray. It lets me run a gazillion media and programming applications without taking a performance hit. And (even though my fellow peers won't admit it) it is beautiful.

My LCIII never needs repairs besides stuff I have done to it.

My name is Daniel Berman, I have yet to switch. I'm a student.

Well, I have been on this site for a few weeks now, and I just noticed this thread!

I'm a PeeCee user, for now. Been using computers for a while, bought my first in 1990.

I started as a Mac basher the first time I used them back in 1993. They were mostly Mac SEs, black and white displays, etc.

Macintrash was the term I used very often. Then I went to college and I used LCs, and other 68k color Macs, and finally PowerMacs.

Something started happening. I slowly started 'liking' those systems, and as I worked in the computing center (all Macs) I ended up supporting them and getting to use them more often.

I was very close to buying a Mac back then, but I didn't have enough money to buy a good system, and my pro-MS friend convinced me to get a PC, which we put together and used.

However, I became a Macless Pro-Mac computer user.

My first job after college, I worked for an ISP as tech support guy, I was the 'Mac Guy', supported Windows and Mac users on a PowerMac 9100 running MacOS 7x and Virtual PC.

After that I changed jobs, kept cheering for Apple and telling other people I met about how wonderful the systems are, but I didn't own one yet.

Now the switch campaign is on, Mac OSX is out, and there seems to be tons of cool things ahead. Not to mention the beautifully designed systems and the iPod. And the 'community' of Mac users.

I am a MacUser wannabe in the process of saving to switch!

:D

Now, that was the story of Macs & Me ... summarized! :p

Just figured I'd throw my info in.

I'm a newbie to posting, but I've been reading macrumors for atleast a year. However, I should be posting fairly often now in the help sections if I can help anyone. I was born and raised on Apple computers, just before Apple came out with Macintosh in fact. I've got Apple flowing through my veins. So I'm sure I can be helpful to those who need it.

Other than that I'll be sure to be posting on the political threads where I will join the ranks of a very small number of republicans. In fact I might stir things up a bit right now by saying what will probably be the most unpopular thing on these boards today: I like George Bush and I think he's doing a great job as president.

Let the flaming begin.

Hello again. I was registered here under a different name about a year ago.

I went away from here a bit back , tired of the prevailing tone ("Sheesh, newbies" etc) but returned when the serially-offensive brigade pushed off to Alphatech-land.

I'm a musician, back-line and recording-studio designer and I trade vintage guitars when I get the time and spare cash.

I'm from Manchester, UK originally, but I live in Florida now and like it here a lot. I run PCs and Macs for music and research and every now and then I like to get tangled up in a political thread.

I read a lot, though less than I used to. Currently into Salman Rushdie ..."Fury" and "East West".

Once again, love being in the USA, but I've no time for sh*tbags who rag on Europe without any idea what they're talking about.
Or folks who don't understand their own legal/governmental process......plenty of those here too:rolleyes:

Hi,

I'm a newbie to this forum but not to the Mac or to Apple Computers. I started with an Apple ][ Euro plus in the late 80s and then got a Mac SE in 1988. It was a two-floppy drive version as I was advised that configuration would allow me to continue using the machine if the external hard drive failed. I added two 40MB Seagate hard drives (5_1/4"!) in an external case, complete with PSU. All my friends said '*40*MB, and *two*-off?!?! One 20MB drive should be enough for anyone!'. To start with, I had a Ricoh daisy-wheel printer driven via a parallel-to-serial converter module.

That combination served me well for several years, along the way I upgraded one of the floppy drives to 1.44MB. the OS to 6.07 and replaced the daisy-wheel with a Personal LaserWriter NT. In order to meet work and Open University requirements, I had to get IBM-PC (errmm, am I allowed to mention those on this forum?) facilities but I didn't want the expense of another printer so I fitted the IBM-PC with a Dayna card (2000) and Copstalk software and networked it to the Mac SE and the PLW via LocalTalk.

At Christmas, 1999, one of the hard drives failed and the Mac SE system wouldn't boot. At the time, I was unemployed and could not afford a new Mac or to do anything about the hard drive so I soldiered on with just the IBM-PC and the PLW. Then the PLW fuser assembly failed.

Much more recently, I have been able to acquire several older Macs, a second SE, an SE/30, four (!!) LC3s, a Performa 5300 and an 8100/100, plus several monitors, all other people's cast-offs (I'm not proud). They all work except that the Performa can't see its hard drive but I'm working on that. I also bought another PLW on eBay at a fairly friendly price.

I've got the 8100/100 as the favourite machine at present, pending repairs to the Performa. It has System 7.5.3 installed and works OK in itself although the hard drive sounds a bit creaky. The problem is that it won't drive the Personal LaserWriter (The SE/30 runs System 6.07 and drives the PLW fine).

So, my current concern is to find a System 7.5 driver that will work with the PLW NT. Looking further into the future than that, I need to discover whether I'll be able to use the PLW with the Performa which will be using OS8? But this isn't the place for questions in that search.

Lastly, a question for the moderator: does instant messaging still work if I log on from a different machine and ISP from (than?) my registered e-mail address?

As for Pete W's question, I see no reason that would keep the PLW NT from working with a Mac. Go to http://www.info.apple.com and do a search for Laserwriter drivers. You should be able to find a set of Laserwriter drivers that are 7.5.3/8.0 compatible.

I just had to respond because I found his post funny because he
has all these old machines. It is funny. He is trying to get system

Reminds me of this:

Q: I have been trying to install a newer version of the Mac operating system for days and have so far had no success. I've heard there are some great features in this update and I'm really eager to get it installed. Help!
A: You're right, Jaguar is great and you should definitely upgrade to it from any earlier version of OS X. Now, where are you having trouble?
Q: What? Jaguar? OS X? What the hell are you talking about?
A: I'm talking about the latest version of the Mac OS. What the hell are you talking about?
Q: I'm talking about System 6. I can't wait to try out MultiFinder! That's gonna be rad!
A: Oh, wait, I know what's going on! I saw this in a movie. There's some kind of rare atmospheric phenomenon and I'm speaking to someone in the past!
Q: What? Are you high? No, you're not! It's 2002 and I have a Mac Plus I want to put System 5.0 on! Now, are you going to help me or not?
A: Oh. Huh. Um... "not", I guess.

I don't know if this thread is still alive or not, but i guess it's my duty to fill in...

i am a switcher, but from before the ad campaign. My last PC was a Gateway Destination with a 36" monitor (a beautiful POS), purchased in 1998. It lives to this day, but only as an entertainment center. After a year of function, it began to fall apart, and i bought my first mac. A sawtooth, i believe (dual 500Mhz G4, no CD burner). It worked wonderfully, and i was converted. Now i've added an 867 Quicksilver with Superdrive (last September), a TiBook 1 Ghz w/ Superdrive (last month) and just bought an original bondi blue imac as a restoration project.

My line of business is split between video/graphics work and the theatre. I use both my current macs everyday and have converted three friends this year (1 TiBook, 2 iBooks), and am currently working on parents as well.

I have been reading posts for a couple months, and just got the urge to register and post (i guess in the spirit of MWSF).

I'm a switcher too, but for about 2 years now. My first mac actually was a Mac Plus back in 87 and then a quadra 605 in 91 then went to pc because of my Dad. I now switched back. Unfortunatly I work with a pc all day and bearly can use my mac since I don't have internet at home, but hope to have it soon on Feb. meanwhile all I do in the internet is throught the pc at work...

Actually, I thought PeteW's post was a joke at first, but as I read on he was serious, so I didn't give it a second thought..... I mean I have an uncle (who is very rich btw), but everything he buys he gets second hand and he says "it's all I need, so why spend more" - that's why he's very right

I wish I could do that, and trade in my new cars for two used Buicks costing a total of $5000, and dumping my PowerMac and PowerBook for a MacSE and Performa....

I'm just a powerhungry bastard I guess..

**and a belated welcome to you PeteW!

Long time lurker here.

What a nice opportunity to register.. Arn has a good thing here! Such a beautiful community that it's impossible not to participate during times like these. I'm looking foward to bouncing ideas and aquiring new perspectives. I'm currently working on a Pismo 500 w/ 40GB 40GNX HD & 320MB. She's almost 3 years old but this new HD makes her brand new again. Yes, I'm guilty of licking my PowerBook's crack..

Pure Macintosh owner, actually. I started at age 9 playing on an LC pizza box and haven't turned back. I'm proud to announce that I've never had the misfortune of owning a windows system, although I admit to having the urge to bend when it comes to gaming availability.

Unfortunatly, I do have substancial windows experience. I'm working on a Computer Graphics major, but am currently earning my living working for Dull Technical Support... (Oh, the Irony.. preach Macintosh all through school to find yourself employed by the Dark Side.) Damn, those computers suck. I'm witness first hand. It's sad and I feel sorry for their (our) customers at times. That's ok though, because I take special care in subliminaly switching Dell customers. They get mad cause their $500 2350 isn't all they were promised on TV, and I tell them they get what they pay for and there are alternatives... :D

Occasionaly, I'll even get another Mac Geek on the line and it gets hard to shut us up, as you can imagine. Slowly but surely, the masses will follow.

Thanks for asking!

Heh, You got it! Several hundred other employees down there, and I know of only one other tech with Mac experience. Been there over a year now.

Dirt is plentiful.. and Jobs is right: Walmart. Quantity over quality (obviously). Oh, and the little people don't count. But squeaky wheels get grease, hard drives are plenty and parts are cheap. It seems they're in it for the short term because there's not much chance for a good customer experience, but at this point they've got such a hold on things, who's to say.:(

I'll take this PowerBook any day of the week; of course, you knew that..

I actually called apple tech support about a power supply problem with my power book a couple of months ago, and got a guy who owned a Gateway laptop and kept talking about it, so I just hung up and called back to get a different guy... I was shocked that Apple hired PC guys for their tech support. Now if the guy was also a Mac expert, I can understand, but he really seemed lost when I would ask him some basic mac questions.

You know, I'm almost willing to wager the tech you spoke to wasn't actually an employee of Apple. I say this because at Dell, they/we actually only employ between 1/4 to 1/2 of the technicians who troubleshoot their sorry excuses for computers.

The brunt of calls are relayed to outsource providers around the country and over seas. These are people who had some training in what's involved and pose as Dell tech support. Dell employees take what's left over. You can imagine the enormous call volume that is handled, and how it would reduce considerably if they could make a system that works out of the box 90 percent of the time (an exageration, but surprisingly too many systems are DOA). While I'm very proud of the service I've received from Apple, I wouldn't be surprised if Apple has a similar setup, although I agree they should at least be formidable Mac users!

On another note, I recently had a problem w/ the powersupply with my PowerBook as well... on talking to the technician, she claimed she was getting a 12" PowerBook soon. I question her sincerity, as I had a previous tech tell me near the same thing. I'm guessing that if they're Apple employees or even Mac users, they say such things to get us off their back. We all know how hard we can be to please.. ;)

Don't get me wrong.. I love Dell and think they/we have some great products...
[/sarcasm]

I must admit they pay well for my still being in school.. best job in this small town (30,000). I rank very well... within the top 10 of 500 for several monthes now. I only wish I had some more covert and effective ways to plant some "switcher" seeds.

Any suggestions? Please, Anyone?

When a caller complains that windows is crashing on them, you can say.... "well, Windows is a greats OS, not quite as robust as Unix which is found on Apple, but nevertheless a great OS.....bla bla bla"

or do they listen in on your calls?

and crashes are never a full on freeze. They are just an application
not working, and you have to force quit that applications. But macs
rarely 'crash' crash.

UnixMac
Feb 14, 2003, 10:00 AM
The only time I've had a Mac crash is when I was installing a app that was not meant to run on it, and this was user error, not to be blamed on the mac. My desktop Dual 500 has been running on OS X since "Beta" and even under "beta" I never had a system crash...

I run Disk Utility (Repair Permissions), and occationally run DRIVE 10 to drfragment the drive (every month or so). I also downloaded a freeware called Mac Janitor to use on my laptop that runs the Unix maintenance that normally runs at 2am on your computer at a time you choose. Use this if you don't leave your machine on all the time.

Hi,
I too am a newbie. I am not new to Macs though. I have been using macs since they came out. Well, maybe not that long ago, but I was there when Illustrator 88 came out and was using that in college. I am now a graphic/web designer and have been in the design field for 12 years. My first actual mac purchase was the Power Mac 7100AV. The AV was sooo much fun and I watched TV on it all the time. I could also connect to any video camera which allowed for a lot of video. Too bad the new apps weren't out then.

Anyway, I joined the site to catch up on all this sudden spurt of new stuff coming out. I now look forward to every Tuesday. I dont like this waiting for the only 17" to come out. By the time it gets here, it wont be the only one! Blah! I like when people post the guts of this new software. I love the close ups and having someone else disect the computer to see what makes it tick.

I use my mac for just about everything digital. Audio, video, web, and creating wonderful pieces of art. I should be on the next ad for apple. :D My father is a retired IBM computer technician. HE HAS SWITCHED! Unbelievable. It could have been all my laughter watching him try multimedia on a PC. :p

Hello! I'm new here, just to check out what's going on in the mac world. I'm not a mac user, but I did my best to convert my P4 machine to a mac (http://home.attbi.com/~alexstewart/ScreenshotMac.jpg) ;)

I really like the fact that OSX is unix based, so I'm just here to learn a little more about these systems.

I'm pretty quiet, so you probably won't here too much more from me...

Very impressive desktop... I'd like to put that on my XP box.. But the GUI is only the bonus for OSX. the good thing is the Unix under the hood... Up time now on my Dual 500 is 181 days 11 hrs, without a single reboot (except when installing OSX.2.3 and 2.4). My system is rock solid and I can do 2 and 3 hour encodes with Cleaner 6 and never get a single glitch, which was impossible with my Windows box.

Good luck..

Hehehe, that's not XP... I don't think it's possible to make XP look THAT different. It's Mandrake 9 under Gnome, with a few themes added :)

Yeah, If I hadn't recompiled my kernel a week ago, I wouldn't have had a reboot for about a month and a half.

hey guys, hmm, i feel like i'm at an AA meeting or something... "Hi, my name's Matt, and I'm a Mac addict"

so, i've started to come to MR every day now, Apple.com is my home page, so I can see if there's new stuff in the mornings, then off to here. It's certainly very handy knowing what is going on in the mac world, i never frequent any other rumour sites but this one, there's really no need right? I do like SpyMac though, they have some cool stuff on there.

anyways, i live and work in new york city (having moved here from england nearly 5 years ago) mainly as a freelance mac support guy so this site is becoming a bit of a lifeline. i'll therefore being contributing very soon....when are the 2002-2003 mugs gonna be available hmm??? :D

Hi everybody:o

I too been a lurker for the past year never really had the need to post anything until recently, just sharing information with other users. Studied software engineering back in the days of windows 3.1/95. Left never became an enginneer cause it was too boring. Worked and travelled for a while. then finally pull myself together to go back to University to study advertising/Photography. Yeap the industry uses Macs, used them at Uni loved them to bits. Finally got one my self. Now I own 1 bigmac and 2 fries. :D

Presently Working in Tokyo as a freelance.....I guess graphic design  Do photography, videos and graphic design..

One happy user. Now I dont care what happens in the PC world just as long as the new Powermacs are super powerful that I dont have to take all night to render then I am happy. Macs work for me and I clean them. Looking forward to get a new Powermac here in Tokyo, missing my little ibook and PM back home.

Oh by the way man name is Dave and I'm an Mac addict

Well, much like many of the other people replying, I have been lurking for about a year. I have always used Apple computers at home starting with the Apple IIe, moving on the LC, then the Performa 6300 and ending up where I am now.

I am looking forward to the rumored 970 and am holding off purchasing a new mac until this comes true.

BTW my name is, obviously, Deryk.

Thanks for this site, I really enjoy the information and look forward to becoming more part of the community.

(I copied this from my mistaken post in the Switcher's Forum, so for some this may be a repeat.)

Hey all, thought I would give a quick little background setup on myself. I actually had an Apple III a long time ago, and now I'm going back. After my friends switched over to Macs a year ago (Quicksilvers) and then convinced another friend to switch (800 mhz 17" iMacs) I got really curious as to why they ditched PCs. After messing around with them for some time I really started to like OSX and then new Apple designs. I started reading this forum over the past efw months getting accustomed to what people tlak about with Apple and what I would need to know before I made the switch. Well, my new 1 ghz 17" iMac arrived last week and I love it. It has changed the way I view computers. I went out and bought the O'Reily Mac OSX: Missing Manual book to learn about the file structure and get acquainted with the new OS. I really wnat to master it. Glad to be on the other side and I'm sure you will hear a lot from me from here on out. Thanks.

Oh, and a little bit of personal info. I'm 20, a college student, and a Digital Media major. I actually use Flower Power iMacs running OS9 in one of my classes and now I have started to use the labs that have the dual 450 Powermacs running OSX, instead of the PCS. I have a class in Adobe Illustrator and running it in OSX is so much better then Windows.

Bucked the trend and ignored all the PC users saying it was stupid to spend such a lot of money on a computer that had no software support, was only for graphic designers and had a stupid one-button mouse. Well, here I am with not quite the best laptop on earth - its "only" an 867MHz Powerbook Ti with 768MB Ram - but 10 times better than that, I have joined a forum where I can read as much about Macs as I will ever need, and actually be able to apply the advice without crashing the system.

Mar 17, 2003, 04:30 PM
Hello all. I joined the site last month, but I just found the forum. MacRumors has seriously cut down on my prodcutivity at work.

My story - I have a brand new PowerMac 1.4 and 12-inch PowerBook. They've replaced a flat screen iMac and an iBook. For very complex reasons, since switching a year ago, I've had five different Macs and my wife thinks I'm totally insane. I think I've found the two that I'll keep for years.

I bought (or should say, my parents bought for me) an Apple //c back on the day the local computer store received them back in junior high. I loved that machine and used it diligently until 1989 when I went to college. I was quite happy to buy an exact match to the set-up i had (inc green screen monitor and applewriter printer) on ebay a couple years back for under $100. Nostalgia. Upon my arrival at college, I was sternly instructed by my father to purchase a PC rather than a Mac, because I would need PC knowledge in the dreaded "real world." (In retrospect, he was right). My old Windows 2.0 IBM had an Intel 66mhz 286 processor and on it I learned how to survive in the most un-user friendly computing environment available. (Until I went to work for the government and had to use Wangs. Ouch!) The immediate payoff was that, in the (at the time) nation's largest college computer lab, broken down roughly 95% mac and 5% IBM, I never had to wait to get onto a PC, no matter how long the line was for Macs.

So I rode the Wintel wave through the 90's. Waited in line for windows 3.0 and 95. Never understood how they didn't get sued by Apple. I emerged from this haze at a BBQ in 2001 with some long-time friends who were talking about the new "OS 10." I had thought that Apple was out of business (or at least almost there), but I started to pay attention. I remembered that cube thing I saw at circuit city (how do you get in it to upgrade it? It never occured to me that it might actually have everyting you need IN the cube.)

So when it came time to buy a new system, I decided that Apple was the way to go. As I've said, I never looked back. I got to miss the "lean" years of being an apple user, which would have killed me.

No real point to the story, sorry I wasted your time. very happy I found the site.

I joined in late march.

Switched to Apple Feb 2001 for a better quality user experience. I work as a training and tech writing consultant for the big corporates in Australia. Felt that Macs and VPC had both gotten fast enough to make that a viable option when I get stuck doing help file development or something mindnumbing on a PC only application.

No influence from others. Didn't know anyone who owned a Mac - Alas, no pirated software - so has been an expensive endeavour. MS Office X, Adobe suite apps etc all adds up to big bikkies. Before switching, had never bought any software in my life (Save the OS that comes with the PC - say no more) and vowed that I never would. In hindsight has just made the experience more personally valuable.

I will never have a PC in my house ever again. Sounds impractical to some professionals, but think about it. How do we achieve anything good in life? How does anything become a standard? If everyone who uses PC's purely because they're the standard made the switch, Mac would be the standard. So, I figured unless I stand by my principles and go buy a Mac, I've got no right to complain about the 'sub-standard' Windows world.

And the crowd says...Amen! :)

Found this site early on looking for lastest rumours. Enjoyed some of the discussions, thought I would like to join in. Usually is an enjoyable experience, but sometimes some people do take it WAY too seriously. It's good to have a laugh in just about any context.

I've been a Mac user since around age five. I got my first Mac, a IIci, from my dad in 5th grade. In 6th grade, I got a used mac-clone which lasted all of 2 weeks, and I bot a Graphite iMac 400 a month later. Currently, I'm on a Dual 867 PowerMac G4, and I'm gonna try buy the first 970 PowerBook that comes out.

Greetings everyone! I just registered today. I got tired of not being able to reply to the interesting forum posts that the www.macrumors.com topics link to.

I am also a Mac Addict. I've been since 1994.

Arn, how many users are registered now!? Which number am I? The 10538th?
EDIT: Arn, I just found out I'm the 16,449th!

P.S. Panther will rule.

Been lurking for 6 months or so, ever since I started getting back into Macs.

First computer I ever worked on was a Apple ][e, then my dad had some DOS boxes for work I played with (ascii D&D anyone?)., finally in college I got a brand new Mac Plus with 1mb or ram and a whopping 8mhz processor. Splured for the 40mb hard drive, too!
Got it up to OS 6 something and then I got a job doing support for the evil empire.
Since then I have moved on to network applications work and started working with Unix.
Once I realized how cool Unix was, I started playing with Linux, but did not have a sytem of my own to work on.
Since OS X came out I have been just waiting (and saving) to get a Mac. The lineup has just kept getting so much better.
I was lucky enough to pick up a 400mhz G3 (Blueberry) from my wife's office and have been using it since.

Found MR while looking for something and been loving it ever since.

Oh, and the folding thing is pretty cool, my Mom has Parkinson's. :(

Well hellooooo!

First things first - last time I checked, December 2001 wasn't 3 months ago. Come on moderators, give us some peace!

Anyway. I'm a medical student from Liverpool, UK. I've had my first Mac (an iBook 600Mhz with CD-RW/DVD) since November, but I've used Macs for years, with my parents having until recently an Performa 5200 which was replaced by a graphite iBook.

I have to say the threads on these pages are great because they show despite the "1-world" theory, Apple isn't the only compnay that doesn't release things simultaneously in the USA and the UK (hint the Matrix and Sim City).;) Sorry- running theme in my threads! Anyway, I like to get away from the PC World - in the UK, I have never seen anything apart from a PC in a computer cluster (ironically, i'm typing this on a "RM innovator" - no I don't know who they are either), and we only learnt about Macs from a friend who used to work in the States. Also like the general community threads eg football (soccer) and Matrices.

Anyway, I'll cyall later!

PS: re-read Arn's original post - am myself outside quota! I'll just keep on whistling and stroll on by...

Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!

What an interesting thread concept. My name is Brook and I use an iBook. I've named my iBook Timmy. More specifically, Timmy the Gaypro, named after the legendary portable computer the Kaypro (see below)

http://www.obsoletecomputermuseum.org/kaypro-1/kaypro-1.jpg

I've been an Apple user pretty much all of my life, beginning with the Apple IIe I used at my school in second grade. The first time I saw Windows, I was in 4th grade, it was Windows 3.x, and I immediately said something to the extent of "What the hell is this crap? Why is it so ugly?"

In any case, I have red hair and blue eyes, I'm interested in music and film.

Ummmmmm *tries to think of more info*

Oh yes, my favorite musical artists inclue Frank Zappa (and the Mothers of Invention), My Bloody Valentine, Blondie, Depeche Mode, New Order, Sonic Youth, and David Bowie.

Okey dokey, I'm done typing.

Hi!
I just registered the other day. I have been lurking for several months, but decided I would like to participate in discussions. The first computer our family owned was a Performa 6115CD (1995). And it still works great!

I think this site is great! Keep up the good work!

Hi,

We bought our first Mac, a dalmation iMAC last year. We were sick and tired of all of the problems we were having with our Dell. The conversion for me (a lifetime wintel user) was somewhat difficult, but for my wife, she is doing great since she didn't have any prior computer experience to mess her up.

We've since bought an iBook as well. I'm on the road all of the time and I use that to connect to her. We love OS X, iMovie and iPhoto.

I like this website since I can get a lot of good information on problems I have with the OS. It's hard to teach this old dog new tricks, but OS X is very easy for me to use.

I've been "lurking" since I got a membership, and I really didn't have anything too technical to add to the discussions, but I think the members here are a very interesting mix.

I have been using PC's virtually all my life. My first computer was this strange thing that didn't work very well, but it had a Spider-Man game AND a X-Men game so I was happy.

Then later on we got this one evil PC (I belive it was a 250 with windows 3.1) and it worked... Sort of, I rember playing various games on it and it got a virus and the hard-drive had to get formated. Never really worked the same after that...

Then we got a 300Mhz Pentium II Gateway with Windows 95 and that worked for awhile. I always hated the fact that games didn't run real fast, but I lived with it. Then I "discovered" Napster and downloaded every possible song I could. Then it got a virus, and then the hard-drive went insane.

I currently have a 1.8 Pentium 4 maxed out with 512 mb of RAMBus Ram (Evil expensive Ram) and a GeForce 3 graphics card. It only gave me big problems when I ran Windows ME, my parents refused to take my advice and get Windows 2000 for some reason. The upgrade to XP has made for the best computing on the PC possible, but it really sucks for video-editing. I use Pinnacle's Studio 8 to edit my movies, but it is annoying beyond all reason with my evil PC. I really like my flat panel moniter, but besides that I need a change.

I need a notebook for College along with a desktop. I have never really considered a Desktop Mac, that is until I really started to play with one at the Mac Store. They are just fun to work with, and I know somehow I WILL get a 23 inch HD Display. (I got a nice scholarship... I deserve to be spoiled, right?)

The release of the 12 and 17 inch Powerbooks are what initially got me thinking about a Mac for College. Then there is me wanting more friendly and more possibilities for video editing. (I want to go to Film School after I get my 4 year degree. Final Cut seems like it would give me a nice edge) iTunes 4 has also made me "Think Different" because I really enjoyed how it works so well with the artists in terms of music sales and the new iPod. (Not to mention, the listening of your friend's playlists via Airport Extreme) Also, the Jaguar OS just seems to be 2-3 years ahead of anything XP Pro has given me. With the recent talks about the PPC970 I have really begun to want a PowerMac with a passion. I really think if Apple starts 64-bit computing this early there will never be a reason to use Windows ever again. I can only begin to imagine what Panther will hold for the Mac Users.

Hello All,

New Member here!

Here a little about me. (Not that my computer life is interesting at all)
The first computer I ever touched was an Apple (Circa 1982-83) We're talkin' grade school computer class on an American Army base in Germany. I really liked it but all we ever did was word processor type stuff. Maybe this started my negative Mac views. You know: stupid impressionable kid.

When my Atari 2600 game console showed up in our shippment from the States it was missing some important parts. (Read: Some idiot put a crowbar through the middle of it while opening the crate.)

So my parents bought me my first computer: A Commodore 64
It seems like all the kids who had a computer back then had a Commodore 64.
From that moment on I was a Commodore bigot. Even so far as to buy an Amiga 500 when getting software for one was just as painful as it could be.

In 1990 I went to work for Motorola. They had nothing but Mac's as far as File and Print services. I got a very strong dose of the Mac way (or maybe it was the Motorola Mac way.) That little blinking ? Disk or the unhappy face was very frustrating.
As I advanced at Moto the opportunity to become a Systems Administrator presented itself. Not just any Sys Admin but the glorified, Smug, I know more than you, Unix Systems Admin. Wow, and I loved it. Wouldn't you know my new boss was an Amiga bigot also. I think he runs that Amiga 1000 to this day.
Anyway I got into being a Unix Admin loved it (Still Do) Yadda Yadda Yadda.
An some point in the mid 90's I decided I needed a computer that I could use to actually share files with people other than my boss. So I was dragged kicking and screaming into the PC world. And although I have never really liked the M$ (that seems to be the standard way of refering to that company on this site) way, I have nothing against them as long as they're not in the server room!
:D

Now that's just a brief overview but I tend to talk too much. Maybe my character limit should be like 50.....
Oh well you could have stopped already if I bored you to tears...

OK so why the heck am I here!
My wife and I had our first baby in December 01 and I was determined to have all the digital video and pictures I could take of this precious child. I bought a Sony F707 5 MegaPixal Digital Still camera in Nov 01 and a Sony TRV27 Mini DV Video Camera last summer. Both of these cameras have worked flawlessly for me. Not to confuse things, I purchased a Sony PCV-RZ14G Digital Studio bundle computer last fall. This computer had it all the Giga Pocket capture card, Firewire iLink, 120 Gig HD, Blah Blah Blah...Did I mention the Power supply that catches on Fire!!!

Suffice it to say it is still a problem and I recently started the process of looking for a replacement. I will deal with this computer some more once I get a reliable computer. I have to send it to San Diego which would leave me computerless. My old Dell computer has already become a plaything for my 18 month old daughter. (Read: Very sticky keyboard, and very, very broken OS.) Let's just mash every button on this thing and see what happens.

Now about a replacement computer:
My wish list:
Killer digital picture/video editing.
Basic Email/File and Print services.
Did I mention Killer digital picture/video editing.
If it runs any form of Unix is a Huge +

This is my story and I'm sticking to it.
Now I knew that the New Mac OS was based on a Unix platform. But from my previous (yet limited) experience I didn't think there was any way they would give the user access to the shell.
Several weeks ago I'm in a store looking for my next PC purchase when I walk by the Macs. Now some angel must have known I was coming because there was a terminal open on the screen. I think I Pee'ed myself. Since then I have been doing research on the computers and available software(the software thing is still a pretty sore subject from my Amiga days)

I've been looking at the Dual 1.42's but now I'm waiting just to see what happens next week.

I went to the Premiere of Final Cut Pro 4 at the local CompUSA and yes I think it kicks Premiere 6.5's tail. So now I have the Final Cut Pro 4 software sitting on my desk just waiting for a new computer. And I now have a soon to be very Unused package of Premiere 6.5.

Live Learn and Learn and Learn............

Oh about me: I'm just a computer dude that talks too much.

Regards,

Hi all,

I've been a mac fan for as long as my family has had a computer. Our first mac was a performa 630. The first mac I bought (and still my current mac) is a G3 imac (440 Mhz). I've been waiting for the release of the G5 macs before buying a new mac so now I've got a Dual G5 on order :D sweet!

Anyway about me, um ..... well I'm a guy, I'm 22 years old, I live in Edinburgh. I graduated from Edinburgh Uni last year, I've got a BSc(hon) in Geology and Physical Geography hence the name.

I've been visiting the front page for a while so I thought it would be a good idea to join in.

Anyway see you around.

I am Pete, 44 single, living in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Started my career as a mainframe operator, currently 'Desksite support employee' at a network with over 700 PC's. Always been very much interested in Apple. Since the first MacIntosh, but the original Mac was too expensive for me, so I had to settle for a 'poor man's mac', a Atari Mega ST4. Then came the compatible issue in combination with my work. I did have 2 PC's. When Apple released OSX and solved the compatible issue (TCP/IP, Samba and Office) the temptation became too much and I bought a Powermac G4/800 SP. I am currently waiting for the release of the new 15" Powerbook.

Hello

I've been kicking around for a bit, but mostly in the chatroom - I realised I'd never popped in here to gawp in slack-jawed bewilderment at the shock and awe that is the MR new members thread. So here I am. Feh.

I have posted a few times already. I don't know how many times...I don't even know how to find *out* how many times...but I'm waiting to earn lovely lovely cash money so I can blow it all on a hot, fresh G5 and a MacRumors demigodness and a commemorative mug.

[V/O: We're out of mugs.]

...Oh, well....a box of bees would be fine, whatever you have there, some staples, anything. A doughnut, anything.

Right, I'm going to go back to kicking around.

hello everyone,
I've owned a mac since the mac classic. God, I did a lot stuff on that old machine. Now have a indigo 500 mghz imac that I love. I've been checking out mac sites, especially in the build up to WWDC, and thought I would register here because this site seems to be full of knowledgable folks. So far so good.
Personally, I'm a 40's age father of 2 teenagers, who is going back to school. I'm studying classics and archaeology if there are any others out there who are interested. Oh, I also have a passion for progressive politics, which I've found out can get you into some very interesting (?) discussions here.

what do you think will happen when barry bonds becomes the sf giant with the most home runs?...btw...where is he at now?

somehow, hank's home run record still seems realistically out of reach for bonds

I'm sure they will stop the game if it happens in SF and honor him in some way. The SF record (469) is held by McCovey and he is 2 behind him (just past Mays on the SF list.) Bonds has no chance to pass Mays as all-time franchise leader (Mays hit 646 as a Giant.) As to Hank's record - don't be too sure. Seventeen more this year and he ties Mays, 40 more next year and he's at 700. That leaves 2 years on his contract with an average of 28 a year to pass Aaron. If he stays healthy he has a shot.

P.S. - I was at the game when he stole his 500th base. Great game, I don't think I've seen Barry run that fast in 7-8 years!

Hello !

Just found this thread.

I am a independent filmmaker who is trying to deside between a PC and a Mac. As a desktop Dual 2Ghz G5 is very, very attractive. Both in terms of design & raw power.

I have started my computing with Sinclair Spetrum 48+, Next one was an Amstrad 1640 With EGA display (it was very cool during the time) When I went to University I bought a HP Omnibook which is still in use. As you can see I have not been faithful for the platform so maybe its time to move to Mac :D

Greetings from Washington state ....land of the dreaded Microsoft. Oh well I managed to buck the trend for quite a few years now. Some of us like to have a computer that we know is going to work everytime we want to use it. Personally I don't have hours and hours to spend on hold to tech support.

Anyway I'm not new to Mac but I am new here. I learned about Macrumors from someone in the Yahoo Mac chat room. It looks like fun!!

I have an ibook but I have to work with PCs all day --oh the frustration. I think there is some significance to the abbreviation PC for personal computer and politically correct . . . in other words, those who run with the herd use PCs I guess.

ME: Hi, my name's Don, and I'm a Mac-a-holic.
GROUP: HI DON.

I've been a Mac-a-holic since, geez, I don't know what year. My first Mac was a Mac Plus with a half meg of memory and a 30-meg external hard drive. I clearly remember being astounded at 30 megs of memory. I also remember having to use a soldering iron to install more memory on the board, and also thinking it was wicked cool that the Mac team had "signed" the inside of the shell.

Since that date I've owned about 10 other machines (including a Cube which is completely fried and useless), and am currently happy with my G4 400, but jealous of the new hardware I've been seeing lately.

I consider myself to be one of those Mac users that's probably above average in skill, but am completely dumbfounded by the level of technical knowledge displayed by some people.

One of these days I'll win the lottery and buy a maxed-out G5 and a huge plasma television set to hang on the wall as a monitor. Now that would be COOOOOOL.

Hi, I've only posted a couple times and have been lurking a few months. In May, I got my first mac since I was 18 (Mac Plus).

I seem to frequent this site more than just about any other these days! It seems I re-joined the Mac community at just the right time. It is quite difficult to remember the last time I was so excited by new innovations with computers. All of a sudden I feel like a kid again! :)

Currently, I live in Arlington (Crystal City area) and work at the National Science Foundation. I'm originally from Huntsville, Alabama - home of the rockets!!

My very first computer was an Atari 600xl w/ 16kb ram and a cassette drive! My cousin had an Apple II which I dearly loved go to over and play a Lemonade Stand game on! In school we used Apple IIe's. I'd get bored in computer class and start typing out lyrics to whatever I was listening to on my iPod. I specifically remember sitting there typing out all the lyrics to Faith No More's, 'The Real Thing.' :)

Greets to all the other fellow newsomes and to all the old n crusty regs. :)

I'm Rev, i give bad advice, and wrong information all the time just to piss people off... LOL :D

FOR THE RECORD I'M JUST KIDDING

everytime i use to look for information on a search engine, macforums came up with advice, or a topic that was covered which i needed help with.

Eventually i decided to join in early to mid September, now i've really gotten into it... you probably saw me "flooding" the threads in the last few days with titles like "FIREWIRE DRIVE GETTING ON MY NERVES" or SCSI "HELL". if they know anything, the members are more then happy to give advice or point in a direction - join in on the "EVER BEEN DRUNK FORUM if you already havn't - we've got some wholesome discussion going there"

I've been a mac user for 4 years now G4 400 AGP with it being primaraly used for video and photography - i used an HP for two year prior to that for the same kinda work- and i did really do any work because i spent more time figuring out how to get stuff to work - i have a great distain for Windows

However, I'm a firm beleiver that a computer is a tool and comes secondary - and in general i hate using a computer. With that said

"the only way you'll get me to stop using my mac, is if i die and you pry my single button mouse from my cold lifeless hand"

some good advice, is that if your looking to slack off at work - check out the archives to kill time and be easily entertained!

of course, i'm a fan of all things apple! maybe its the cult/fan base, maybe its the innovation. or... maybe... being from detroit - its a bit of underdog fanatisism!

no, really - i thought it would be good kharma to finally start posting after reading so much free info, and what better way to add to that by contributing for a subscription! i do feel warm and fuzzy, but i fear that feeling may end sometime

plus, its a clean slate if you make your first post in the newbie forum! i'm all about the significant numbers and dates!

Hahahaha!!!!

Are you kidding me???

What with defective RAM in the spanking brand new G5, leprosy on the screen of the even newer 15"PB and corrupted/lost files due to file vault and Firmware incompatiblity with external HD's.

No thanks, my teachers always taught me that an education is an excellent investment. Their advice hasn't failed me yet. If I had switched without educating myself first, I'd be kicking myself right now.

I'll happily wait for the second generation G5 and updated Panther. Not because I need the extra speed of the faster CPU - I don't - but to give Apple a chance to at least iron out ALL the major bugs :)

Till then, I'll educate myself on the forums and play with my daughter's new iBook when I get it for her next month.

Gary who's soon going to switch to mac :)

Hello all! I'm the latest newb. I've just ordered my first mac. A G5 on which I plan to do quite a bit of video editing. Seemed like the right time to make the "switch" as I'm still in college. I will, no doubt, be spending the majority of my time working with it. Anyways, I'm excited that I'll finally be liberated from windows hell in a few days.

I was probably on this board in one form or another (was big at eworld in 94!) but I got kidnapped by Wild Bill and his Hole in the Window gang back in 1999. While I still have my Beige G3, I had taken a job that was windowcentric, and combine that with my DH need for a dedicated windows box for his software that was faster than my poor mac, I stumbled :(

But I'm back! Now with my own company, new G5 and studio display...not to mention OSX! ufda! I've been in OS 8 too long! Wheeee!

Hello from London, England.

I think I am new. Have been coming to Macrumors for a while now, and registered a while ago then completely forgot.

Tried to register a while before Christmas only to realise I had done so before without remembering... So I guess you could say I am a "new" previous registrtee...

So, though I have observed, I have not participated.

Really enjoy the site; and rather like the new redesigned main page. Am looking forward to the re-style for the forums as well.

Have a nice day.

Guess I missed this thread :p I have been reading this forum for a few months and finally decided to register like a month ago. So far I'm having a great experience, lots of friendly knowledgeable people. I've had help with a couple of problems, and have hopefully shed light on someone else's problems or helped in some way. Go macrumors!

Thought I'd post a quick 'hi' to people too. Like Muskie I've been reading the forums for awhile now - but I've just never bothered to get around to registering, simply because I never really had anything to say. ^.^

I admit it: I'm not a Mac owner - woe is me! I'm looking at picking up an older G3 iBook or Powerbook - but you know - money. If it helps though - I /am/ a still-happy owner of an Apple IIgs (bought in '86, and still running strong! Same for the Imagewriter II,) as well as a II+ (again, works like a champ,) and a Basis 108. (German Apple II+/CPM clone.) So - I've been an Apple guy since my early childhood!

Sadly, I'm posting on my Toshiba notebook - at least it's a decent notebook. ^_^

I use Apple a long time :) Never knew anything else... until I had to... Had OSX the fist day it came out. Was a bit into UNIX already, so it was heaven and still is...

Anyway, I have hobbies too, like playing guitar, cooking, biking, computer (ofcourse), partying and a lot of other things... Sometimes I have quiet a bit a hectic life...

I joined just the other day after checking out this website daily to look for powerbook update news during the summer and looking at the iPod rumours more recently. I ended up buying a 20GB iPod and want to get either an iBook 12'' or Powerbook 12'' at some point this year! This site's only problem for me is it's too damn addictive, I have to check it every day now and read the latest threads and news!

ps, any designers/photographers out there willing to do me a favour and answer a few questions for me, which will help me immensly with some coursework feel free to pm me!

Hello, I just joined today after checking out the site for about a month or so. I enjoyed reading through the many threads here and decided to take part in the action.

I do not own a Mac at all, but my girlfriend just bought a 15" PB that I have played with a little bit and I am in love with it! I am waiting for the G5 PBs to hit the market so I can buy my first one.

But I guess I technically became an Apple user when I got a 40 GB iPod for Xmas.

Glad to be here and hope to make this place a new home!

Well...

no lurking in the shadows for me... Registered today, and had to also make my first statement the same day (I'm a bit of an egomaniac and I love to see my own words in print - so print this).

I have been a MacUser since 1992 and have not looked back. The only thing I really don't understand is this constant competition between Mac and Windows users. At the office I drive a Mac, and at home the Windows machine does what I need.

Consider for a moment that you have two cars... once a nice luxury car where you can do whatever you do with the smothest of transmissions (transitions?), a car that practically services itself, and an overall super ride.

Then, the other car is your hobby, trying to figure out how the thing works, don't load it with too much baggage or you will crash, and and engine management system (OS) that is so complicated that volumes have been written for anyone to understand it. And when all else fails, you can always reinstall the engine, sending all previously accumulated miles straight to hell.

Yes, a good, healthy balance of Mac and PC puts things into perspective. You know how to fix Windows, but never have to rely on it to get you to an appointment on time.

I'm new here too. I've been a regular member of another Mac forum, and while I greatly enjoyed most of that forum's posters, I have grown weary of the more sarcastic and immature members there. From the little I've seen, you guys look like a breath of fresh air.

A bit about myself: I've been a Mac user for a number of years now. Got introduced to one at work, and fell in love with it. I take my forum name from the main character in the TV series Nowhere Man. I'm probably older than most of you (mid-40s).

Well I'm new around here, but old to the computer industry. I've used PCs all my life, but have recently purchased a PB G4. I know a lot about the PC world, so I'm looking forward to see what people have to say about them. I'm learning the OSx software slowly but steadily and I have no major complaints yet. But I will be sure to inform everyone of my complaints when I find them :) And since I still use my PC on a daily basis, I'll be sure to throw my comment in when people want to argue about PCs. :D

Hi everyone.
I've been a Mac user since '95. Started on a clone. (PowerComputing Power 100.)Then a Wallstreet PB. Just upgraded to a PB G4 15". Apple never fails to impress. I'm loving this machine.

Another newbie here -- James from Los Angeles. Mac user since my family picked up a Macintosh II when it first came out (can still vividly remember being awestruck by the graphics in Myst on that computer). Since then, I've had a Color Classic, Powermac 6100, PowerComputing PowerCenterPro 180, Powermac 8500 A/V, Powermac 9500 (upgraded with G3, which I still use for music notation), Powerbook G3 (Pismo) and STILL waiting for new Powermac G5s to come out.

i've been posting a bit lately but for the most part i am a newbie. Adam from Indianapolis here.

i'm a full time Producer . DJ . Live Performer (techno type stuff, check www.djadamjay.com)

i used to use macs in my younger years but have been in a 5 year prison sentence of Wintel , but now i am out on probation ;) was time to upgrade my laptop (which i use extensively for live performance and production) and figured i would give OSX a shot and if i hated it, i'd upgrade to a ::cough:: Sony Vaio. Bought a G4 12" 867mhz PB and well needless to say i love OSX. I was able to take the powerbook to europe for the last couple weeks and test it on the road and i absolutely love it. Bought my girlfriend a G4 ibook, because she had the worst virus luck ever on PCs, now she loves the 'cuteness' factor of her mac and we use iChat AV to talk while i am away on business. I also picked up a G4 400mhz Titanium for a good price and will be using both powerbooks in my live act from now on.

i've been fortunate to have a few friends that are macusers to get me back into the flow... i hadn't used a mac since System7! but i am loving OSX and i think its the ideal MacOS for switchers. Friendly, easy on the eyes, but not all in your face.
glad i switched back, now its time to start my G4 cube modification scheme =D

Well yeah, I guess I'm new... what with this being my first MacRumors forum post - but i don't feel all that new! Have been lurking for ages now, observing all the highs and lows that seem to be integral to the nature of rumour-discussion :D

A little history:
Mac user since '94, don't plan on switching until Apple stops creating computers!
My family's first Mac: a Performa 475 - (currently using a G3 iMac & clamshell iBook SE, via a 603 tower Mac).
Attended my first AppleExpo last September in Paris, and helped sort my sister out with a 12-inch PowerBook for uni.
My girlfriend is a Switcher-in-Waiting™ & she got her first taste of Apple when she won one of the first 3G iPods to hit the shores of England last year.

Thought i really should join so i could add my opinion to the others from outside Apple's homeland. Also, i seem to be hooked on the photography threads, so I'll probably post there soon. :D

I'm currently trying to figure out how and where i can use a Mac in paid-employment, now that I've graduated from university. In the meantime, I'll focus on saving enough money to upgrade to a Power Mac G5 (missed the boat for a G4 Mac with educational discount!)

Anyway, i'm looking forward to entering the fray...
Hope to see some of you other newbies around the forum :)

Hello there!

I am quite new to this posting thing, so sorry if I get it a bit messed up. I have been reading threads my boyfriend emails to me from MacRumors for sometime, & thought it would be cool if I registered so that I can reply when the mood takes me. :)

Above mentioned boyfriend introduced me to Macs 3 years ago, & I am hoping to get my own Apple (hopefully a G5) soon. Until then, he lets me use his G3 iMac or iBook. (as long as I am nice to them - which of course I am!)

Hope to get to know some people soon and get used to the whole forum thing :D

I have been reading MacRumors since august. Have been meaning to register here since then, but I am active at 7 other message boards so I'm kinda busy.

I have been using Macs since I could hold the mouse. I remember playing Solitaire on the original Macintosh. My parents followed the mac up with a LC 475 (with a CD-ROM!!!), then a Performa 6300 (which I use as a TV now), then a 1st generation Bondi Blue iMac, Sage DV SE+, a Flower Power CD-R (to replace the Bondi that got its motherboard fried). Recently I got myself a 10gb 3G iPod and my parents got a 17-inch 1.25 iMac and a 40GB portable firewire drive which is presently a little *ubared. I plan to buy a 12-inch iBook or hopefully a clearance priced 15-inch PowerBook G4 when the G5 PBs come out.

I have been a mac warrior ever since I heard someone in the school yard say something as ignorant as "Macs suck."

I love Macs. They are the reason I'm studying film.

Seem to have know about Macrumors for some time, just never got my feet wet. Here I am!!!

I started out in computing back in 1978 with a Sharp MZ2000 and shelved it about 2 years down the road. In 1997, a friend gave me his Performa 550. I was hooked again! I've since collected 35 computers or so. Most are Macs.

Need any parts? I've gotta cull the parts repository. Postage is all I want out of it. I live in Japan........ OOPS! I'm American, though.

Recently I'm breathing new life into a G3 Minitower. It's a respectable performer with Safari installed. My newest Mac is an 800Mhz flat pannel iMac. I guess I'm a hardware lover. My biggest project to date was replacing the flyback transformer in the DV 400 and iMac 233. Need the tutorials? Let me know.

See ya all around :)
