The title explains the question.

Do I need to shut down or sleep my macbook to connect to external display?
And why is that?

Nope. Just plug it in. You might need to go to your System Preferences -> Displays and click "Detect Displays", but you don't need to shut down, reset, or sleep your Mac to do it.

Are you sure it does not burn the video card or something like that?

I've never heard of that happening, but I guess I could be wrong.

No. You can turn on screen spanning, so you can move apps across from one display to another, or you can mirror the displays or close the MB's display. The video card won't burn out🙂
