View Full Version : MacUpdate Software Bundle Sale

Well, what do you know, Joel came through for us!
The unlock for Intaglio has been lowered to 3,800 - with sales currently at 3,769 and 14.5hrs left to run, that makes it a sure thing, so, if you've been holding out, now is the time to jump in.
More interestingly, the unlock for the $99 Tech Tools Pro has also been lowered, from 9,999 to 5,999.
Is 5,999 achievable? I believe so - I estimate that at least 1,000 people have been holding off for Intaglio, so, we could be looking at 3,800 (Intaglio) within the next hour or two, and then 5,000 within the following few hours.
Up until now, sales have been maxing out at around 24 per hr but this radical change should really get the momentum going.
Just to clarify:
1. The invites issue has been dealt with, just ignore them unless you want the free MacUpdates membership (value $20), in which case you need to give them 4 email addresses, real or fake, doesn't matter.
2. Ordering through MacHeist.com gets you the same deal but with some nice extras such as the excellent WriteRoom.
3. Joel was NOT lying about having a surprise up his sleeve - just pretty late in revealing it but, of course, he would have had to re-negotiate all this with the developers of the unlocked items.
So, get in there, enjoy the apps and spread the word :D

Yup, you read it right, sales have rocketed and Intaglio has been set free.
Now, with 14hrs left to run, the target of 5,999 for Tech Tools Pro is in sight.
Both the MacUpdate and MacHeist sites are struggling to keep up right now, so, that means that there were, indeed, a huge number of people holding out for Intaglio. Could we see this hit 5000 sales before the 12hr mark and then a steady march towards TTP? Things are getting interesting.
BTW, I've been playing around with BrowseBack and I think it's something I'm going to make part of my regular set-up.

I was referring to this.
I know what you were referring to, however, you said how i was slagging Mac Heist and Arn off only to then say the above quote. What i am saying to you is that the bundle i am talking about buying is not part of Mac Heist it is part of Mac Update promo where i know for certain the developers are being paid fairly. Therefore i have not contradicted myself in my statement
The content earlier in the thread was regarding Mac Heist and how i would rather buy from the devs directly instead of MH.

Well, let's put all the **** behind us and get behind what is now a great deal, so that there will be plenty more bundles like this in the future.
Anyone questioning the usefulness of the line-up should download demos and give them a whirl. I've been enjoying WriteRoom, Browseback, Little Snitch, iWow and Profcast.

Intaglio is now unlocked. Email me if you need an invite. Tech Tools Pro's unlock was dropped to 5,999.
Donnacha
Jul 16, 2007, 10:19 AM
Keirnna, no-one needs an invite anymore, they haven't for the last 36hrs - instead, if you actually want the MacUpdate membership, you are asked to give 4 email addresses AFTER you buy and they don't even have to be real addresses.
The whole misguided invites thing almost killed this promo because it was an unnecessary complication and put people off.
Anyone who wants this bundle, just go to macheist.com, pay $49 and you're set, no invite necessary.

People who have already bought and want to spread the good news about the early Intaglio unlock can help by digging it:
MacUpdate Bundle unlocks 9 Mac apps for $49.99 (value: $333) (http://digg.com/apple/MacUpdate_Bundle_unlocks_9_Mac_apps_for_49_99_value_333)
Would also be good if you left a quick comment.
With almost 4,000 sales already, I reckon that, if word gets out quickly enough to all the people who were holding out for Intaglio, there's an excellent chance that the 5,999 unlock level for Tech Tool Pro will be achieved in the remaining 13hrs.

Arn - how about a follow-up story / fresh thread on this as they head into the final 12hrs?
I can imagine you might be reluctant, given the kicking you already received over this, but I think it would be newsworthy, especially with the major changes and I think even Eenu would agree now that it is something most Mac users would like to know about.
Last time I looked, sales were 4,037, so, I think there's a very good chance of them hitting the ultimate target of 5,999 and that success is important if we want to see more bundles like this.

Yes, great idea, Donnacha, I second the motion.
Please help us hit the 5,999 target for TechTool Pro by posting a high-profile news update!
Thanks for everything, I love this bundle and hope to see more like it in the near future.
I recommend buying through MacHeist to get even more apps than are offered in the basic MacUpdate offer:

Yeah, running way more than 40 per hr, was exactly 4,082 with 12hrs to go but there is something a little screwy with their counter, probably too much load on the server right now, MacHeist is also having problems drawing numbers from it.
160 sales per hr needed to unlock TTP.
Getting to 5,000 will be the key.

I just purchased this bundle like I did the previous MacHiest promotion, and I'm happy with my purchase. GarageSale and Fetch (along with LittleSnitch!) was worth the $49 alone. Hopefully we'll be able to get Tech Tool Pro! :D

If you click "buy now" at MacHeist it just takes you to MacUpdate with a simple special link. The transaction is done at macupdate and they inform MacHeist later.

I'll be interested to see Intaglios upgrade deal given its nearly in 3.xx, it seems most have bought the bundle for this app alone
EDIT: If that app is $89 normally and now people are getting it for $50..... then even a half price upgrade means it would cost you more than the full retail version. I just hope most people find a use for the other apps as people tend to use 1-2 programs from the 10. Personally i am going to wait for version 3.xx, trial it then buy it.

I repeat:
There were a couple of very interesting upgrading deals for some apps bundled with MacHeist. Several apps got free upgrades. Only for one the upgrade price was not a special deal. A pair saw no new versions.
I don't think that holding back to buy a newer full version later is such a good idea.
And most people didn't buy the bundle just for Intaglio.

I read the whole thread. Only a few people said they were holding for Intaglio to unlock. Same at macupdate.
There was a special promo to get FotoMagico to Pro 2.0. There was some other little app I forgot for which there was a very little upgrade price (maybe not special). RapidWeaver point upgrade is regular.

I'd be surprised if the Intaglio upgrade cost half the price, but even if it did, you're paying about an extra $6 for the rest of the apps compared to paying $89 for Intaglio.
It's not looking good for TTP, but it's still a great deal

That being said... I have TechTool Deluxe (with APP) already... is it worth for me to buy the bundle for 2 maybe 3 apps ?!
I know other apps are great but i know i wont use the drawings one.. (intalligo and drawing...)

Little snitch and SRS are great apps which add up to over $50.
Cocktail is a really awesome program too.
If I were you I probably wouldn't, but I'm a starving college student. If you have the money, there are many apps here to play with. Cocktail and iWow are really, really fun. Little Snitch is very necessary for someone like me who is always on the lookout for malware, even on a mac. I also don't like anything calling home without my permission :).
WriteRoom is interesting too, if you write at all. I used it to write a very carefully-worded letter this morning and it definitely helped me stay focused.
Browseback, I hear, is great. I heard it won an award somewhere. I don't keep a web history but yeah, I've heard good things.
Exces is a cool progam too, I'm going to be using that one a lot (certainly makes things easier, dealing with protected data).
If you do anything creative, you should consider getting this package. Image manipulation and conversion, audio, and drawing are all well represented here.

I'm glad I bought this bundle, but here a few lessons learned by watching how this promo unfolded:
1. Jumping in early was rewarded by, initially, NOT receiving a free $20 MacUpdate membership and then, later, this was modified to being given a free membership only if you gave them 4 of your friends' email addresses. People who waited until later and used the resulting invitations received a free membership automatically.
2. Jumping in early before it became clear that were better off ordering via MacHeist meant you missed out on some really great apps such as BrowseBack and WriteRoom.
3. Following the sales figures was enjoyable but frustrating at the same time because, of course, they are now hiding whatever they sell above 5,999 (and, of course, you can bet it will be quite a few).
4. The whole count-down was nonsense anyway, because they immediately tacked another 3 days onto it so that they could cash in properly. I've got nothing against them making a profit, they deserve it, but it does rather defeat the purpose of having a countdown.
5. The organizers behind respected websites can sometimes be surprisingly inexperienced and immature, wasting valuable momentum in the vital middle stages of a promo by retreating into a comforting blanket of paranoia and self-delusion, when they should, instead, be on the phone to the developers, re-negotiating a much earlier lowering of unworkable unlock targets.
5. ULTIMATE LESSON WE'VE BEEN TAUGHT BY MACUPDATE: Jump in as late as possible and let others take the risks and suffer the managerial cock-ups.
But, yeah, it's been fun and the bundle is great, especially with the extras you get for ordering through MacHeist, I heartily recommend that you all get yourselves over there sometime during the next 3 days.
PS - Tech Tools Pro is NOT, as someone stated above, the same as Tech Tools Deluxe which comes with AppleCare, it is, apparently, quite a bit better.
Bye bye everyone, I'm off to Ireland for a vacation :D

Still not happy, huh? Joel implemented every change you requested (I think the unlock points were even the same), and delivered all the software promised and more (after you called him a liar, I might add.)
There is no pleasing people, I guess.
But, since you gave the points, I feel the need to respond even though I know I should give up...
1) I thought MacHeist was a better deal since I didn't see the need for the MacUpdate membership, so I went with MacHeist, but the whining caused Joel to give everybody the chance to get the free membership (you only had to send out ONE invite, if you bothered trying it.) So I ended up with an unexpected bonus, as I am greedy (or I thought I was until this week.)
2) MacHeist was doing promos for this before it was ever posted at MacUpdate. I received my first email on July 5th because I had signed up for the mailing list. And yet somehow I still didn't think the MacUpdate memberships were for the buyer after reading the very first promo.
3) "Following the sales figures was enjoyable but frustrating at the same time because, of course, they are now hiding whatever they sell above 5,999"
True, it was fun watching watching the counter and frustrating watching people libel the organizers, but I'm hoping they will show the live counter again, as they do seem to respond to requests.
4) "The whole count-down was nonsense anyway..."
Wait, I thought it was fun.
"...it does rather defeat the purpose of having a countdown."
Really? You just posted a minute by minute calculation on their website of the sales required to meet the goal, and you can't see the purpose of the countdown? Do you believe they would have made the goal tonight without the countdown? If they just posted the bundle and stopped it at a random time, do you think they would have made it? It seems like good marketing to me, and I thought you were one of the ones that suggested lowering the unlock goals and extending the sale (but that might have been someone else.) I thought Joel timed everything fairly well, since you can't move the goals too early or people will expect you to move them again. There really needs to be some urgency in sales like this.
5) "Jump in as late as possible and let others take the risks..."
Wow, you really learned nothing from this, did you. That is a perfect way to never meet the goals in a community based promo. If everyone waits for someone else to be the first, there is not first sale, let alone any goals being reached. I jumped in early in this and the old MacHeist, and I had fun and never regretted either. I didn't assume everything would be unlocked, so I was extremely happy when it was.
I thought from your cheerleader postings on MacUpdate at the end of the countdown that you had finally been pleased, but I guess that isn't likely.
I really don't see how you can critique this after all that went down. It's not like people were calling you a liar when you said all those things about Joel that didn't turn out to be true. Funny isn't it?
Sometimes life is just how you look at it.

bgillander:
I decided to remain positive on the MU site and helped along with calculations or whatever simply because I didn't want to see all the people who bought in early stranded by the managements mis-steps; that does not mean that I agreed with the behaviour of the management.
Yes, it's true that they implemented all my suggestions (and I'm not even saying they were taking my suggestions, it's just that their own eventual solution coincidentally matched the one I proposed from the start), but they wasted a good 48hrs fannying about, wasting time on self-deluding nonsense and, just for future reference, that needs to be recognized, so that other promos organizers can see how NOT to react when the crowd fails to follow your exact script and sales fall into a coma.
I did suggest that Joel might have lied, that, if not, he was leaving it awfully late to come through on his promises, but when, at long last, he did come through I was the first person to acknowledge that here and on the MU site. Also, what he delivered made all the difference to the bundles value proposition and I put quite a bit of energy thereafter into getting the good news out there. If Joel found the attention, speculation and scrutiny uncomfortable, he should not jump into a scheme whose very oxygen is attention, speculation and scrutiny.

I agree with some of your points. It could have been handled smoother and jumping in early would screw some people out of what Macheist was offering. I didn't go via Macheist because initially I found it a bit confusing and wasn't even sure if it really was the same promo. They later updated their pages, which looks quite nice but I had already ordered thru MU.:( Maybe it should have just been one website offering the promo?
I found the countdown to be fun because it creates tension as in will we get this or maybe not?
I disagree with your ultimate lesson though. If everyone jumped in late things might not have been unlocked. This might have caused a loss of excitement. Yea extra days might have gotten tacked on, but the chance of not getting something adds risk and adds excitement. If everything had gone smoothly from the begining there probably would not be a need to jump in late.

Im happy as hell to have got in on this....and the fact things were unlocked today but a bigger smile on my face at work! Everbody at work thought I was nuts as I got the email thru my iPhone and I was all excited! They just don't understand! I was happy before this changed too but now that I can use Intaglio and TechTools it makes it that much cooler!
Thanks to all of you for your comments and info, and I cant wait to get some free time to test this stuff out in depth!

I'm a complete newbie here and I'm thinking of doing this. However I haven't got my Macbook Pro yet, I should get it in about a week. I see that this is apparently done by sending you a link to the application in your email. Is there a time limit on the links that they send you if you buy this? I would hate to pay $50 for this and end up with nothing.

I think they are adding mirror sites for downloading, under the FAQ
Q: TechTool Pro download - Where do I download TechTool Pro?
A: We're currently uploading the full disc image to the Amazon.com S3 network so you can have really fast downloads. The file upload is currently 480MB (of 600MB) complete. We hope it will be finished before 2pm ET. Thank you for your patience. Also, make note that there is a link in your receipt under the "Special Instructions" section that a $10-off special offer to buy the physical DVD and have it mailed to your home.

Also from the FAQ:
Q: Download Link Availability - How long will the download links be available?
A: TechTool Pro's direct download link will remain active for 1-month. The rest of the titles are always available for download on macupdate.com.

Seriously though, I think they allocate it according to the size of the pipe, so if you have a stupidly fast connection they'll throw a lot more bandwidth at you than a slow one. So on dial up it'd be about 0.1kB/s .

Imagine if you were in Japan...
In Japan net users have 100Mbps lines, 10 times higher than the OECD average.
Japan's price for broadband per megabit per second is the lowest in the OECD at $0.22 (0.11p), said the report.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/6900697.stm
I was getting about 800-900kb/s for the first 250mb then it slowly went down to about 400kb/s. It took maybe 15 minutes total from the link in my email. I've downloaded game demos that took much longer, so this wasn't too bad just had to be patient. :)

Contrary to what some people might tell you, most developers don't rush out to screw over their users every time a new OS revision is released. Also, you don't really have any cause to think you're any less of a user to them just because this is the way you bought their software...

Ok i would hope so, but TTpro is an app that is really made for a specifik system is it not, so i would be surprised if that would work under leopard just like it is now, since it is now build for tiger.

Well, it's sure to require some sort of update just the same as it needs them occasionally to cover new hardware models, but I wouldn't assume it's going to be a major upgrade (i.e. 5.0) just because of Leopard.

I was thinking of the same thing, since I use a MacBook and the iMac often. I guess I'll try it out and see what happens, I'll install everything on the iMac and then on the MacBook. Some applications may phone home and complain if they notice they are installed on different machines but, maybe that's why LittleSnitch was included for. ;) :p haha

You should (eventually) get email with download links and/or license keys for every application in the bundle.

Pathfinder would get my serious attention. I had an early version of snapz and it was pretty crummy for screencasting, crashed my mac consistently.:( However, at the time it (I think during Puma/Jaguar?) was a really good for screen capture. The price is a little prohibitive now, but if they threw it into a bundle I could see people really going for it. I like iShowU interface better, but they don't seem to have all the bugs out of that one too.

I did not get my Writeroom or Pixelmator licenses. I e-mailed MacHiest, and I have gotten NO response from them, grrr. I go to the page to see if they can send it again, it says "You have already collected your licenses!".
I did this before TechTool was available (and before these two programs were), they need to let me re-submit my information I think. I did get my Exces license though. :(
Anyone have a better e-maill address for them than: directorate@macheist.com ?? I have a feeling this one is a dead end, although it's the only thing on their contact page.

Yes, exactly. When installing, you get a message that you have 30 days to ensure that you can boot up using your DVD.
BTW, does anyone know what the $15 upgrade to the "full DVD version" gives you? Is it just a DVD that they have burned, or will it give you the ability to upgrade more economically to the next version, which should arrive some time after Leopard?
