C&C Generals multiplayer

A friend of mine is having a LAN party in a few weeks, and I'm wondering if I'll be able to use the Mac version of Generals or if I'll have to get a copy of the Windows version and run it in Parallels or something? I know it's not possible to play over the Internet against Windows users, but will it work if I just type in the server IP address in the "Direct Connect" option?

(Running this on a MacBook incase the Intel CPU makes a difference.)

I've just tried for about half an hour to make that work with no success. Did you have any luck?

I'm afraid not. In the end I caved and used Windows. :(
