View Full Version : MBP External screen problem

I have my MBP hooked up to my TV (http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16824112174) by a DVI - HDMI.

My problem is that my MBP seems to be outputting a resolution slightly greater than 1920 x 1080 on all sides (acts like it's closer to 2000 x 1100). I have my resolution settings (in system preferences) for the TV at 1920 x 1080 and the TV supports 1920 x 1080.

This is annoying, especially so with screen mirroring on because the menu bar and dock are chopped off.

Any ideas on what is going on?:confused:

Are the Dock and Menubar set to the MacBook Pro screen, or the external screen? They can only show up on one or the other. Also, you might want to check to see if your TV is over-scanning.

When I have them working together, the menu bar and dock are on my MBP. This makes the larger scale of the TV less noticeable but it is still annoying.

Where it gets really annoying is when I turn on screen mirroring. The menu bar is completely lost and 70% of my dock as well. Along with some display off the edges.

I will draw up a quick visual to help understand the problem.

It definitely sounds like your TV is over-scanning, you'll want to check your TV settings to see if there is a way for you to turn it off.

The red box is the size that is being displayed while the black is what is viewable.

Overscan mode was ON under the display preferences.

With it off though, I seem to have the opposite problem (although it is 1% as annoying). Now the display from the MBP does not use all of the TV screen area.

I don't need it to, but its interesting that the TV is capable of displaying 1920 x 1080 but when it has a 1920 x 1080 input that it either displays larger or smaller.

Anyone know why this is happening? Why doesn't a 1920x1080 display setting fill a 1920x1080 TV exactly?
