Bathroom door, that is?

Yup, I dunno I guess it's a habit.

My bathroom is directly connected to my room. Even if the door to my room is shut and locked I still shut and lock my bathroom door when using it.

Edit: Pretty much all the exterior doors to my house are locked at all times. The door to the garage is never locked- the garage is the main entrance way. Nobody every actually ever uses the actual front door. So basically just if the garage doors are shut the house is locked.

No. There's really no need to. But I'm different with actually every door other than the bathroom! If I'm home alone, every entrance door is shut and locked, and if I'm in say my bedroom, I'll close the door.

Yes, I do close and lock it.

Yup. Closing and locking the door is one swift motion with our bathroom's doorknob. It's muscle memory for me. :)

I always leave my bathroom door open. But this is also because my bathroom measures about 3'x5' including the shower. If it was bigger maybe things would be different.

The door to outside I always keep closed, especially because people wait in front of it sometimes for the bus, or try to get in thinking they are at the accountants next door.

Sometimes. :o Really just depends. If I know gardeners will be around, I'll close the door in the off chance they can look in. Heh.

But otherwise, I'll leave the door cracked open... What? The cats like to wander in and out.

What happens in the bathroom stays in the bathroom.

Bathroom door, that is?
I always find this question interesting.

What constitutes a bathroom?

In the states, typically there is a sink, toilet and shower/bath in one room with a door.

In Korea, Japan, and other Asian nations, the toilet is in it's own room, with a door. And in another room, there is the sink, laundry machine (maybe -- sometimes they are on the outside of the house/apartment), and a door to the shower/bath area.

If you are referring to the toilet area, then door shut but not locked and the fan on.

No

Cat needs to get in to use litterbox

When guest are over then I close door, with cat inside.

When its family door can be closed - depending on what doing but NEVER locked, too many medical issues and past emergencies to do that.

Yes.

Always.

With the fan on. If there's no fan, some other means of noise making, like the sink. If I could have a house with an acoustically-isolated and separately ventilated bathroom, I'd be in heaven. I'd love a home with a toilet/sink "powder room" for each family member and a few for guests. Bathrooms shouldn't need to be shared. ;)

So I agree: what happens in the bathroom... stays in the bathroom.

And I need reading material or I'd go insane.

Or perhaps I already have.

I usually close the door. Even though there's no risk of being seen by the gardener or whomever since I'm on a higher floor, I just do it out of habit.

Never...2 out of 4 bathrooms in my house open on hallways. I kind of like being in a large open space. :D

No reason to lock in the fumes, either.

Yes I always close the door, though I never lock it. Ill probably still close the door even when I'm living on my own this fall -- it's just a habit, I guess.

Wide open when no one's home. I have music blaring alot of the time when no one's home so I keep the door open to hear the music.

Strange enough question that I never thought about it.

Of course the answer is yes.

Actually... we hang towels on our bathroom door, so it is almost never closed. Having spent most of the last 20 years or so with just two people, neither of whom were all that modest, it has never been a priority.

On the other hand, I'm very aware of closing and locking the door when away from home.

Yes.

Otherwise, my cat or 2 dogs would have come upstairs to see what all that noise was.

Yup, I was wondering this myself and if I was alone in my decision. I had a shower once with the bathroom door open and it just put me at unease and kept thinking about the bloody door. Stupid thing. I think got out of the shower dripping wet to shut it.

On another note I can't go to bed if the mattress cover isn't on properly. But that's for another OCD topic.

nope. why bother if i'm the only one there.

front and back doors stay closed and locked. rest of the doors can be opened.

I keep it closed out of habit.

Rodimus Prime
Jul 11, 2007, 07:49 AM
Yes I do. When going to use the john I shut it to keep any smell trap in the bathroom and not let it spread to the rest of my apparment and when I take a shower to keep the heat from the shower in the bathroom so I do not freeze when I get out.

Now I do not always lock it. Now door is always lock while I am in the apartment and when I go to bed I have a habit of locking my bedroom door and what makes that useless is one could get into my bedroom by going though the bathroom which is unlocked.

I voted no simply for lack of a "sometimes" option. Sometimes I close it out of habit, sometimes I close it because I really don't think I need the cat's company at that exact moment, but typically I don't.

I have an en suite bathroom in my bedroom, so the bedroom door usually stays locked, but the bathroom door is often open.

My problem with that I think is that then all the steam from the shower dissipates to the bedroom, so when you get out the bathroom is cold. I still don't know why I lock the door though.

You could always do it like we used to do it in the military some years ago.

You slept in open bays and had open bathrooms with multiple toilets with no stalls. Yes, it was very easy to ask your neighbor for TP or the newspaper. :)

You could even engage in community/group discussions if you were so inclined. ;)

Sometimes. It just depends on if I'm being lazy or not. Oh, and downstairs the bathroom mirror lends a perfect (albeit reflected) view of the television...so I don't have to miss a moment, if I'm alone. (:

Haha, well, I'm from Canada and I quite like it cold. I actually leave the air conditioning on the in bedroom at the same time. :)

Unless someone other than the wife and infant is at our apartment (or if they are sleeping and I want to muffle the flush), I never close the door.

#1 it's usually open alone or not, although my mom doesn't appreciate it. When there's guests over, I usually close it.

When I'm home alone, I leave it open, gives it a different experience.

It's weird, but if I am home alone I usually leave the door open when I use the toilet.

But if I am showering I close the door and lock it, and when I go to bed I close the bedroom door.

I don't get it.

Home alone? Depends on which one I'm using really.

I have one upstairs that is in a fairly open area, so that one usually stays shut, but the one in my basement I may keep open to listen to either music playing or maybe a TV show. Bathroom breaks come at the most inconvenient times...

Pretty much all the time. The only time when I lock it is when guests/little kids are visiting. My little nephew follows me around everywhere, including to the toilet :o I'll be doing my thing and I'll start hearing "Where's Simon?" "Simon, where are you?" :p

simple, it is instive and human nature, when we sleep we are defenselessly and helpless and the open door makes us feel more open to being attacked. Another reason is it also blocks light and sounds from else where in the house/apartment. I know that is the one of the reasons I like my bed room door shut when I sleep is it just blocks more like and sounds. As for locking it well that is just out of a habit when I lived at home or with a roommate and the reason I lock it was just so it kept some one from walking into my room with out me giving me fair warning and make sure I look semi descent

I've gone through several stages.

As a kid I was shy and self-aware, so it was always door closed and double locked.

Then as a wild young man busy mis-spending my youth (and what fun it was too) I was a door wide open guy. In one small flat, I even removed the toilet door to have more room.

Then I started hanging out with deaf people - where door open indicates noone in the toilet, but door closed indicates someone in (shouting to ask if the toilet is free is no use) - so I followed that custom.

Then I met my current partner, who was quite into feng shui and energy flows, who explained that flushing / draining water symbolised money draining away, and hence to always keep the toilet lid down and the bathroom door closed as much as possible. So now following her suggestion, I'm a doors closed guy (but rarely locked). Seems to work - I earn more than before, and save better too

(blimey that was a wierd post)

If a guest is over, then it's closed, and possibly locked. Otherwise it's usually open. If we're comfortable around each other naked, then we might pee in front of each other, so it'll be open for that too.

It's just more efficient to allow someone to use one part of the bathroom while you're using another. Locking the door while showering or peeing means that the other person can't use the sink, etc.
