hey, i put in a cd-r or dvd-r, which my macbook has always been able to burn. i wait a while and nothing happens. I tried to restart it and I get an alert that says this media disk is not readable. As i said before, i have burned dvd's and cd's before

First (and as is requisite with a wide variety of mac-related glitches) try resetting the PRAM and NVRAM (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238).
If that doesn't work, you may have to call up for service or take it to an Apple Store. Last time this happened to me was on a iMac Core Duo, and the drive had to be replaced (done under AppleCare). Unfortunately it took a week to repair as the local Apple Store had to order the part and wait for it to arrive.

thanks for the advice, i've already had my optical drive replaced once, and i really don't want to have to do it again. again thanks though
