3rd party cpu upgrades

Does anyone know what the deal with 3rd party G4 cpu upgrades is? These things are amazingly expensive (dual 500MHz G4 = $1000) and furthermore are quite a bit behind the MHz ball. Where are the 733, 800 or 867MHz upgrades? In the not so distant past the 3rd party updates were economical and usually just as fast as Apple's best stuff.
