View Full Version : Residents of Oregon town say shape of traffic posts is offensive

Only in Oregon

A total of 52 of the posts were installed at a busy intersection in Keizer and they are getting a lot of second glances.

A number of residents have complained to the city that the posts resemble male genitalia.

"I can't disagree with that," said City Manager Chris Eppley. "They certainly did not turn out the way we anticipated."

Looks like a standard post to me that I see everywhere. People complain about everything. Find a job.

Yeah well you would with an avatar like that. :p

But, seriously, they look just like posts in most other places, and I think the people that complained just have dirty minds.

:p True. True.

Portland is actually pretty liberal. There are more strip clubs here per capita than any other city in the U.S. I think these posts could cause a problem in any state, not just OR. You just have to ruffle the right feathers. Granted these are in Keizer, which is about 40 minutes south of Portland.

In China the penis symbol is celebrated quite openly, in parks, parades and such.

ANYTHING can be construed as "dirty" if you try veeeeeery veeeery hard.

HAHA, I said "very hard".........hard like my penis. Oh man, that's sick!

these people will be trying to change the name of the state because it sounds too much like a slang word for the male genitalia:rolleyes:

It would have been a whole lot funnier if they had parked the car with the wheels in just the right place...:p

Well I guess they are pretty imaginative there.

Nothing looks more like a male genitalia than my schools main parking lot...

My school is 2 stories tall, and this... shape is clearly visible.

There is a big difference between Portland and the rest of the state. So I can imagine people in Keizer freaking out.

the post doesn't even look that phallic.

on a similar topic, why does the American media find it necessary to blur out turds?

There's a festival in Japan where people (usually wearing traditional underwear) carry giant wooden penises around.

Seriously, I think it's actually getting quite stupid if people think that should be removed just because it's vaguely like a penis. Ice creams can look like an upside down penis:
http://everythingandnothing.typepad.com/photos/uncategorized/blackras.jpg

or a dog turd:
http://blogs.warwick.ac.uk/images/oliviavannieuwenhuizen/2006/08/16/ice_cream_cone.jpg

or like, well, yeh:

But that doesn't stop me from eating ice cream (no dirty jokes please :D)

The town's proposed solution (http://www.upi.com/NewsTrack/Quirks/2007/07/09/residents_complain_of_phallic_posts/9992/) is to attach metal rings and chains to the posts. Because there'd be nothing at all suggestive about that change

That's nothin'. The main interstate interchange in my town looks like a uterus.

No. I must have been looking in the mirror again or something.

You're right, it's too disproportionate. Too short and stumpy to be a penis. Imagine the girth a guy would have if he had a penis with the same proportions!

Despite not looking too much like a penis, I guess one solution is to cover it with a fitted sheet, preferrably waterproof so that the sheet doesn't get soaked and moldy from the fluids that makes contact with it (rubber or latex is a good material). That way, nobody can see the traffic post underneath it, and it would be protected from most disasters with a rather high rate of effectiveness.....probably around 98%.

Well, he may not bottom out in a tuna can, but he'll sure as hell blow the sides out!

Ok, let's remember this is a little town in Oregon.

Sorry, I grew up in Portland, so I'm getting tired of everyone dogging on all Oregon residents :)

Yeah we read a book in sociology course I took last term about a small town in oregon. Quite different than portland, in fact, people in the town referred to portland as "the people's republic of portland" if I recall.

Come to think of it, this thread is rather phallic, all long and slender like.

Well, quite obviously they have a problem with Bollards that DON'T have a Prince Albert. Evidently, in their little town a little BDSM bollard-modding is all it talkes to make things A-Okay™.:D:eek::rolleyes:;)

I drove through this intersection the other day on my way to a wedding... I didn't even blink.

This reminds me of the episode of South Park where Kenny threw the shuriken in Butters' eye and nobody in the town cared because Cartman got up in front of the actionhouse naked.

As Sigmund Freud put it, "Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar."

I'm not clear on how the shape is "offensive" rather than "suggestive." Particularly when there is nothing inherently offensive about either of the things in question.

Now, should they both be on public display, that would be another matter.

Though not so much offensive as: "Thanks for sharing, but I don't really need to see that."
