Ok - here's the question.
I noticed the other day that a lot of junk mail has a load of random characters at the end of each email; like this 1j6iq4u81ng
oihnah1ehqm
(taken from the end of an email advertising free viagra)
so whats the story? anybody know?

I've been wondering about that myself. All it seems to do is make the spam even more obvious.
Maybe some ISPs have some sort of e-mail filtering software that flags the messages before they get to you?

I always get those emails. I can't actually tell hotmail to filter out ran dom letters. :(
Damn them all. Why should I get a "penile enlarger" spam email every day. Give that email to those who need it and leave me alone. :D

I always assumed it was some kind of code that somehow helped the spammers keep track of the spam. Like, if you have 100 people sending out the same message, you could tell who's were being replied to by the 'code'. If that were the case, though, you'd think the codes could be simpler. It probably just has someting to do with getting around spam filters.
I'd love to know the real answer (if anyone here is a spam insider).

I think it has to do with avoiding detection, if you were to send that spam in to say spamcop then it wouldn't do any good unless you were to delete the code first, I've heard that without deleting the code if you send it in your spam may even increase.
Very odd and I don't quite understand it fully.

Does the "bounce back to sender" thing really help against spam, or does it just make it worse?

Most of the cases, it's an identification code. If you reply and keep the subject, they will know the address worked even if you reply from another account.
Rule #1: Don't reply to Spam at all.
To the guy who wants spam send to him: It's easy. Just post your e-mail address on a few webpages. If you do it for a while, you'll be getting up to at least 50-100 spam messages per day, as I am. And then you will discover the joys of spammers using random addresses at your domain and getting all the bounces for the messages spammers send to invalid addresses, like I did.
If you're serious, I can send the discarded output of my spam filter to you ;-).

This can help in some instances, but more often than not, the spammers are long gone from the 'Sender' account before you get their mail and bouncing it won't help or hurt. On the other hand, clicking on the 'Remove my name from the list' will most definitely make it worse!

The "Bounce to Sender" option can backfire in some cases. If you bounce the mail too long after it arrives then it will confirm to the spammer that the e-mail does in fact exist and sometimes can result in more spam.

Though I think the herbal pills work by shrinking mens brains, that way they only think something it's growing.
But the one operation they shut down here in the valley did grow the wallets of the pill company owners quite well, and cash is a good substitute for other shortcomings -- so the pill did work sort of.
