Are you shredding your DVD library more than once?

for the people who an Apple TV + iPod + iPhone, are you shredding your DVD library more than once?

once for a high quality, large screen format, and once again for a lower quality, small screen format for the iPod/iPhone?

it seems laborious to do this 2x. i was wondering if somebody had a better idea how to do this. thanks.

The best way is probably to use Mac the Ripper to rip the DVD to a hard drive, then use Handbrake to convert it into your various formats onto a different drive. That way you aren't burning out your DVD drive and a two hard drive set up will allow them to be more efficient as well.

i haven't ripped any dvds but I have been converting existing movies and tv shows from divx to mp4.

I use mpegstreamclip to convert the files to mp4. I keep the the aspect ratio and try to encode in the same bitrate for video but I downscale the audio to 128kb. I use this version for my iphone.

To create an ATV version I take the same file and use QT to scale the videos upwards. Usually around 1280x780 or something similar. I do an Export to MP4 with the passthrough options enabled. I sync these ones to the ATV.

It's not perfect but it saves me from having to do two conversions. I used to do very speedy ipod video conversions with videora's Ipod converter. but these look horrible on the atv so I take the middle ground with mpegstreamclip to get a file that looks good on both platforms.

Not being weird but why? Surely keeping the res the same as the original will make no difference to the look of the output from your tv...

Its for aesthetic reasons. I don't like the "bars" that appear on either side of the video on certain clips. I'd rather have the movie fill as much of the entire screen as possible. It just looks better.

Exporting is also fairly quick and the file size stays about the same.

theres a difference between widescreen videos and videos that dont fill the TV screen. im concerned about the latter.

I think he's referring to the difference between widescreen and CinemaScope (16:9 and 2.4:1, respectively).
