Minolta PagePro 6ex, connected to a Linux server using CUPS.
Still have to find out how to coerce OS X into printing directly to it... Currently, I have to do the save as pdf - scp to server - lpr file.pdf procedure.

Yeah, the only way I can print to my HP 710C on a Windows machine is to save to PDF and transfer over the network then print. I'm hoping that the Samba printing support in Panther is going to make this a lot easier. I've tried Gimp Print but didn't have much luck with it, but I'm hoping that Apple's solution will be much more elegant and work straight off.

It's now some years old, but it's still top notch if you want very high quality photo prints.

If your linux server is using CUPS to print you should be able to use OS X directly as that uses CUPS as well. Are you using the Gimp-Print drivers?

No, haven't tried Gimp-Print yet. Can you point me to some good instructions to help me set it up?

There's a web page here (http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/MacOSX.php3) and there's a FAQ there as well. There's also instruction in the gimp-print installer package on how to set up your printer.

Worst printer ever:
I got the epson guy to tell me 'oh you have the $2 printer?'
Epson Stylus C42UX. The 'UX' part means is a POS.
First I needed to install Gimp-Print because epson drivers didn't allow you to select 'speed' or 'quality' and if you did it would say the printer isn't attached, if you move it back to normal settings, it prints fine.

a networked Kyocera FS-1000
Brilliant printer. Extremely cheap to run. Installed Gimp-Print on Mac OS X machines in the house to print to it and it is just as good as printing to it from a PC.
I also have an HP DJ-5550 on my desk next to my 17" iMac. Very good colour printer, great photo output, but a bit expensive to run!

I have an Epson Stylus C42UX, and it's not the best printer in the world, but I think it works just fine for printing the occasional word-processor document. I really haven't printed that many color graphics with it though.

This sounds pretty familiar...
HP 4MP for text/b&w stuff/camera-ready, and an HP 1220CxiPS for color.
the 4MP is getting old, but still holds it's own, and the color gets nice reproduction relatively quickly and cheaply, and will print 13x19 SuperB paper when needed...
I have an HP 2110 all in one at home that works very nicely and quietly - it replaced the HP Photosmart 1225 that ate itself about 2 weeks after the warranty expired. :(

I've got a 740i too, but I've always had trouble with non-Epson ink clogging up the printer. I might try this site you gave though if you recommend it. Hey, it's only $39.

On Sunday, I got an Epson Stylus CX5200 all-in-one.
I've never had my own laser printer but had several InkJets since 1988, along with a daisy wheel, a dot matrix, and a thermal ribbon colour printer from the early and mid 1980s.

My printer is an HP Deskjet 960c. It is a pretty good printer. I mostly got it because it was on sale. It makes acceptable prints for is not exactly being a photo printer. If I want really good ones. though, I send them off. One time is stopped working for like 3 days and I couldn't figure out what it was. But then it started agagin and everything was good.

I have one too. I think it is great, seeing as I am pressed for room. And it prints very nicely too. Do you like yours? The only thing that doesn't work for me is the one touch scan button, but the other one-touch buttons do work.

How is your 1220 doing under OSX? I was able to use mine with an HP print server under 9 great. It has given me nothing but problems under 10 - not being able to print at all. I have even given up on the print server and tried direct connect via usb. The printer is recognized but print jobs start, then stop. I click start and they stop a few seconds later. Doesn't matter if it is a graphic, text doc, etc. nothing works.

I've got an Apple Laserwriter 16/600 networked between my G4 tower, an ibook, powerbook, athlon, celeron, and 2 PII's. The thing is a beast, built like a tank and I love it. I got it for free from some place that was gunna throw it out. It only had 10,000 pages printed, Thats pretty much brand new for a printer thats supposed to have a 450,000 page life.

Just a note that my magenta ink just stooped working... but i have been using this printer with the inkforart ink since day one. And i sadly i use it for design work, so i use the hell out of it. I think after 4 years of abuse, it is probably time to get a new one.
Sometimes they have sales where you can get 2 six packs of ink for $39 6 color and 6 black

No printer now (my Lexmark died over Christmas) but I'm saving for a Epson Photo 2200, so I can finally get some good prints of my photographs. Mmm, that's a lovely printer.

I too had a 1220 hooked to a JetDirect300x print server, and like you it worked under 9 but problematic under X. I no longer have the 1220, in now have a HP CP1700 (think 1220, but separate inks, no tri-color), works great.

An HP DeskWriter 550c.
I wish the graphics quality was a little better. I'm hoping to get a new printer soon so I have a USB printer I can use with my Mac or my PC.

I'm quite impressed and happy with it. My UMAX SCSI scanner does not work in Mac OS X so I'm happy to not have to re-boot anymore. It also helps me move all of the SCSI equipment into another room, creating room of its own. :)
I haven't tried the buttons except for doing standalone copies, so I didn't think about the scan button working or not.
My parents have a Lexmark X83 which is quite nice but I thought it nice that there was Epson software on a CD-ROM for Macintosh as well as Windows, unlike the Lexmark.

It looks like you don't print too often, even for caual 'oh damn I NEED THIS TO PRINT RIGHT NOW' it sucks, pages per minute/.3
No joke on normal setting.
My 7401 is better, which doesn't have Os X support.

A laser - and I couldn't live with anything else.
Inkjets are ink hogs - and ink is expensive.
Toner is expensive too, but I only get new toner every 8 months or so.
And my samsung ML1210 was only $130. So lasers are also getting affordable. If you don't really need color prints get a laser - and if you need color prints get a color laser ;). If you can't afford a color laser then waste your money on ink cartriges every couple months.

I gots me a genuine Apple LaserWriter II NTX. I bought it from a computer junk sale at my old University back around 1995 for $50, and it still works.
There's also a Lexmark Z23 that I got from a garage sale for $15 - talked them down $5 because there wasn't a USB cable. Little did I know at the time that they didn't come with USB cables :) It had a practically full color cart, too - a few test pages, and it was good to go. But back to the primary text printer...
I've got the NTX plugged into an Asante EtherPrint box, so any machine on my network can print to it - the kid's iMac, my SE/30 terminal upstairs, my Newton (though I haven't tried it over wireless yet), my beige G3 with the g4/400 upgrade - well, that won't print in OSX, but that's okay, because I hardly ever use OSX on it anyway; too damned slow.
