Every once in a while the TV execs screw one up big time. Like can anyone explain why M.A.S.H. was on the air for so long? Never thought it was terrribly impressive...
Anyway, I think one of the greatest shows that never had a chance was "SportsNight". It was about a bunch of people working on a TV sports magazine like Sportscenter. It was really well-written and well-acted, but ultimately ABC gave it the axe because there wasn't a laugh track.... I don't think the average audience was able to keep up.
If you want to check it out, it's on super-late on Comedy Central.

2 shows with kevin nealon...
the first was:
"champs" (1996)- a show about a bunch of high school basketball teammates and their coach.... once they're grown up... ie, they're all still friends and live near each other and stuff... nealon was the highlight, but it was funny beyond him...
and not as good as champs was:
"hiller and diller" (1997)- nealon and richard lewis were two parents... typical sitcom, but kevin nealon is awesome, so i'm partial to it. ;)
i know there are a few others... i would have liked to see some more of michael richards' show, not because it was good, because i didn't see it, but because timmy meadows was on it and you can never have too much timmy meadows...
seinfeld didn't really get "cancelled".... it was more like cheers...

I thought futurama has not been officially cancelled. I heard that it was put on the shelf until further notice, but not cancelled. Anyway, my picks are as follows.
G-1 Transformers
Kids in the Hall
Married with children
Mr. Anderson

Futurama had potential, it just didn't quite make it.
Greg the Bunny was fantastic - but the network didn't want something so cerebral as a puppet with a show that dealt with issues.....

Married with Children
The show with the bunny and the "Hit the road Jack theme song." I can't believe I don't remember the name!!! I used to watch it alot though.
I love lucy was great. It is still syndicated, so I watch it alot.
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers ( I think now it's like Power rangers in a galaxy?)
Well that is my list. I miss these shows, even though two of them are in syndication, and the other has a predecessor.

Seinfeld didn't get cancelled. Jerry and the producers decided they wanted to end the show while it was still good, and not drag it out until nobody's watching any more (ie. M*A*S*H, All In The Family, etc.). If NBC had its way, that show would still be on the air (ie. Friends).
My vote goes to HBO's "Mr. Show with Bob and David." The third season is coming out on DVD in mid-August.

Futurama, indeed. It had even more potential than The Simpsons and has been great. That's definitely the show I miss most.
Another one on my list is Special Unit 2. This one started here in Germany just some weeks ago and I like it very much, but as they only made one season, it will be over soon...:(

Yeah I totally agree, Heres an interesting side note; the 11:30 EST showign on Cartoon Network averages 1million viewers per night and beats leno and letterman in th 18-34 demo. Also they are planning on show the very controversial (i've seen it) 50th episode that basically makes jew jokes the whole time but it is quite funny.
I loved seinfeld but i don't think it counts as cancelled because the network didn't shut it down, seinfeld himself did. Shows that simply run their course shouldn't be counted as cancelled

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers ( I think now it's like Power rangers in a galaxy?)
You are thinking of "Unhapply Ever After" The first good WB series.
The MMPR, have been so screwed up over the years now they ar like Ninjas on ABC Saturdays (I think the name is Ninja Force) (I have cousins who watch and talk about it all the time... same for Pokemon)
Also.....
FUTURAMA is not cancelled, it is going to be a summer show, plus several of the vocal actors have had health problems/other projects (Katy Segal is currently busy with 8 Simple Rules...)
I miss SportsNight (On CSC), Also Nash Bridges was cancelled after an intense Season Finale. The Family Guy was on the wrong network (I know it IS Fox, but still), It should have been on NBC or WB. Greg the Bunny was great, but trying to steal from loyal audences from Star Trek and The West Wing, if it was on Monday or Saturday it would have been great. Don't Forget "God, the Devil, and Bob" The best look at the truth about religion in years, cancelled becaue it was realistic (Similar to the stories of Job). Also from the UK - The Thin Blue Line, Great show, funny as all 'el'. The New Twilight Zone is over, they are also trying to compete againts Raitings Giants, it should be on Fridays, but its too late now.
I'd like to also see ABC rerun Monk episodes again, there are a lot of people who don't have Cable, or can't get USA, and are missing out on great programs like Monk and The Dead Zone.

While I agree that Sports Night was a great show and that a lot of quality shows never get a chance on the major networks, I COMPLETELY disagree about M.A.S.H. I think M.A.S.H. is one of the great TV shows of all time.
But to answer you question these are the shows I think should have been on the air FAR longer than they were (in a very specific order):
1. Family Guy
2. Futurama
3. Andy Richter Controls the Universe
4. Sports Night
5. Strangers With Candy

The Invisible Man (The one with the gland and the "Fish and Game" Department)
Early Edition is the one with the cat and the newspaper, its got a little strange near the end, but could have been fixed.
The Hughley's... excellent sitcom, great acting, and good plots.
Andy Richter Controls the Universe, if Fox doesn't want it, it should be on Comedy Central... it would work.

Most recent pick would have to be Invader ZIM: real potential there, among the randomness that so irritates me on a personal scale. Flashes of sheer brilliance. *sigh* I miss the cupcake too. :(
I dunno about Farscape....I'm watching the first season's DVD box with the neighbors and it just hasn't really roped me in yet. Not like B-5 did, anyway.

I just remembered Dark Angel.... It was a great pesimist's view of the future. Also seemed very Seattle-ish, when I was away from home it reminded me why I didn't like being in Seattle for too long... most of the stuff going on in the Show parallel's events in the city. And Jam Pony seems almost too much like UPS (Founded in Seattle - So was Airborne Express, long story) The Best thing was the last episode. Also I remember the use of many Macs because of their magnetic Shielding along with the Aztek that Logan had... made me want to buy one. Just too bad they never used the names of real places in the area. Like Sedro Island is actuall Whidbey Island (My Home)... and seveal other inaccuracites... other that that is was a great show.

YES! Someone else who remembers! I was getting worried.
Yeah, that was on the heels of TRON - in fact, the cosume effects guy was the same one who did the glowing circuit effect for TRON.
The car, the helicopter, that incredible-looking plane, and the perverted cursor that 'drew' it all.
I caught a few epps on SciFi a little while ago, yeah, from my adult, new millenium mind, it was hokey as heck, but to a ten-year-old, that was the shizzle (did I just say that?!?)

1. Sports Night
2. Andy Richter Controls the Universe
Andy Richter was a lot like the show 'Scrubs', and yet its still on. Screwy.
I remember a show that was called "Its All Relative" or something similar, where there was a black father, a white mother, and a chinese son, a black son, a black daughter, a latino son, and a few other kids. They just played their stereotypes. So the chinese son was obviously brainy and good at math and computers (and probably kungfu as well), while the black son was good at basketball, and the black daughter was probably pregnant or something stupid.
The show lasted 1 episode, and probably got cancelled mid-show. :p

BTW, my heritage includes English, Irish, Scottish, and German and one of my grandparents was Jewish. So, with all of the cheap/hard-drinking/cold-hearted-efficiency/bad-cooking/good-with-money jokes out there, I could choose between being:
a) Hyper sensitive and really pissed at everyone all of the time.
b) Oblivious. I just ignore it.

My point is that comedy of this form has become less an anomoly and more the norm in recent years. And most people think this is a good thing. It breaks down racial/societal barriers. By pointing out our differences in humorous ways, it actually serves to celebrate the different races and ethnicities and expose the truly racist people out there as the jokes they are.
But you are free to hold your opinions. Unless...
It's good to know you're here to tell me how I should think. Remind me to check in with you before I have another opinion.
The opinion you formed of Kwyjibo was based off of a single statement in a single post. IOW: based off of a single statement, you accused Kwyjibo of feeling racial "superior" to jews. That is no small charge, especially based off of so little information.
When people are so reactive and sensitive to such a statement, I generally think they are being ridiculous. Here, I thought you totally over reacted, so I called you out. I'm free to my opinion too, right?
Well, if I had my way, you'd be off your PC high horse and talking about the subject of the thread, not smearing Kwyjibo. That is my opinion.

I've never had issue with anything your mentioned before, but this stuck me. You are correct, noone has the right to tell you what to think, but that's not what happened. You were asked to be careful what you say.
Yes, in the US we have the right to free speech, but that comes with the responsibility of saying it - and possible repurcussions that follow it. One cannot say something incitive, then claim innocence of the firestorm that it causes.
I'm not saying what Kwyjibo said was non-offensive, but it was clearly his opinion, and not trying to oppress yours.
Taft was simply asking you to cut him a break - at the base level, comedy is victimization for the enjoyment of an audience. Anyone can take offense.

I don't think it has anything to do with anti-semitism.
There are a lot of Jewish people out there who make a living by poking fun at their own heritage and culture. Just like there are a lot of black people who make a living doing the same thing ("Didja ever notice that white guys walk like this....while black guys walk like this").
Now you could argue on both sides about wether this behavior is damaging to the respective cultures or if it actually makes things better. But I am firmly on the side of it makes things better. I think people like Dave Chappel, Jon Stewart, Chris Rock and July Gold are unbelievably funny comedians. Sure, they are unbelievably irreverant, but they all poke fun at their own heritage and their ethnicity's place in society and people respect and like them for that.
Have you ever seen an audience doubled over laughing at a Chris Rock show? Notice how it isn't just black people laughing? Or just white people? Thats the sight of people looking at each others differences and not going "ewwww" or "they are different from me, thats weird!", but rather just having fun and enjoying themselves. They are celebrating the differences.
And sometimes these comedians do touch on serious isssues and problems with race/ethnicity. But I think the effect is, in the end, positive.
Have all of you guys seen South Park? One of the two main writers for the show is Jewish. I don't think there is a show with more anti-jewish statements in it (mostly from Cartman). But that doesn't mean the show is supporting anti-semitism. Kyle is generally at ar with Cartman and in the end Cartman looks like the evil, morally lacking, racist that he is, and Kyles life goes on as normal. I think the message of the show is: just let things go already.
I can come up with about a million situations on TV where a racially "insensitive" comment is made, and where that comment isn't really promoting racism.
And none of this is to suggest that anti-semitism or racism doesn't exist. I'm just saying that in terms of the content of media, insensitive comments are often used in situations that are anything but racist.

KITH did 6 full seasons for HBO. ( i think there was at least one that was just CBC) They called it a quits after season 6 because no one in the group (but for Mark McKinney) wanted to keep doing sketch. Bruce McCulloch went on to do a couple comedy albums, McKinney went to SNL, Thompson did solo comedy stuff, Foley did News Radio and some movies, and Kevin McDonald did a couple of movies, too. From what i heard, Brain Candy was a rough time for the group, as no one saw eye to eye anymore.
I caught their last tour in NYC and got to chat with Dave Foley and mark McKinney afterwards. They were both very generous with their time.

Futurama was cancelled a while back. The reason why you're seeing new episodes right now is because Fox is finally getting around to showing the episodes they delayed over the past two years. Check the alt.tv.futurama newsgroup if you want the details. I get the sense that Fox was willing to let Futurama die off because they did not control it as they do the Simpsons (Groening had more negotiating power when he created Futurama and kept more creative and economic control over the show, much to the chagrin of Fox execs.).
The shows I miss:
1. Futurama
2. Duckman (surprised no one else mentioned this, it was brillant)
3. Family Guy
4. Married With Children (though it was dying down, Fox should have had the class to let it go out with a bang. It was after all their first show ever, and their only hit for a long time. Shame cast members found out that the show was cancelled from radio/media sources and they never got to do a finale.)

1. Futurama (watch it every night on Cartoon Network and am anxiously awaiting the second season DVD)
2. Kids in the Hall (my pen! you've got my pen!)
3. News Radio (It did go down after Phil died, but still a hilarious show)
4. Dream On (anyone else remember this one? WHY hasn't HBO released this on DVD? )
5. Hardcore TV (Another HBO gem that will probably never be seen again....favorite lines "It's a belt! and "I stopped stuttering" If you've seen the show, you get the joke. This guy (http://www.davekonig.com) was the host.)

I think it's funny that you're arguing over an episode you obviously haven't seen.
I have seen "Once Upon a Weinstein", the Family Guy episode in question. The father does make some inappropriate comments, but that's the point. He's obviously made fun of for being an idiot. It makes fun of racism, and in the end he learns that stereotypes, negative AND positive are wrong. That racism in any form isn't just bad, it's stupid.
Mostly it makes fun of him, and makes fun of the fact that he thinks his new Jewish friend is a stereotypical Jew. It was actually pretty funny. To cry racism lessens the meaning of the term. Over sensitivity makes it harder to take someone seriously when it's really happening (:cough: crying wolf).
BTW, I'm half Jewish.

In my opinion, Fox could have aired this episode and gotten away with it. The message of the show is not an anti-semetic one. But then again, if you had seen the episode, you wouldn't have called it that. But it's okay, we know you meant well, and that's cool. No hard feelings, racism is bad. And making fun of Jews is only funny sometimes, like when that guy on Seinfeld converted to Judism just to make the jokes.

Starblazers. The first anime cartoon. It was a great series.
The pretender was also pretty good.
Another one that was good was a sci-fi one (I don't remember the name). It had to do with earth fighting some creatures from outerspace, whom just so happened to emigrate from earth some 800,000 years ago. There were also human looking robots involved. It was pretty good, but you had to watch it every week in order to follow it.

Battlestar Galactica
One of the networks (I don't remember which) had an immensely innovative science-fiction series called Now and Again, about this guy who was almost killed but was rebuilt by the government with spare parts. He ws prohibited from seeing his family and ventured around with the doctor in charge of the project. They cancelled it after only one season though. It wasn't at all popular, I don't think, and I didn't really like the name, but it was a cool show.

i didnt read through the whole thread. but it seems that every now and then a good series pops up on the sci-fi channel, and it always seems to get canned. examples of good shows there:
Mystery Science Theater 3000 [hilarious!]
Sliders [ i didnt see any mention of this show, but it was pretty damn good, with an interesting concept/plot]
Farscape [this show was awesome, i followed it a bit early on, but the lack of full cable for a while, and it being in a strange time-slot stopped me from being able to watch it, though i had a friend who followed the whole series, and i still liked what i saw. but this is one of those shows thats hard to follow if you dont watch every episode]
The Invisible Man [given that its concept seems cliche at first, i thought this show pulled it off quite well]
other good shows were:
Family Guy
Futurama
Sealab 2020
etc..
i LOVE adult swim on cartoon net, minus the late night anime stuff tho: its hard for me to get into that stuff, mainly cause theres so many different types and the animation is usually sub-par.
and yeah, wtf is up with friends?! someone needs to put an end to that show. i mean, it shows that theyre running out of ideas. it just seems like a bunch of married/pregnant people trying to hold on to their single lives... does that make any sense to anyone?:p

Yeah, it was a lot of fun. We had a tough time, starting with Fox who dropped the show before we even aired. UPN picked it up and allowed us to do 13 episodes. They aired them all (a couple got a couple airings) and then decided it just wasn't getting the ratings to make up for the $1million per episode cost. They did show them on Comedy Central for a while (still can get clips on their site).
I doubt that it'll ever come back. The creators/executive producers/head writers have moved on and created the Jamie Kennedy Experiment. You get a good idea of the minds I got to work with from that show!

It's really a shame. That show is definitely head and shoulders above most of the stuff that's on tv right now. the writing was clever, and there were a lot of subtle things that gave you an impression of just how much work must have gone into making it as a great a show as it was.

Actually, Mr. T never said "I pity the fool" on the A-Team. That's from Rocky III, in which Mr. T played Rocky's opponent Clubber Lane. The full quote, referring to Rocky, is, "I don't hate Balboa, I pity the fool."
Incidentally, Mr. T used to be Sylvester Stallone's bodyguard. Before that, he worked as a bouncer.
Fine then, Mr. Smarty, then you might want to know it was Clubber LANG, not Lane. ;)
(This was a joke, only a joke. In the event of a real put down, instructions would have been given on how to beat the ever-lovin' crap out of me. Once again, it is only a joke.)

Crazy Murdock also played a recurring role on Star Trek: TNG as Lt. Barclay. Among other things, he had a fear of the transporter.
In fact, I think Lt. Barclay was more fun than any of the regular cast of TNG :)

Any Australians here. Full Frontal was a bloody good show mate. The Games was good but didn't quite beat Full Frontal.

Not only is SportsNight the best cancelled show it is one of the best show period. Not sure if anyone mentioned yet but they sell the entire sieres on DVD for $25 bucks at Target. Great Buy.

Yes I must second that, and it had quite a large fan base too.
Family Guy
Futurama
Mystery Science Theatre 3000
Seinfied (they could have made a better ending atleast)
The first 3 shows they never should have ended, ever.
