Just by looking at reviews, i think i may go for the Audio Technica ATH-M50. The reviews are outstanding, does anyone have any experience with these headphones?
I have these, k701s, and Senn hd580s. My favs are the k701s, but I use them with a Heed Canamp and I am not sure how they will sound with the amp you mentioned. I don't like them as much with some of the other amps I own.
The ATH M50s sound good even without an amp and blocks out a lot of external sound, so they get a lot of use. The aren't as accurate or as open sounding as the k701s, but I still like them a lot.
My last choice of the group would be the Senns, but I like the ear pads a bit better than the pleather on the m50s, so they are more comfortable for long periods.
AKG also makes the Ad700 which have a huge soundstage but the bass suffers because of it. They are huge, but are very comfortable. They have a similar sound to the k701s (although they are not as accurate), but are a lot less expensive. They aren't as power hungry as the k701s, so they are a bit more flexible if you are on a budget. I use mine with a Little Dot MKIII amp that gives the bass a bit more presence.
Personally, if I needed a good all arounder on a budget, I would get the M50s.

Thanks for your help, i think i am going to go with the Audio Technica headphones. the reviews are just astounding and it appears as if you are happy with yours as well. Do you think it would be worth getting a small amp to pair them with such as the FiiO E5? Apparently that amp just tightens them slightly and the Amp is only like another $25.

Lacking in bass and with an annoying treble peak, they still sound pretty good, especially if you love articulate tape hiss. Dubstep sounds like needles in the ears (then again, didn't it already?). It's pretty cool that they sound equally good ridiculously loud and ridiculously quiet.
The real magic is in the γ2 DAC, through which even lowly Grado SR80s (and my beloved triplefi 10s) sound good.

Well, the left earpiece on my UM3X broke...I think the wiring on the inside is loose or something because whenever I move it I get staticy noises.
But that just gave me a reason to upgrade! :D
Bought these today! And at a decently lower price than it should have been...especially in Canada.

I do like them but I've read if you get an amp for them the bass would improve. Using it on my iPod, the bass isn't that good but when I connect my iPod to my amp and use the M50s it is much better.

I was reading about whether or not 'burn in' is a fact or myth, there seems to be a bit of a debate whether or not it's real. Either way, looking forward to hear if they actually do improve, or if it's just me becoming very accustomed to the headphone's sound.
JayMysterio: You now have headphones that kill the beats (all of them) and for a fraction of the price. congrats.
Actually what I believe is I have headphones that I would have NOT gotten without getting my first set of Beats. I think nowadays with days of hi fidelity stereo speciality shops gone, it's headphones like Beats, more expensive SkullCandy, Sony's & Sennheiser's are gateways to higher end headphone's if one chooses to.
Thanks. Looking forward to quite a bit of time with them, and already loving them.

skullcandy fix ($69)
look them up, easily the most innovative earphones as far as how they go in your ear and how they stay. perfect for active stuff
skullcandy heavy medals ($89)
the most amazing earbuds i've ever heard. 13.5mm drivers, bass is insane, includes foam tips and full remote
monster dre beats pro ($399)
biggest but best splurge i've made. i had the beats studios before them, and these are a world of difference for $100 more. zero sound leak outside of them at full blast. bass is so loud, yet so clear. dual inputs let you listen to 2 songs at the same time automatically mixed into both ears (super fun to play with), and all metal so super durable

I like them a lot. It takes getting used to the oddness of their loop design inside your ear. Other than that, they don't disappoint in sound.

Yes, surprisingly good actually. Very comfortable and well built. Incase had a 40% off code on Facebook not long ago which worked on all of their products.

Yes, they are! The bass is amazing.
They are £199.00 in the UK so they are expensive.

I own every pair of Monster Beats except the top of the line ones, But I just ordered the sennheiser hd 598's. I bought those beats because I heard from fellow soldiers they were great, but since I have been a member on this forum and had my mac, everyone seems to lean towards the more professional Sen's. I do love deep bass, but prefer a clear sound over anything. So I will give them a try and re-post my own picture when they get here.
http://img155.imageshack.us/img155/7129/img2437y.jpg
If anyone cares to PM me about the quality or has tested these for themselves compared to the Beats by Dre I would greatly appreciate it. I can't wait until they get here to try them myself. They look SOOOO much more comfortable and lighter.

my main headphones:
http://www.productwiki.com/upload/images/sennheiser_hd_203.png
Sennheiser HD203's. Great bass and super clear.
my old headphones:
http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q113/mapletoy/headphone/pioneer/SE-2/2.jpg
Pioneer SE2's. Really old, but really clear sound. They have to be adapted down from a 1/4" plug
my portable headphones:
http://images.izideal.com/img/product/12947033/l/uk/sony-mdr-ex10-in-ear-headphones-black.jpeg
Sony MDR-EX10's. I picked them up because they were cheap and I torture my portable buds. The sound is fairly decent, though.

I decided I will try them from amazon and just use the cord that came with my Beats that is a normal 3.5mm. If I don't like them, I'll just return them no big deal. But I hope I do, they LOOK amazing so I expect the same from the sound and feel.

Today I got my pair of Sennheiser HD 598's. I bought these to compare to the Beats Studio's I have. I also received a FiiO E10 to crank up the power just a little bit more. I will be writing a review of them here shortly and comparing the two brands, but overall so far after back and forth from both, I am not impressed with the Sen's. Look and feel is about all they have going for them.

i've always had relatively cheap headphones -- probably never exceeding $30. prior to this i've had lower end computers as well, but since i've finally splurged and got my mac... i've felt it not unreasonable to also get some higher quality speakers, headphones, etc. i just ordered these the other day. anyone have any experience with them, or similar ones? or thoughts or opinions?

also, i really enjoy these aesthetically (which certainly isn't top priority for me)... but i simply couldn't spend that much.

I am trying out the Bowers & Wilkins P5's today. I've not had a good set of headphones in a while, and my recent airplane trip emphasized how much I hate airplane noise.
Luckily I am still ~5 min from an Apple store.
The demo units sounded bass heavy, and the ones I bought are tuned the same.
I know that sound in this area is subjective, but does anyone else think the same? I don't listen to bass-heavy stuff, mainly rock/alternative/comedy/some top40.
I can play with the eq, I know, but I don't want to always be making adjustments. Anyone else feel the same way?

Let it burn in for awhile, the sound balances more after some burn in. I am definitely not a bass head, but I don't think the P5's overly exaggerate the bass. But your taste might want something even more neutral. Plus 1 for using my picture! haha

I know I'm going to piss a lot of people off saying this, but I wouldn't be surprised if most of the mass produced "premium" headphones in this thread were grossly overpriced and subtly marketed to make people feel "special". XD
In reality, yea I'm pretty sure that it's possible to make a fake pair of beats that sound every bit as good as the real thing (and if you like lots of bass, they're just fine). Put it this way, using beats headphones is like taking pictures with Instagram, or using those tube amps. It's not the truth, but some people like the modifications such things pose. In the form of tube amps, it produces a "softer" sound, and in the form of beats headphones.. more bass!!
I'm also pretty sure you could knock off the speaker/airflow qualities of say, a nice pair of Grado cans, and sell them for about 1/4 as much. People here probably wouldn't buy them XD

Let it burn in for awhile, the sound balances more after some burn in. I am definitely not a bass head, but I don't think the P5's overly exaggerate the bass. But your taste might want something even more neutral. Plus 1 for using my picture! haha
I thought the demo units in the store were over compensating the low end as well. I will admit, the demo units did sound a lot better, but I didn't think I would be happy with them in the long run with such an expensive pair. I assume they have been used enough to have a decent burn in.
I did end up picking up the incase sonic to try out using the 45% off code at goincase.com (it is now expired). I wasn't able to try them out anywhere, but at that price, if I don't like them, I am sure I can resell

Most headphones in stores connected to their own source are EQ'd pretty heavily.

Truth is Beats are better than many run of the mill headphones, but compared to the big guns out there, or even other headphones at Apple, they lack. I suppose they look alright (not a fan, to gaudy imo.) If someone likes their Beats, then more power to them, its more than likely higher quality than what they had previously, and if they love listening to music, they will inevitably upgrade from their Beats after they crack :P.

Disclaimer: I am by no means an audiophile.
On-the-go and general use: Bose IE2: These sold me because of the unique bud design. I've had them for a little over a year now and have been very pleased with both the fit and the sound quality.

Travel: Bose QC-15. I just got these and flip flopped between them and the comparable Sennheiser pair. I ended up going with the Bose because their noise cancellation was leaps and bounds above the Sennheisers; I mainly plan to use these on the train or on the plane, so that's pretty important.

Home use: Sony MVR-150. My oldest pair, but they sound great. I'm thinking of retiring them and picking up a set of Sennheisers to replace them. Any recommendations?

Depends on what you listen to. I'd personally recommend either the HD280 Pro or the HD558/HD598. All are easy to drive, and sound really good.

I agree. I have a FiiO amp and used to own ALL the beats, but sold them (earbuds, on ear, over ear noise canceling) for a pair of ATH-M50''s and Sennheisers HD598's. I heard the Audio Technica's before buying and was sold instantly. even without an amp. But the quality of these headphones vs. beats is a whole different level. Beats are overpriced pieces of flare, and the noise canceling is horrible with a hum to it.

No. Maybe add a tad more bass. Shoot for the Fiio E11 if anything. Plus, it helps (but it can be a con) to upgrade the format of your music to a lossless codec such as FLAC or Apple Lossless.

Get coiled. Everyone I know who has them got the coiled because it's wayyy shorter. It's the ideal length IMO. Not too long, and not too short :)
EDIT: Plus, you can alway stretch it out if you need to.

People may think that they're a waste of money, as you can get a significantly better sounding pair for the same price (or a pair that sounds the same for a significantly lower price). People may also think that they are bought purely for the fact that they're popular or look good (the second one is a fine reason to pick headphones, IMO).

I have never owned a pair or beats so I cannot compare the two, but I do really like my Reflexes so far. They are comfortable (Though i've never worn them for more than 20 minutes at a time) and sound great to my un-trained ears. The deciding factor for me was, at 50% off, what do I have to lose?

I've worn just about every brand of headphones as part of my living for over 30 years in both broadcasting and in the recording industry and I do not believe the "Beats" brand is a "gimmick"...I get some don't like the sound and others think they are overpriced and they have every right to say so , but the guys behind the design of these phones have very solid reputations in the business of sound reproduction...Jimmy Iovine especially as one of the top recording engineers in the history of the music business (John Lennon, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty and U2). I personally like them for what they are, very good portable headphones for digital music players. I just purchased the "Beats Wireless" headphones as I have a need for my headphones to be cordless and I find them just perfect for my needs. I'm over 50 years old so I couldn't give a crap about how they look or what kind of status symbol it portrays that seems to bother others (I also have the B&W P5's, Shure E5's and yes, even Bose QC3's for traveling and I enjoy them all)...they are well built, sound great for bluetooth technology and are very comfortable...
Now, are they for everybody? No. Are they for Audiophiles? No. Are they expensive? Yes, but referring to people as "senseless" because they like the brand seems a bit harsh to me...

i got mine from this seller (authorized Audio Tech dealer) on ebay: http://myworld.ebay.com/proaudiomart/
it was a few years ago and they were in fact $100 then. they offer very good SQ for the money, but it seems the street price has gone up significantly since they have gotten so popular and have favorable reviews out there.
proaudiomart is still selling them and they have the best offer option so i would suggest offering a little lower and seeing what they will take. gl.

Hey I figured since this post was about headphones i'd ask here. I am looking for a new pair of over ear headphones from between $100-200. Preferably something open ear (I like to listen to a lot of hip hop and i hear open ear has better bass for that) but something still very accurate. I currently own a pair of Bose Q15's and Beats Studio (hate the overwhelming bass). I'm planning on giving the Q15's to my dad and the Beats to my friend, I just wasn't a fan of the Beats and I don't really like the Bose either, can't explain it. So i'm mostly living with a pair of Klipsch S4i earbuds which I love to death. But I want something over ear for a better soundstage and better overall quality.
Any recommendations would be appreciated.

I would highly recommend the Denon line of headphones. The D2000's are amazingly good. The closed design allows very little sound to leak out and very tight bass. The bass is definitely present and accurate, not overpowering though. They are very light around your head (at least for me) and are comfortable for hours on end.
You can find them used on some forums for around $200 usually...

I decided to buy my last pair of audiophile headphones 6 months ago, and went for the Sennheiser HD800 headphones (http://www.hifigear.co.uk/sennheiser-hd800-audiophile-quality-headphones.html) after extensive auditions at dealers and friends houses. They are so transparent and clear whilst also being comfortable.:)

I wasn't expecting too much when I bought these for work. However, when I paired them with a FiiO E10 amp/DAC I found the sound to be pretty darn good. The E10 made all the difference!

I've posted mine already, I think, but here goes: Phiaton MS400.
The overall sound quality is outstanding, and can be driven by an iPod quite easily due to the low impedence (I think it's 32 Ohms). They also have a rather "fun" sound, and it doesn't tire your ears. They're what Dre Beats would sound like if they were good. :p
Several user reviews from Head-fi (http://www.head-fi.org/products/phiaton-ms-400/reviews). I don't agree with all of the reviews, but they're there for you to read.

Some really nice headphones on this page. Unfortunately they aren't comfortable or practical for me so it's mostly IEM and earbuds personally.
Blox M2C. Nice wide soundstage for earbuds. An upgrade on the Yuin PK3 I had previously.

Yuin PK1 next in line once I decide on a portable amp.

I bought these when I was 17 years old so next year they will be 10 years. Still works like a charm. It's Philips, the rest is long forgotten.

Phiaton is still somewhat of an appearance or boutique brand in many people's eyes. It is kind of hard to break out of that. V-Moda is doing it with their M80's though.

Anyone here using Atomic Floyd Superdarts? (http://www.atomicfloyd.com/superdarts)
Also, does anyone know if the Sennheiser 439's tip would fit in the Element Vapor Pro?

Idk if I like them yet :(. They're all plastic and feel kind of cheap, lots of sound leakage, and with the volume all the way up, I still wish they were louder. Would I be any more satisfied with the 518's or the 598's? I keep comparing them to my S4i's and these don't come anywhere near them.

They're great. The only thing I have to complain about is the cord, it's way to short.

Grrrrrrrrrados. SR-80s or SR-125s, depending on the price (which I can't remember, but it's definitely in that ballpark).

Ultrasone HF-580 if you still want the mid-bassy beats signature.
Interesting.

Yes, its planar magnetic drivers allowed for better instrument separation and an amazingly deep extending bass for open headphones. HD650 can't really boast that. HD650 still has a smoother midrange however.
