Some of the most comfortable and best sounding earphones I've ever had. I've had quite a few different pairs of earphones, these have lasted far longer than anything else (had them for three years) and they're brilliant.

So you like these? Have you ever listened to any Shure's? I've been looking for some sound-isolating phones to take on plane flights, but I'm balking at the idea of spending the amount of money on Shures....

How do you like the Vibes? Worth the $100? How do they stack up to the Shure e3Cs?

I have not looked at them, but the thing is the Sennheiser's aren't actually "sound isolating" but rather "reducing." It still helps on plains (and pretty much everywhere really) but you will still hear a fair amount of background noise so if that's what you're looking for the Shure's may be better and it may pay to drop the cash on them. As general headphones and "sound reducing" ones specifically I like them.

Bose is definitely overpriced for what are really just mediocre cans. Haven't heard any B&O headphones but in all honesty the reports I have seen are that they are kind of like bose, however at least with B&O you get something sytlish.
Edit:
No, they are fantastic earphones, well worth the money.
What you pay for is the build quality, true materials (real leather pouch), sound and design. They're more 'all round' than other earphones I've used. Even cans costing £500 I've used don't feel as well made as these.
Bose do have a reputation of breaking very very easily. This hasn't been seen in the B&O line from the reports.

Really?, i thought that was supposedly fixed in the revised QC2 models. Actually come to think of it i have a friend whose QC2s broke twice but i guess kudos to Bose cos they kept replacing it each time, instead of blaming the consumer and refusing service.
BTW i just got back from an apple store. I tested both the QC2 and QC3 and to me the QC2 seemed to edge out in terms of sound. Felt more natural whilst the QC3 seemed not as loud and had a tad too much base. Also i had to increase my ipod volume alot more compared to the QC2
I also heard senheisers are good. I did a short test but sound IMHO wasn't that great it was definately not bad but i dunno just seemed to be lacking a bit. Also i have a small head and those things look BIG on me

Hey Nick, I'm thinking about getting the SR 125s for college. From your experience with them, would you say that you could block out some noise from the outside world without cranking the volume up too much? I understand that the cans do have sound leakage because they are open air, but how much? Sorry for so many questions. :D

They're OK, but definitely what you'd call noise isolating headphones. They tend to let in a good amount of ambient noise, so if you're looking for something to block out voices, or the TV, look at something else.

I have the Shure se310's. They sound great and i really like them for listening to Trans Siberian Orchestra type music.
I have some $30 sony's and then some 50ish dollar Shure e2c and the se310's are the best by far.
If you are looking for a nice set at around 100 i would look at the westone UM1's. Also, had over to headfi.org.

I know the Bose are overpriced for what they are, but they are the most comfortable headphones that I have ever tried. I just found someone on craigslist with a brand new pair of the OE on-ear phones in the sealed box that will sell them to me for $126 (same as the around-the-ear phones are selling for right now). The OE phones right now sell for $162. I think I will pick them up tomorrow.

Yep. That is exactly what happens when you try to turn up open headphones to very loud levels to overcome external noise - everybody else hears what you hear!

Being quite an audiophile, I listened to many other "better, more expensive" headphones, but settled on the Bose. You know what really puzzles me is when people say how terrible Bose equipment is. I own and have owned lots of Bose products and know they are incredible, so when people say they sound terrible or are cheap, I just think less of that person. But I suppose we all have our opinions and I really don't like to argue over this kind of subject.
anyway, I think I'll put on my headphones and put in Meddle, and enjoy the evening.

If i said that i was quite an audiophile as well, hence my setup, would that make my points more valid
By the same reasoning, when someone says that Bose triports are very good headphones (and they are an audiophile) i think less of them. I have listened and spent a decent amount of time with my friends bose headphones, running through a custom made cable through a Portaphile V2^2 maxed out running off batteries and therefore i have formed my own opinions on this matter. I think this is a case of agreeing to disagree. Anyway I'll go and listen to my DT880s.

Couldn't live without 'em since ten years or so! Extremely light (230 grammes) and comfortable wear. Crystal clear and pleasing sound. Impressive smooth and very well done basses.
Made for people who like to be able to hear some background noise while listening to music. Sold out and out of stock for some months now.

Kind of big and have a long cord but Good sound.
Grado sr80 they are about $100 but people on the internet say that they sound as good as like $400 headphones
you can also get the sr60 for less.

Grado's an excellent choice
I had the SR80's before i upgraded to the RS-2's, but then I "downgraded" to the SR225. The RS-2's cost nearly twice as much, but the audio quality didn't justify the price in my opinion.
I'll post some pics of my headphones later today

Have you tried the reverse mod? Back when I had the UE S.f 5's, I switched the left and right channel cables and inserted the IEM's backwards. It resulted in a fuller sound, better fit, and a slimmer profile. You should try it some time.

Do you use an amp?
I sure wish I had the time and cash to back to back test all of those headphones. I'm still leaning towards some AKG 701's ... but I'm interested in all of the ones you have.

I'm still leaning towards some AKG 701's ...
So get 'em! I have the AKG K 501 for more than ten years (description and photo above) now. They are very often and busy in use - working and sounding like at the first day. The sound is reference class in almost all genres - mine is from classical/concert hall to electronic/ambient/trance. I am using them for music and video production too. I am working at TV and radio studios and all the sound engineers have AKG's on.
They are huge (not heavy) but the system with the self-balancing leather band is genious. After 30 seconds you've forgotten that you have headphones on! No pressure at all for hours! Even if you're wearing eyeglasses. You can dance with them as far the cable reaches but don't shake your head too much. Shake other parts of the body maybe ;-)

The Sony MDR-V700's will break on you in about a year and a half or two. The swivel starts to crack, and when it does they won't last too much longer. I have two pairs, both with duct tape holding them together :) Don't get me wrong, they're great headphones, especially for DJing, but Sony really needs to make them out of a light metal so they don't break. But then I guess people wouldn't have a reason to buy new pairs...
I think Im leaning towards getting some AKG K701's for music production, but Im still not sure what brand to go with for DJing...

I read about all of those problems in various reviews online before buying them in summer '05, but I decided to get them anyway because I'm very good at taking care of electronics. I figured that if I was careful, I wouldn't have any problems , and I haven't so far (knock on wood). It's my brother who always ends up breaking things, which is why he hasn't touched my headphones:p

Funny, I say All highs; All lows; Must be blows. Too me they have no mids.
I'm in the market for some noise cancelling phones for air travel. I travel about 60% and am tired of not being able to hear a movie or turning my podcasts up to an unhealth sound with my buds. Can someone recommend something other than the overpriced bose?

That was what things were like years ago with Bose. Loads of mids, nothing else, as they used mediocre quality one-way designs, which didn't produce any lows or highs. Things are of course different now, loads of bass, loads of treble, and nothing in the middle (which is the most important frequency range).

I can now use my Bose QC3's with my iPhone with this adapter from SHURE...
The cord is extra long, and you have to get used to not hearing your own voice well while speaking, and lastly if you are in a noisy environment - you hear good because you have the noise canceling headphones on but your caller can hear all the background noise. Not ideal - but I'm glad I can use the QC3's with my iPhone!

I just bought the Sony V6 headphones (left) 2 days ago, replacing the Sony CD280 headphones (right). I think I need to get an amp for them, I find myself having to crank the volume higher than usual to enjoy what I'm listening to. On the plus side, the cups on the V6's do a better job of blocking outside noise. My Mom has been using the same model for close to 20 years. Unless I'm mistaken, I know she was using the same style of Sony headphones since the late '80s. The highs are much more pronounced, the mids are more spread out(haven't gotten used to this yet!), and the lows can easily overpower everything.
Any recommendation for earbuds that won't hurt the cartiladge that's at the lower-front part of the ear? Every pair I have ever tried always make that part of my ear very sore.

I'd probably go with the SR80's (or SR225's if you're willing to spend the $$) and the PA2V2 (http://www.electric-avenues.com/amplifiers.html).
I find the PA2V2 adds just the right amount of bass to the grado...check it out:)

I'm truly surprised that so many people here own Bose headphones.
Being on a forum dedicated to Apple, I thought people cared a lot more about quality.
Every Bose fan should read this: http://intellexual.net/bose.html
You can get much better headphones that Bose for much less money.
Like another poster, I've had these: http://www.audiocubes.com/product/Audio-Technica_ATH-A500_Art_Headphones.html for nearly 3 years now. Much more comfortable than any in the Bose line. Better sound quality than any Bose. Won't break after 6 months of use, and cost less than $100 shipped now.
Would I buy them again? I'd upgrade to the A900s ;) Infact, I plan to maybe next year unless Audio-Technica releases something better.
Bose products should be avoided like a plague. Unless they were reasonably priced. For example, the original Triports and the new Triport OE should be more around the $20-$30 range.

Ditto. But then again, being an Apple forum means that the regulars are more susceptible to fall to advertising & shiny things, & put up with equipment that suffers immensley from 'form over function' just because it's Apple.

At least where I live, Bose is pretty much the only audio company that advertise in (non tech specific) press, such as newspapers, magazines, etc. You often see their little CD systems advertised at the back of TV listings magazines proclaiming how cheap it is at 12 monthly payments of £24.99 etc. It's here that they prey on the casual listener who doesn't know anything about audio equipment - if the advert says that it's awesome high quality, they'll believe it. When they take delivery, the placebo will make them believe what they're hearing too.
Oh & Apple certainly did used 'cheap as hell' components in my MacBook - on no other laptop that I have ever owned did I have to put up with sharp, jagged, unfinished plastic, screws that have completely stripped their threads, wristwrests that aren't properly attached, a lid that isn't even straight on one side & possibly the worst RJ45 socket I have ever used (obviously not a Foxconn). MacBooks are made by Asus, hardly the most luxurious of PC builders in the world. And don't get me started on things like the Apple remote - it's a tacky, cheap piece of plastic clipped together by some kid in China, which can't have cost more than £1 to make - & how much do Apple want if you buy one separately? £19.

Being on an Apple forum has nothing to do with quality. Many Bose users oblivious to anything else beyond the bottom-drawer market believe it to be ultimate quality, and in that way many Apple users are very similar.
You can't walk around with a pair of A900's. They sound better, but they're twice the weight, isolate about half as much (if that), have a 3-meter cord and are even more fragile than the Triports. The Triports add a small mound to your ears when worn. The A900's adds a pair of Burger King Whoppers.
There's an element of practicality / usability to many people's choices, especially a truly informed one. I'm absolutely no stranger to quality headgear and I use the Triports for casual commuting, because they're practical and sound good enough for the use considering everything else.

It may be true that Bose advertisements can influence people to an extent where they think they're buying a high-end product, but I always thought Bose advertisements were simply ugly.

i currently use v-moda vibes (gunmetal) with my ipod after trying sennheiser c300, and shure e2c's. i wanted some "budget" earbuds to replace my lost 40$ pair of sony earbuds which were actually quite good despite them being cheaper sony earbuds. anyway, i stuck with the vibes after break-in of all 3 headphones and testing with the type of music i listen to most (a variety of heavier rock like reveille, deftones, sevendust, demon hunter, project86, etc; underground hiphop stuff and turntablism such as dj krush, dj shadow, dj kentaro, dilated peoples, atmosphere, aesop rock, etc; lastly downtempo like kruder & dorfmeister, thievery corporation, thunderball, etc.); i just found that the vibes held their own in the biggest departments for me.. clarity, clear highs, solid lows, and decent mids.. the c300's had THE MOST bass, while it had not so great highs and mids, the shures had decent mids but not great lows or highs (i think these --the shure e2cs-- have the best clarity for certain types of music, but not for the genres of music i listen to on a daily basis).
anyway, with all of that said, i'm really happy with mine and about the only thing i'd like to get for these are some of those foamy type plugs like you can get for the shures and etymonics and other brands.
EDIT: here is a link to the v-moda vibes: http://www.v-moda.com/collection/modaphones/vibe.aspx, i'll post a pic of mine with my ipod when i get home from work today if anyone cares.

The Apple Earbuds aren't all that bad considering they're bundled. What you'll find with most other players will sound far worse.
However, you will find a good pair of Shures will really step up massively in terms of sound quality over most other 'high quality earphones' you'll find. Other good brands include Sennheiser, Grado and Bang & Olufsen.
I rip all my music at 256, and I've found it's the best compromise. Stepping up to 320 kbps produces next to identical-to-CD sound. Stepping down to 192 kbps produces really irritating warbling and generally flattens the sound out (unlike 256, which seems very vibrant and warm in comparison).

Since I can't stand to have anything in my ears I use Sony MDR-7506's. I absolutely love them because they have about as flat a response as headphones can have. I can add any coloration by EQ'ing. The drivers will handle +12dB without distorting, great for some added bass when needed.

I too always look for flat responses in headphones. Good choice.

I have the MDR-7506s and I love them! (But the rubber on the cord has frayed and exposed the wiring with less than a year of use.)
OKay, I probably already posted one of my headphones here but I have some more.
Here is a pic of all my headphones.
See those Apple In-Ear ones? Picked them up ( brand new ) for a forth of the price they're worth. Those just don't fit in my ears, I want to wear them but they keep falling out and it annoyes me alot. Those In ears just arent anything for me , I have cursed ears. Anyway , the middle ones with the protectors are the ones I use and love. Those are a pare of Creatives EPwhatnot.
Now , I used to love those Apple headpones , the design and quality and everything. But they are malfunctioning ( I think ). There isnt much sound going trough the front ( where it should be coming from ). In fact , I get a louder sound from the back! Those 3 or 4 holes on the back. I just gave up on them because of that. I had to play my iPod on max volume to get some normal volume when in a room of people while the headphones in the middle of the picture can do that with a forth of the volume. ( or less ).
I also have a HEADPHONE a real PHONE but those are getting old, need to be replaced. ( got those with my webcam ).
I see some people here have UEs and Shure's. Well, those in-ear headphones just dont fit for me and i really hate that. Im sure they rock. How come , though? ugh

The people that swear by Bose are sadly mistaken if they think they are listening to top-end phones. For the price you pay for a pair of triports (which are built quite poorly, actually), you could get a pair of much better sounding phones from another company.
If you truly want good audio quality for a fair price, stay away from Bose. Look at Beyers, Sennheisers, etc. Trust me, I've been through many headphones, and I will never buy Bose again. If you are interested in what to purchase, head-fi.org is a great place to start.
Myself... I use Sennheiser HD580s.

Myself... I use Sennheiser HD580s.
I 2nd this. I have two pairs of these. One at home for listening pleasure and one at the studio for recording classical, jazz, and other acoustic music. Flat-ish response (nothing is flat, I don't care what anyone says), great comfort, EXCELLENT definition!
Too bad they're discontinued.

So here's a question for you (or anyone else rolling with some PortaPros): I'm about to take delivery of some Ultimate Ear Super.fi 5 Pros, but am looking for some cans that would be better suited for a home setup. I realize that the Koss is supposed to be a portable phone, but if I could get a set of them (new) for a whopping cost of $0, would it be a good "buy" for a home setup? If not, is there anything else in that price range (or up to, say, 50% more expensive) available on Amazon.com that would be better? If not, I'll probably end up with some Grados or something, but I would have to pay for those.

I made these on my own out of MDR-EX90 earbuds, and they look ugly - but are the most comfortable and BEST sounding earbuds I've heard to date. (and I've tried UE, Shure and V-Modas - even the nice ones).

50% more than $0 is $0. But yes, there is a reason why the PortaPro design hasn't changed in over 20 years - they are just that freakin' good. In any design (portable, in-ear, sealed, etc.) there is nothing in the same price range as the PortaPro that can even come close.

Grado sr80 they are about $100 but people on the internet say that they sound as good as like $400 headphones
you can also get the sr60 for less.
SR-80s are great! Enjoy them.
And if you ever get hit with upgrade-itis, don't go for the Grado RS series. Go for the SR-225's, much better value IMHO (i've owned both the SR-225's and RS-2's)

Point taken - I guess I should have explained. One of the research tools I use rewards me with points, and those points can be redeemed at a special Amazon.com store. The cost to me is $0, but the number of points required is tied in with the regular cost on Amazon. That being said, if it looks like I will be doing a lot of home listening I will either pick up the PortaPros or save up a bit for some Sennheiser HD-555 Pros.

Nobody will take Grado's place in the best headphones for IN-HOME listening. If Im not mistaken they proyect some of the sound outside and that helps with their amazing sound, now if your someplace with people I think they wouldn't want to listen to your music do they:p? I care, I don't want to look like a World War II radio operator when wearing those headphones. Also they project some of the sound OUTSIDE (that is awesome if your not surrounded by other people) and I wouldn't want someone listening to some ******* music next to me be using headphones that project sound in the vicinity (although I have my very very nice noise-canceling headphones so screw ******* music played by brats). Just to give you one example my math teacher lets me listen to music in his tests and when I listen to music I usually get better grades; I won't get distracted by outside noises and really "get into" the test. Now, if I had one of those headphones that will produce sound outside the ear-cup while in a test all my classmates and teacher will go nuts.

Only a person who has never heard how good Grado headphones are would say that. Grado are still one of the BEST headphone manufacturers out there, they don't need to make them look visually good because anyone who buys them knows they are buying quality.
And if any Audiophile out there see you wearing a set like that they know that you know a thing about audio and quality.
I have ATH-AD700 which sounds awesome while my younger brother has the Grado MS-1, seriously a good set of headphones should sound awesome and if they look cool that's a bonus.

AKG K-240 This have to be the most common headphones used in recording studios. Not hyper-expensive either. they sell for just over $100. The are "open" so they don't cancel noise well, best to use them in a quiet environment. But you'd have to spend big $$ to get htis sound quality in a close design. It is just technically harder to get good sound with cose design. Some people say it can't be done. But if you can use the open K-240 then $100 gets you close to perfect. AKG has been making these same headphone dor 30 year at least Bought my first ones in the early 1980's

These are the best all around headphones in the world. They could be a part of a geek suit, but they are cheap, comfortable, accurate, loud, and not fatiguing. I have close to a dozen pairs around the house and studio. I will post a pic when I get home. There are often several pairs hanging in the same place.
The only advice I have is that you get some gaffer's tape or black duct tape, and wrap it tightly around the bridge to prevent cracks.

You again... Now I don't want to get deaf or suffer from hearing loss but if Im listening to some good Infected Mushroom or David Guetta and I get "into" the music and blast it up then people will get mad. They are very very very good headphones designed mostly for in-home listening and are the best in their field. I enjoy good sound in a stylish package that will block out the noise outside and won't project sound; Bose gives me that in the QC2's.

I have the same. For the money they are wonderful. I may upgrade to the UE Super Fi 5's though. They have two drivers instead of one.
Do it! There's a big difference, and you'll thank yourself for it.

I've been craving those headphones for a long long time now. They are on my list of first things to buy when I win the lottery.
I suppose by the time I could afford those they will be the omega 3s or maybe the 4s. Suppose I'll have to make do with my dt880s.

Just let her listen to them and she won't mind at all. I have a hard time getting my headphones back off her.

Post all the earphones you have or using here! It can also be headphones. :D
I'll start: Vmoda vibe duo and Bose In-ear, both are nice. And the iphone earphones ive never used lol
I do have to say that my Vmodas broke twice and im on my 3rd pair. They do sound good though and the Bose have a more "rich" and full sound but they dont get loud.
Have fun!

they're the most comfortable tips that come with the e2c's, but the soft rubber tips on the 530's are definately more comfortable. iirc, the whole of the new shure range use the rubber tips:)

The headphones are SONY MDRV700 DJ studio headphones. I highly recommend them to anyone. There's a reason why they are the most popular personal studio ear monitors.

but they're currently not taking orders until new years because of high demand.
Yep, they're custom IEM's. I found a little company (growing quickly) in Florida with amazing quality products and phenomenal prices, and got in before they got too expensive and too busy. They blow any of my universal IEM's out of the water (I'm a small female, with proportionately small, female-sized ear canals). I've had (on the high end) SE530's and UE triple fi's, and it smokes all of them. I can't say enough about getting full customs, or even custom tips. I started out with custom tips from Westone... and I got hooked.

I wouldn't really recommend them. I bought these on a whim when one of my earbuds went out. I cannot deal with only one earbud working. Irks me! These were $15 at Best Buy. They have better bass than the iPod issued earbuds but the build quality is a bit cheap. I feel like if I put these in my backpocket, the wiring will rip instantaneously.

If you want bass, get the Sennheiser CX300's. I got mine for $25AUD through a few connections... but seriously, quality is pretty good, mid and high tones are great and the low tones are pretty good for the price. The bass is excellent though.

I second that! I actually have been using the MDR-V600's for about 4 years now, and they've been the best headphones I've ever owned. They look pretty ratty now, but still sound amazing!
My only complaint is that my ears don't fit in them that comfortably (they MAY be a bit on the bigger side), and so I can't have them on for over an hour without some real discomfort.
