I am doing a project at school where I am inventing a new way to do subtitles. I am going to do them in after effects.. the only problem being i need a video to test them out on... just a short clip.. high resolution... can i convert a clip from a dvd to quicktime using my superdrive? Anyone have any suggestions on another way?
Thanks
Jason

1. Rip a short title (movie trailer or something like this) or just one chapter from a DVD with 0SEx (http://www.cs.buffalo.edu/%7eafaversa/test/) (Fmt = Element streams).
2. Open the resulting mpeg2 file in Quicktime (you may need Quicktime Pro, not sure about this) + save/export as Quicktime movie.
3. The movie will have no sound, though. The sound is ripped separately from the DVD and will be a ac3 file. You can use mAC3dec (http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/14479) to convert the sound to aiff/mp3/aac.
Hope that helped.

you need to have th quicktime mpeg-2 codecs installed (im pretty sure they come with the latest version of quicktime) and then you can open the .vob files you see on the DVD. you can use software like 42 or pipeline to rip the dvd to to divx format if you want also.

MPEG-2 codecs for quicktime are separate, and cost money. $19.99 to be exact.

Also, if you don't have quicktime pro, you will need that (~$30) to re-export a video file into the quicktime format.
Sorry :( If you're going for cheap, I'd suggest a different route.
[edit: I found the more exact price off the website, I was $0.99 off. A whole iTMS song!]
