ABUJA (Reuters) - Nigerian schoolchildren who received laptops from a U.S. aid organization have used them to explore pornographic sites on the Internet, the official News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported Thursday.

NAN said its reporter had seen pornographic images stored on several of the children's laptops.

"Efforts to promote learning with laptops in a primary school in Abuja have gone awry as the pupils freely browse adult sites with explicit sexual materials," NAN said.

A representative of the One Laptop Per Child aid group was quoted as saying that the computers, part of a pilot scheme, would now be fitted with filters.

Wow, those children really are learning fast. I think it would have taken me a few months to learn how to spell "porn" in english and then start downloading.

Yup, and how long before they hack the "filters"?! On a serious note, maybe they can capitalize on this and try for some education on the topic. In most developing nations, it would be quite a significant achievement if they expelled the the notion that, "If you use protection you will go to hell" ...

And with their "mesh" networking feature on the OLPC machine, they can all share their "data" at will....

Yes. I reckon it's probably a miniscule portion of the pilot scheme that are doing it but the media and anti-Negroponte brigade are having a field day. It is a pilot program after all and such problems were bound to arise.

Unfortunately they only have 1GB of Flash storage, no large pr0n archives for these kiddies http://up.edesignuk.com/files/1/Images/Smilies/CryStomping.gif

There are many more words I would use as a ten year old surfing the web. Man, kids have it made these days!

This is very true, particularly if you consider the declining average age of third-world populations (more kids per capita) while that of the industrialized world is on the rise (more adults who ain't having kids). The energy of global youth is shifting, and now pron will be fanning the flames!

This story kind of reminds me of when I got my first laptop, aged 13. :p And shortly after, my discovery of 'Clear History' and best of all, 'Private Browsing' in Safari! Hehehe :D

When I first saw this thread, I thought it was going to be the bad news that M$ had finally shoehorned their way into having Winblows installed on the OLPC laptops.

Seeing this though, I don't know whether to be relieved or cry...

These kids better not be surfing for porn. Those laptops are meant for training them to become pawns of Nigerian banking scams! ;)

This is a surprise? Seriously, kids + the Internet, of course they are going to look up that stuff, especially if they haven't had access to it before.

I know this isn't probably going to go down well with some people, but why not just let them look at it or educated them about the topic. If more restrictions are put in place all they are going to do is try harder to look at it/get around the filtering.

Abstract

^^^Maybe, but I doubt they have the natural technical know-how to just go around a filter. Kids in our society can't really be compared with kids from their society in this regard. They may be smart, but if this is the first time you have seen a computer, it's hard to get past a filter, so I think it may work.

Imagine if the children eventually search for the words "3rd World Country" and go, "Oh snap.....I live in a 3rd world country?!!" Maybe knowing how the rich Americans and British lifestyle looks like (ie: the cars, the houses, pools, bathrooms made of solid marble, etc) isn't a good thing to see photos of right now. Also, finding out that 3rd world countries (partially) exist to ensure that 1st world countries exist isn't a good thing for them to realize either. :o

It's like when Carlton (on the show Fresh Prince) found out he was black for the first time.

I don't reckon that pron will be much of a problem. How many of the owners of these machines are likely to have a Credit Card to feed the barons?

It's not that I think that kids should watch porn, but it's something that sooner or later they'll have to deal with (have sex). I bet they were just a bunch of them and they generalized. Kids are curious, period. They should have proper sex ed.

It's not their fault really. I remember when we first got Internet access, we we're showing my grandpa' how to download satellite weather pictures, and when you yahooed (no google, haha) "satelite weather pictures" at least the first three hits were porn.

It would be worse if they were looking up how to make molotov cocktails or improve their homemade napalm recipe or whatever... No kid, or person for that matter, should deal with that ever.

I'm sure one of those thousands of credit card numbers they steal from their 419 scams has enough credit available to get some good porn :D

Of course, it didn't click. Nigeria is where the 419s are from. Haha. That's ironic. But since schoolchildren are too young to create online scams what does anyone imagine they're going to use the computers for if not porn? Checking their stock quotes? :D

Heh. Wouldn't it be rather ironic if 419 scammers ended up trying to scam children posing as adults with credit cards just down the road.. :p
