Unfortunately it's not for the faint of heart, i.e. if you have no idea how to begin modding your iPhone don't try it!
It relies on some of the tools developed by the iPhone dev team (these guys rock!) and makes use of a new app called srelay.

Using the iPhone as a modem is against the AT&T TOS. It will be interesting to see if AT&T reacts to this.

Using any phone as a modem without the tethering option is against the TOS, yet I know many people (including myself) who do so without incident. The TOS deal is a non-issue, unless you want to take the moral high ground.

Surfing the net on the iPhone on EDGE is painful enough. Going through this just to suffer even more on a laptop?

Sometimes you NEED an internet connection. I would use my iPhone as a modem, once in a while, if I could.

This is great! I wonder why AT&T is such a butt about tethering. I suppose they feel it will use more bandwidth than running the web on just your iPhone?

Yeah unless you are abusing it (tethering), it's not a big deal. It is also likely that someone <hint, hint> will write a nice little app to simplify this process. I'm excited about the potential for upcoming 3rd party apps that give us freedom from Apple. I have a feeling that they are beginning to let the ball slip out of their hands as far providing iPhone users with functionality that is needed .
How about a patch for the web vulnerabilities at least, sheesh, is that asking for too much?

Hmm, is that right? I assumed that was just for the iPhone. Interesting. I have used tethering before on my SE T637 on AT&T.

Well I could be mistaken but I'm almost positive there is more than one vulnerability. Also, the security firm ISE informed Apple about several issues on 7/17(along with patches) and plans to report the rest of their findings at the Black Hat Conference on the 2nd of August if Apple doesn't patch them by then.

Anyone with a mac try this? It seems to be written for windows. It says open a terminal and "run" tetherify-osx-intel.sh
You cant just run it from the terminal, anyone have any clarity how to do this?
aristobrat
Jul 24, 2007, 08:00 PM
You may have to chmod it to be executable before you run it in Terminal.
chmod 755 tetherify-osx-intel.sh
and then
./tetherify-osx-intel.sh
should start the script
After G
Jul 24, 2007, 08:00 PM
chmod u+x path/to/tetherify-osx-intel.sh
Type that in terminal, and then run the script.
If you don't remember the path (or don't want to look), drag the script into Terminal, and it should automagically type the path out for you.

I just tried it out of curiosity and got some errors.
I got it to run with: sh tetherify-osx-intel.sh
But it wouldn't run because the script had parenthesis in the echo lines. I removed those and it looked like it was running (went through the phases) but it wasn't copying any files to either the phone or off the phone.
Then I tried just typing everything out manually that the scripts had but iphoneinterface said 'getfile' wasn't supported.

Thry doing it running jailbreak but not iphoneinterface. Thats what I had to do to get it to recognize any unix commands.

I had already run jailbreak and it rebooted the phone. I could/can run iphoneinterface and copy ringtones/png files over but I couldn't get it to properly run this script.
Seems some OS X users over at howardforums are having the issue as well but Windows users are reporting success.
I think I'll just wait for someone smarter than I to sort it out ;)

Seems written for windows with Macs as an afterthought. Oh well us mac guys had the ringtones first, we will have to wait a few days for tethering.

I for one am very excited this application was created. At my summerhouse, leeching off the neighbors network doesnt always work. Not to mention being on the road or on vacation, this app can save the day.
Thanks to all those involved in creating it!

Thanks, arn you're right he didn't use these instructions completely he used these:

and then he set up the ad-hoc network on his iPhone and laptop as per the instructions from the op, I think.

Fantastic news, and videos...
I can't wait till it is a really easy process. It shouldn't matter how we use unlimited data...whether it is from our iPhone or MBP or windows...it's all the same on their end.

Badass! I might have to get an iphone now :)
My verizon contract expires next month, and while I really do love vzw's network, the iPhone might just be too hard to pass up now...
(I tether all the time with verizon; tehthering over EVDO kicks ASS... Switching to the (much) slower EDGE is probably going to suck, but hey, I want an iPhone :D)

I can't see this happening in the UK. Unlimited data would mean that no-one would use the wifi hotspots or pay for wifi in starbucks...

I can see the need for this. Consider this: someone sends an email with a Word attachment that you need to modify and send back. -- Can't do that on the iPhone but can do it on you laptop. You can then tether your phone to the laptop, download the file, modify it, then send it back. You can do this at a rest stop on the side of the highway (where there are no "hot spots"). So this has real-world applications.

Am I totally mistaken here, or are Intel-based Macs the only Macs supported?
Is there any love for us PPC-based Mac users?

Seems these days that a lot of things are only applying to Intel mac's :( I loved the G5's, they were so gorgeous.

Anyone have any other info on this?

Right on.
This is great news.
My only disappointment over giving up my Blackberry Pearl for the iPhone was the loss of modem capability for my iBook.
Nice.

Yes, it should.
This is VERY Lame of Apple to leave this out.
It is obviously based on assumptions that laptop usage would consume too much bandwidth from ATT, etc, but I would bet in actuality this would not be the case.
Professionals would only use EDGE as a modem in dire circumstances.
I used it, for example, to update a webpage (just HTML) while desert camping. Minimal bandwidth here.

Has anyone been able to use any traffic other than HTTP on it? I cant seem to logon to instant messenger, or use other ports while tethered to EDGE.
Can anyone confirm/tell me what's wrong here?
Kchino
Jul 26, 2007, 08:37 PM
This set up is for web traffic only, on 1080. I'm sure there is a work around but don't know what it is, also you may be red flagged by AT&T by using other ports, the iPhone as you know doesn't do chat.
For those of you who were having trouble setting this up on intel macs in the comments section of the op, someone has put together a updated tetherkit.

I might have to give this a try... i'm leaving town, and nervous about not being able to connect back to my server from my laptop if anything happens.
hhmmm... i might need other ports tho.
I used BT DUN hack on my treo 650 for 3 years for emergency/mobile laptop usage. EDGE over wifi will surely be faster than that, so complaining from me!
Bravo!
Edit:
Ok, i'm trying to run it... jailbreak connects, I reboot into restore mode... then everything just sits there. What am i missing? iPhone just says : Connect to iTunes. jailbreak doesn't change. What exactly is supposed to happen after the reboot?
thanks!

I got this working using a modified guide..
Use jailbreak to unlock the phone.
Use iphoneinterface
Relock phone and add plist file.
Exit
Then
Download
http://dinkdoink.com/upload/tetherkit-osx.zip
unzip that file to the desktop
open terminal
type the following
cd Desktop
cd tetherkit-osx
chmod u+x *
then move jailbreak out
change to the phonedmg directory
cd (drag folder onto terminal it will autolink)
./jailbreak
(it should run)
cd
cd Desktop/tetherkit-osx
./tetherify-osx-intel.sh
Follow instructions
That worked for me and I was able to surf with my macbook at central park with my iphone in my pocket.
Many thanks to everyone who got this done.

I'd say it is very useful if you are on holiday (but still in the USA), within reach of the phone network, but without normal Internet access or with Internet access at exorbitant prices.
Example prices that I have seen: Tenerife is quite good, wireless access = 10Euro per day, 20Euro per week, 30 Euro per month; about half the island was covered last year. Hotels in Europe between 5Euro for 2 hours and 5Euro for 1/2 hour; that's where you would consider using the iPhone.
