View Full Version : Can't We All Just Be Friends?

Alright seriously, things are getting nuts around here.
Seems like every thread is erupting into fanboy wars again. Whether its about MGS going to 360, HD DVD price drop, the ****ing legality of mod chips, demos, whatever. It all ends in the same crap over and over and over. And more so, it just diverts the topic at hand (ie. the legality of modchips in the 360 HD DVD player price drop, or comics dissing the PS3 in the Heavenly Sword demo thread [followed by discussion of MRU's trip :p]). It's not that we shouldn't argue about it I suppose, people can talk about whatever the hell they want, but thread crapping is irritating and childish as hell.
Not only that but everything is becoming so horribly predictable. Nintendo boys won't give an inch on anything Sony does and visa versa for the Sony boys. Look, if you don't like Nintendo/Sony/MS then why not just NOT post in a Nintendo/Sony/MS thread?
Every regular around here know exactly where everyone else stands so is it REALLY necessary to crap on everyone else's preferred system just because you have some beef with the company behind it?
Why don't we just make three threads,
1) **** Sony, PS3 is a waste of Money, it sucks, overpriced junk thread
2) Nintendo is t3h lame, little kids' p.o.s, 480p suks b@ll5 thread
3) Greedy M$ wh0R3s! Screw teh 360! Halo is teh suXX0r
and be done with it? then people can laugh and have fun throwing FUD around about the system they hate and reveling in the system(s) they love and leave the OTHER threads for on hand discussion?
or even better

well I just found out that the little hazzard sign was a report post button :o
but it's more that everyone needs to be on the same page and be somewhat civilized. I know the internet and the whole anonymous thing makes people act like jerks much more so than if you were sitting face to face (I imagine of the arguments around here would have errupted into to fist fights, particularly if beer was added to the equation).
The people around here, when not busy screaming fanboy rhetoric, actually have insightful things to say and it would be nice to actually be able to read it without having to filter through 12 posts of "debating".

I respect others opinions, but there is a way to deliver that opinion for which the outcome does not incite such behavior.
Its okay to have product preference of something over another(if not we would all be pretty dull and bland),
but to continually CRAP on said product with negative rhetoric is not only counter-productive to the discussion,
but it causes the person to lose respect within the community.
I'll admit that I do occasionally take "jabs" at a persons stance, but I usually end it with a j/k (as its all in good fun)
but it seems as some would just assume cast the competition in a light that portrays them as evil incompetent scumbags, who do nothing but fail again and again and again.
(then it turns into a game of who can push who's buttons without violating the rules - thats even more childish than blatant attacks, IMHO)
The Pacers haven't won a championship in 20 years, but I don't go into the sports section and rub it in the faces of Pacers fans every chance I get.
I agree that we could all be a little more courteous to others opinions/views(without completely restructuring this section of the forums again ;))
But it takes two to tango......I will only sit by idly so long before I decide to get my hands "dirty" again.
(as blatant negative bias annoys me)
cheers and bless

Well...
1) I do know there has been a lot of attention to how the games forums are run and organised. Solutions to problems will never suit everyone, and...
2) In that case, if it's always the same thing, then there isn't much we can do about that.
But if anyone is being obnoxious, please do let us know. Thanks.

I agree...the problem seems to be the same thing over and over again. I think we'll live, but its up to the people who come here(the console forum) to be more adult about the whole thing.
Fun, friendly jabs happen, but things can quickly move out of hand.

Honestly, I don't see the problem; such arguments rarely end up with insult contests (the recent MGS thread may have gone too far; when that happens, just report it), and the actual discussions, while heated, are usually mentally stimulating, so I enjoy reading them.

I think we should be able to gently rib each other too. I mean we're just reading these things online...if you can't hold back a bit and get all flustered because some nameless person you've never met has a different opinion on a video game system...well you need to grow up a bit.
As it is now there's loads of stuff I want to say and loads of people who take things WAY too seriously that I'd love to point out in humorous ways but I'm afraid of being banned.
People need to chill out. We don't have to all get along and have the same opinions. Competition is good. Teasing people is fun :) At the end of the day is just an online forum. Nothing more. Grow up.

Nothing has gotten to the obnoxious level, hence I haven't reported anything.
However, can somebody please combine the three EA threads? I definitely reported that, but the mods didn't do anything. There's no reason for us to get a thread that asks "When will [insert EA game] be released?" or the two general on-going threads about EA missing the July release window.

I've checked that out. One of the threads no longer exists or the link given was incorrect, one of the others is very short and is about a specific game (Command and Conquer 3) and it's not really a duplicate of the other...

Yeah, we all really need to move beyond the whole "console war" mentality. Anybody who watched the E3 press conferences from Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft should a) realize that almost everything shown has been heavily reported or widely expected in the buildup to E3, b) know by now what to expect for the next 6-12 months, and c) know what general direction and what kind of strategies each of the big three are taking. We all know by now that the Wii's not getting Mass Effect, the Xbox 360's not getting fitness games, and the PS3's not going to get Mario Kart.
It's almost as bad as arguing about HD-DVD vs. Blu-Ray - I'd much rather be discussing the games and the movies themselves.

I have always loved Nintendo and Sony's gaming divisions, and have no good reasons to buy a Microsoft console(two home consoles + pc gaming is enough for me). Also, the only time I tend to "bash" any console is when someone decides to ignorantly bash another. Its one thing to state your position but its entirely different when you can only make negative statements about one particular system(which I have never done). To continually say; "oh what a failure, looks like they just keep ****ing up, when are they gonna do something right, pitiful console, etc. etc. - its not really productive conversation. In fact it usually ends up detailing a thread, because its never true(only opinion) and usually made to get a reaction from another user.. Sure us "Adults" could sit by and ignore all the "fanboyish" rhetoric, but there is no need to "run off" people who don't have the same beliefs as you. Its just like capitalism......competition is good, so don't go running off everyone who thinks differently than you(you may learn something). This is not directed at your or anyone else in particular, as I ma sure most of us here(who post in this section regularly) are probably all responsible for "baiting" someone at some point in time, but I still think there is an abundance if overly negative sentiment towards Sony in this section.(but thats just more of my opinion). Anywho, maybe this thread will calm things down for a while(again), but whether is sticks is anyboyd's guess.

Well, I see you joined in Jan 2007...
Just so you know, it's not a "everyone hates Sony" club. Actually, Sony was the leader originally. 2004-2006, everyone loved Sony. 2004-2005 everyone assumed PS3 would be winner. I was in the PS3/Revolution club, telling everyone I planned to buy both, as the PS3 looked to be more powerful, as Microsoft's system would suck without a next-gen disc format simply because it was needed for the HD games, etc, etc, and I preferred Sony's exclusives (Kingdom Hearts FTW!).
Through 2006 a lot of XBox 360 fans arose, but a lot were also disappointed in the fact that the best game was Geometry Wars.
But most of us (me included) were pro-PS3 and anti-Microsoft right up until the day of E3 2006. When Sony announced the price point of the PS3, showed off live demos far short of E3 2005 (proving those demos were never real), and took back half of their promises from the previous year (WiFi in all models, dual HDMI in all models, etc).
This board used to be Pro-Sony, Pro-Nintendo, anti-Microsoft. It switched around late 2006.
We had huge debates in 2005, and all the XBox 360 fans hated me.
I wasn't exactly wrong, I was just gullible (fell for Sony hype). There was tons of hype about of the XBox 360's processors were stripped down G5's really bad at certain types of work, and how next-gen systems required a lot more disk space. Meanwhile, Sony showed off fake demos to make the 360 look even more inadequate.
Turned out that modern compression made up for space problems (there is yet to be a two-disk 360 game) and the 360's processor isn't all that bad when paired with such a good GPU, and Sony's showings were fake and it was really just about the same as the 360.

A kind word for all....
What I must say however is that although the regulars with a particular allegiance / bias really do fight their corners - they often do so with at least some forethought or a base to their reasoning. There are times when a spanner is just thrown into a the works though for the sake of it and that does get silly.
But when it does seem to get out of hand, remember to use common sense. If your just annoyed by someone's stubbornness - that is not in itself enough to warrant a thread being reported. Simply take yourself out of it an let it calm down by itself. Give yourself a chance to bring back some objectivity to a situation rather than being bullish.
Whilst the mods do a great job of keeping MR up and running on a daily basis - there's no point shoveling a rack of erroneous reports to them that are just utterly time-wasting. It makes their job harder, and can lead to a misreading of a situation.
So come on guys - what makes MR a wonderful place is the 'community' and so I ask you to remember that you are part of that community and to respect it.
Fight your corner, but do so with intelligence, good humor and most importantly respect for others. They may not agree with you - but you should respect their opinion and they should respect yours.
Thanks all. MRU

Not in all cases. I believe that most of us would rather judge each case on their own merits... we work as a team and if there's something that's borderline we'll come to a consensus about it. Let us, as a team, be the judges on what is report-worthy. After all, one single incident here can be just the tip of an iceberg that is invisible to your eyes. ;)

What I was refering to BV was a while ago before you became a mod yourself; when the fighting in the games forum was probably at it's worst. There was apparently a deluge of people reporting each others posts and it really was out of hand. Being bombarded not with just 1 post here and there, but maybe a dozen or so from each thread - times that by a dozen threads etc. Nearly all of them were bad reports and it lead to a lot of needless timewasting and nasty business. Q himself mentioned this to me.
I dont think the forums or mods need for that situation to raise it's head again. Hence my plea for the people in this section to show a bit of common sense, and not report someone simply because they fail to see your side of the discussion.
I hope that makes sense :) MRU

I'm not gone or leaving or anything...one bad apple (no pun intended) doesn't spoil the bunch, and there are plenty of good apples here with good sensible things to say. :D
But of course everyone at one point or another gets into a heated discussion and FUD can be spread, but for the most part I believe there's a fair and equal bit of respect going on here when it all boils down to it - no matter what system(s) you own or prefer - and that's what counts. ;)
This place could be much worse, guys. Go lurk around on other boards like IGN, Gamefaqs/Gamespot or read some of the asinine comments on Joystiq and you'll all see we've got it pretty good here at MR for a website primarily dedicated to Apple products and not video game systems. :)

Hence my plea for the people in this section to show a bit of common sense, and not report someone simply because they fail to see your side of the discussion. The problem is, it seems that posters involved in heated discussions tend to have a harder time discerning between a statement from someone who disagrees with another's view point and direct personal insults.
Another problem is when during said heated discussions, differences of opinions are relayed with personal insults rather than statements regarding the issues being discussed.

Posts that violate any of the forum rules should be reported to the forum moderators by clicking the Report Post icon () on the bottom left of the offending post. If you are unsure whether a post should be reported, report it anyway and a moderator can decide whether any action needs to be taken.
All I want is for people to look at the forum rules from time to time (http://guides.macrumors.com/Help:Forum_Rules), report stuff that you believe contravenes those rules and let us sort it out.
What I don't want is for people to hold themselves back from reporting posts for fear of bothering us or being a nuisance. If it gets to that point, we will tell you.

Sometimes true; I remember it breaking down into personal insults once or twice, but I usually don't take things seriously. I've only felt I had to report someone once when he made a very graphic insult towards me, and I don't even remember who it was (I don't hold grudges).
The community pulls together though. I don't think a lot of people have hatred of others here. I don't have anyone on my ignore list and wouldn't want to lose any members here.
We actually have it REALLY good here. You should see how ridiculously worked up some people can get on other boards, taking any difference in opinion as a personal insult and resorting to flaming and cussing. That's why I prefer the discussions here on MR.
