Mac Pro freezes in screen saver

my mac pro freezes every so often while the screen saver is on. not sure if it really has anything to do with the screen saver or not, but was wondering if anyone knew what was going on
 
ok, i've reinstalled OSX, installed updates.....and my mac pro keeps crashing/freezing. i was just watching a movie and burning a dvd, and it crashed. i have 2GB of RAM, 2.66 quad, 4 hard drives, and 1 external hard drive.

any ideas?
 
okay, so i turned off screen saver. i added 4 gb of ram, so now i have 6gb of ram.

it's still crashing on me.

the first crash happened after installing the ram, updating the firmware, and leaving it on for over 1 day, i hit the expose button, and it froze in expose.

then last night, after having it on for about 1 day, or a little less, it froze again. (not in expose)

then it froze again just about 20-30 minutes later.

i have a 24" acer monitor and 20" dell monitor hooked up.

the only things i did different was turn on itunes sharing.

even in terminal if i type "last", it shows on there "crash"

any ideas on what i can do?
 
hmmm, could be a heat problem...
Has it been operating smoothly before it started to freeze?
Is your fans running properly (it is a silent beast, you never know)?

Or maybe its a faulty ram block? try take out the original 2GB of ram and let the new 4GB of ram stay in.
Has all of your ram blocks got the proper heatsinks attached?

i personally think it's a heat / dust problem. should i take compressed air to it?

the fans rev up every so often. and i have installed the firmware update and all

i think the problem could also be air flow. if you're willing to help me, tonight i can post pics of where it's sitting and see if we can come up with a better solution.

ok so i just got home from work....and it froze last night right after i went to bed.

i have it set for no screen saver, and it doesn't turn the monitor off....i turn it off manually.

so i went in there, turned the monitors on, and the mouse will move....but i can't click anything. and the clock said 11:30 PM (last night)

any ideas?
 
well the fans kick in pretty good when i start the dashboard. before i had a few applescripts running, but right now i'm not running them, and it hasn't crashed yet. been on for 5:39 so far. we'll see how long it lasts
 
well, my "Northbridge heat sink" is around 70-75 degrees if my fans run at 1000 RPM. Thats the hottest spot in my Mac Pro :-/
 
well, it could be the graphic card. Have you tried to take it out and tjek for dust? When I took my card out to replace the stock cooler with a better one, I was shocked over the amount of dust it had collected. 😱

well i haven't done that yet. i guess i need to do that today.

i also took some compressed air to it last night. opened up the door and all....there was some dust around the video card, but not a whole lot. it did seem to be running better last night. we'll see how long it lasts

it has been doing better. i haven't pushed it at all though. it's been going for over 1 day now. i think i'm going to start pushing it more to the limit, and see how it goes. the fans haven't been on that much either
 
well it started freezing again last night and today. i'm guessing it's a hardware problem, probably heat. what can i do about it?
 
well i'm still having problems. it must be the video card. but it's not under applecare. what should i do? buy another video card?
 
mac pro freezes every day! its getting worse please help!

this has been happening to me as well. It started out when my mac pro was just 2 months old - it would freeze up during screen savers and when playing world of warcraft. (So i stopped putting it to sleep and quit WOW) the screens (two apple 30" screens) would fill up with dots and lines and everything but the mouse locks up.. then it started happening when i watched youtube videos fully blown up - and now it freezes up everyday! - i took it to apple in the beginning and it wouldnt crash when it was there = maybe because they used a smaller screen? is this definitely my video card? could it be anything else? - cause im not under warranty anymore and my $7000+ mac freezes every day! PLEASE HELP!!

i opened it up and removed all the dust (there was a buildup) but that didnt solve the problem - i also moved the tower to be more out in the open to deal with any potential heat problems but that isnt workin either..
