View Full Version : Macs Showing Up at Best Buys

MacRumors
Jul 28, 2003, 11:48 PM
Scattered reports from readers, indicate that Macs have started showing up at Best Buys.

Sterling, VA: Setting up new Macs. Had 12", 17" PowerBooks, iBooks, PowerMacs, eMacs, iMacs and 17" LCD.

Bloomingdale, IL: Everything but the 17" Powerbook. Not on shelves, but boxes were stacked. - MacGuy283

San Carlos, CA: eMac, iMac and PowerMac with 17" LCD. No special Apple Section. "I didn't see any sign of an Apple employee or an Apple software but I am sure the store is still in the process of setting everything up as the products had no specs and the prices were handwritten." -- jgivens12.

Our previous report (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2003/07/20030727004224.shtml) indicated that a limited roll-out would begin with stores focused in California and Illinois, as well as scattered other states. Official launch date remains in August.

I know a Best Buy employee. Wonder if the employee discount applies to Apple stuff...

This is a good thing for Apple, IMO. Good way to get the average consumer to notice that there is a better, prettier option. :D

Just for clarification, Power mac obviously means G4 right? Otherwise everything sounds good besides the fact that they might not be in their own separate area. However, I have not personally decided whether that would be good or bad anyway, so I guess it doesn't really matter to me right now.

Come on man of course Powermac means G4. Do you really think Best Buy would be the first to receive the G5???? I'm not trying to flame you or anything, just seems kinda funny

I guess I said it wrong. I was just pointing out a possible source of ambiguity for newbies because the processor had not been specified. Of course it is not the G5. Don't worry. :)

I second that sentiment. Hopefully, the third time's the charm. Best Buy originally carried Performas and stuff back in the Amelio days, and then they were the first to be axed by Steve Jobs when he returned. Then Best Buy came crawling back to get a piece of the iMac frenzy, only to leave again when it couldn't even sell iMacs even when they practically sell themselves. And now they've come crawling back again to get a piece of the iPod business, and now, apparently, the Mac business.

I'm not holding my breath.

this is nothing but good news. so stoked. i think the best buy here in san francsico is pretty decent.. at least it's much better than the compUSA here... and there's parking (such a rarity here). not sure of their finance plan, but i'm hoping it's of the "0% for a year" type... i think i'm still paying for my ti400, but a dual gig is too tempting.

Anyone ask if Best Buy's same-as-cash purchase plans will apply to Apple computer products? That could be a big incentive to potential buyers. No interest for up to 18 months on qualifying purchases and no interest up to 24 (with monthly payments) or something insane like that.

Sure beats Apple's plan or CompUSA's, "Our no interest policy applies to Apple sometimes plan."

This is great for those who are already Apple fans who don't live near an Apple store. Otherwise, I don't know that this is such a great idea.

I think they should only bother trying to sell the "i" line (and emacs) because there is no way in hell they are going to sell PowerMac G4s. Anybody who thinks Best Buy is a good place to buy a computer is looking for a bargin - which in Wintel world means getting the "fastest" chip in the cheapest box.

Plus, have you ever tried asking for sales assistance or buying advice from someone at Best Buy? The sales people are 16 year olds who just want to collect their discount and take as many breaks as possible. They will never suggest that someone buy a Mac. "Do you know how many more games you can buy for a PC?!?!?!?"

I read that Apple is going to staff the Best Buys with their own sales people, but for how long?

Good luck.

CompUSA is staffed with Apple reps--permanently--and just one makes a big difference. Best Buy should be no different.

this is good, Apple needs to have its products in more places if its to grow its market. Perhaps they could get their stuff back in Sears, consumer line in Walmart etc. If not most of the world will continue with windblows.

I think putting Macs in Best Buy is a good move. Not too sure about Sears, especially Wal-Mart. But if this is going to succeed they will HAVE to stock Mac software - no one is going to buy a computer at a store that carries no software.

I wonder how Apple care will work? At Best Buy they always try to sell you thier "Extended Service Plan" which is a scam! Made 60 minutes if I recall correctly. I just hope the average Joe buying his/her first Mac doesn't "opt" for the Best Buy Plan vs. Apple Care and get burned. This worries me. Other than that I hope Apple does well by providing more exposure of thier products.

At the CompUSA here in Memphis TN the Apple area of the store is always in disarray, looks like crap and I have never, not once, seen an Apple rep in the store. I hope this is not the case in other CompUSA's perhaps my area is different because we have an Apple Store near buy (Saddlecreek) In any case I am worried that Apple will not be represented properly if I am to assume my local CompUSA is the normal model. How does the Apple area of CompUSA look in your City?

I'll have to go check it out today and see what they have. I'm going to be very curious about the software too. Having the 'major' apps is one thing, but if you've ever walked through the PC game section at BestBuy you'd have a hard time *not* finding what you want. If the same goes for Apple SW that will be great.

The only problem I see is the extra room that it will take up. We might not see all that much at first.

CompUSA stores are staffed via outsourced employees, NOT by Apple employees.

I know, because I was offered a job at a CompUSA here in Columbus, OH. Not as an Apple employee, but as an employee of the oursourcing firm meaning no Apple discounts and no CompUSA discounts. It was all the way on the other side of the city and things came up at my fulltime job that prevented my taking on a parttime job.

However, there is a Best Buy five minutes from where I worked. I actually worked there for a few months during the Xmas season.

If the employees are actually Apple employees, that would be extremely nice and convenient for me as a part time job.

And they're setting up iBooks and G4 towers right NOW.

Funny how the Chicago area is one of the "test markets" with 3 Apple Stores already, a few CompUSA locations carrying Macs, 2 MicroCenter locations carrying Macs, and a 4th Apple Store under construction in Skokie....

I checked Apple's Job Listings for the towns where BBs are located in my market and each one was listed. However, there were no positions available in any of the towns. When I was in my hometown BB, I had a BB guy search their inventory and there was Apple products listed to be available on 8/3. That makes sense as BB starts their sales on Sunday when their flyers hit the papers.

...ummm, it's not just the Apple area in the Memphis Store that is messed up, the whole store is in disarray. The last time I was in there, maybe three weeks ago, they were moving the shelves to go diagonal to the walls.

Aisle naming doesn't always match the product type on the shelves.

Software for the Mac is frequently mixed in with the peasea stuff.

Hardware for the Mac is frequently mixed in with the peasea stuff.
=-=
I have seen an Apple rep in the Memphis store, in the Apple section, several times, but not recently. He was setting up the computers on the shelves. I guess he has not been there for a few months. He needs to return and overhaul the Apple section. He needs to search out the software titles and hardware pieces that work on a Mac and put those on the proper allocated shelves ...

... in the Apple section.

The Apple section of the Memphis CompUSA store still needs a lot of work.

It doesn't make a bit of difference if the person doing the fix-up is an Apple employee, an outsourced temp, or a CompUSA employee.

Different managers manage individual stores differently. Corporate tries to influence what they can, and set general guidlines nationwide... but not all Best Buys are staffed by unknowledgeble slacker 16 year olds. In fact, employees of all types are present at most stores (Chose a combination from groups A, B, and C):

Group A (People aged):
(1) 16 - 20 Years
(2) 21 - 30 Years
(3) 31 - 40 Years
(4) 41+ Years

Group B (Knowledge level):
(1) "That's a good discount they have here."
(2) "I used a Mac in high school."
(3) "It's about time they started selling Macs."
(4) "The new Mac is really cool."
(5) "I know as much as Steve Jobs about both Macs and PCs."

Group C (Sales Approach):
(1) "PC R0xx0rz!"
(2) "Disparanging any product will get you fired."
(3) "I'm not on commission. Which expensive computer would you like to buy (w/ PSP)?"

In summary, having worked at Best Buy, and having lived in Arizona and Minnesota, I've noticed that the experience is not the same anywhere. Same thing with CompUSA. The one near me sucks, but the one 10 miles away is happy and staffed with a higher caliber of employee. But the most important thing is to find a salesperson who you like. If you don't like the attitude of the person you're talking to, talk to someone else. If you mention that you didn't like the attitude, it's likely to make a difference.

The discussion about "All Best Buy employees and service plans are stupid!" "No they arent!" "Yes they are! I bought something there once!" "I should know!" "No you shouldn't!" "Yes I should!" isn't getting anywhere.

Actually, I think apple has a thing against the state of South Carolina. In the Charelston, SC area there are no CompUSA's, no apple stores, and one Best Buy that's a half hour car drive and the last time I was there they said they had no info on carrying apple products. I would be pleasantly shocked if they started carrying them! The only store in the entire state that carries apple products is a compUSA in Greenville, which is very, very far from the coast! If I had only stayed on Long Island, I would be surrounded by apple stores and apple resellers!!!

Just to correct this post. There are many CompUSAs that have a "bona-fide" Apple employee working in them. Not all stores do, however.

Apple does occasionally use MarketSource (If I remember correctly) to have people work in the Apple area, clean it up, etc.

The Apple employees are ASCs (Apple Sales Consultants), they work for Apple, they get CompUSA discounts. Apple is expanding the ASC program to include more CompUSAs in it. But for example, in the Tampa Bay area, there are three stores, but only one of them has an ASC in it.

Apple and Best Buy are currently working out getting the ASC program in Best Buys. I have a nice long editorial about it here (http://www.flyonthemac.com/index.php?action=view_editorial&editorial=7), if you wish to read some of the issues surrounding it.

I also went by the San Carlos store. The G4 they had on display was a single CPU 1.2GHz G4. They had one 15" and one 17" iMac on display.

Most disappointing to me, there was no sign of any Mac software or accessories, which makes me fear the whole endeavor will be a bust. The first thing ignorant PC bigots usually say is that there's no software for Macs, and having machines with no supporting products in Best Buy will just reinforce that myth.

Where I live (Little Rock, AR), CompUSA is the only place to buy Apple equipment and it is staffed by a genuine Apple employee. Apple nametag and he even gave me an Apple business card with an @apple.com email address on it.

That doesn't change the fact that CompUSA sucks ass and I will never buy anything from them again. Be sure to check their return policy because they charge a 15% restocking fee on everything, and full retail price plus sales tax. Just my two cents. You're much better buying online and not paying the sales tax.

I think this will be the biggest benefit to existing mac users...a brick and mortar place to get their software if they want it. There are still a lot of people out there who aren't comfortable with buying online on a regular basis.

Hi dnedrow,

You were offered the job at the Columbus CompUSA as (what you call an) "outsourced" employee (probably though MarketSource or Volt) because Apple has a store in Columbus. In cities were Apple doesn't have AppleStores the CompUSAs have full time badged Apple employees. However, I do not know much much longer that will continue, or if it will be the same for BestBuy.

I called up Best Buy (nationwide questions line) and asked if their financing plans will be available for the Apple products. At first the guy didn't seem to want to admit they were carrying Apple products, but he quickly recovered. He said that their financing specials which people have mentioned here are not available for everything in the store, but are just week long specials on individual products. So I would have to watch the weekly flyers to see if such an offer was ever made available. Does this match what you guys know to be true? I am not normally a Best Buy customer, so I do not know. Let me know, Thanks!

I just called the four Best Buy locations in Columbus Ohio closest to me to check and see if they know anything about the Apple products.

Store #295) Didn't know anything about BBs stocking Apple products. This store is just down the road from an AppleStore, so who knows, they might not even get the Apple products.

Store #156) They just found out today that they would be carrying the Apple products. They had no details. They could not say when they would have stock on hand, or if the financing plans would apply.

Store #292) Didn't know anything about Apple. They said if it happened that he would be surprised if it happened before November.

Store #570) Didn't know anything about it happening at all.

How about you guys? Whats going on at your local Best Buy stores?

A few days ago I had a team meeting at best buy and my supervisor let the PC department know that we would be getting macs within the next few months. This is in the Long Island, NY area. I guess they are stocking them quicker than previously thought. My supervisor also told me that there was a list of what we were supposed to carry but he doesnt remember what was on it. 25% of our employees were anxious to receive them but the other 75% just rolled their eyes. My supervisor said that we will be trained HEAVILY. So we might receive training and there might also be an apple rep to help us out. He didnt say anything about the no interest financing (its 24 months for this weeks promotion) and nothing about software or accessories. No word on the G5 either. Hopefully I can find out more tomorrow at work. If anyone has any SKUs or employee prices, let me know. Thanks.

SSMagicman,

I used to work at 570 and stopped in there today. The guy that's worked in the PC area for a number of years hadn't even heard that other BBs were getting stocked. He got a chuckle when I told him what appeared to be happening, since they had just cleaned out under the decks and found Apple accessories that must have been left from when they sold them 8 years ago.

You said there were listings for the Columbus area on jobs.apple.com? That weren't Easton Center? Believe, I'd pounce at a chance to work at BB 50 as an Apple rep (part time). It's about 5 minutes from my day job and 7 minutes from home.

I can personally vouch for the fact that Macs are on display at the Best Buy here in Fairfield, CA. (Northern Calif, between Sacramento and the SF Bay Area). It will be interesting to see how well they do here, especially considering there is a CompUseless, er CompUSA, just 10 miles up the road in Vacaville.

This is good for Best Buy. I know that the one here gets a lot of people asking for Macs, so once they start to arrive, it should spark a new group of customers. Currrently, the only places in town to buy Macs is CompUSA ( with their truly terrible customer service) and an Apple licensed store (which charges more than Apple does when you order online and pay for shipping)

I just hope they get them in stock sooner rather than later...

I agree that Apple is missing out on SC. I just went to Atlanta (a 3 hour drive) this weekend to get my iBook SE checked out by a Mac Genius. Sigh. I wish we'd get an Apple store though Best Buy is good enough.

BTW, what's a yankee doin' down here?! :D Just Kidding!

HECK YEAH!!!!! Columbia is a hop, skip and jump away from Charleston...and my old stomping grounds. I went to school at University of South Carolina a few years back. My fiance and I were planning on going to see some friends in September, and I'll definately be going to Best Buy!!!! Only an hour and a half away!

There's an Apple retailer here in Savannah just two hours away. AIS is small, but it's all Apple (and it's in the same shopping center as Best Buy!).

So, see, your first task is to sell that 75% on Macs. Heavy training should help. Dragging unrepentant PC bigots out back and beating them senseless might also be required.

Was at the Schaumburg, IL Best Buy last night, and I can confirm Apple hardware was stocked and on display. No signage, however, so they were probably just getting set up. Hardware on display included a 17" iMac, an iBook (not sure of model), 15" PowerBook, and a PMG4.
