View Full Version : Mario Strikers: Charged (for US)

It came out today here in the US, and I picked it up and I must say its a crazy/fun game. The only experience I had with strikers before, was playing the game cube version about a year ago in a gamestop store, and thinking to myself wow this game is crazy. I thought about getting it then, but then saw it was coming out for the wii so i held off. Did anyone else buy it? Anyone wanna exchange friend code(s) so we can play?

I've got it, it's embarassing to think that so many people are going to overtake me on this game :o I only play multiplayer - haven't touched single yet. I'll get my code later and expect to get owned.

Head start? What head start? :D

The codes are regionalized just like the game. Yay Nintendo! They are well on their way to screwing themselves in online play again.

They need to have a single account/ID that lets you play any wi-fi game, this code crap is just that.. crap.

I'll boot up the game in a few, hopefully its as good as the reviews have made it out to be.

Friendly matches are casual matches in which players can go up against their friends. Unlike the ranked matches, the unranked matches use the friend code system, are not region specific, and there is no point system involved for winning or losing matches.

Random match= region.
Friends= any region.

Curious to hear what y'all think of this game. Already have Striker for the 'cube, and not sure I need another edition for $50.

Well so far this game has been outta hand. I don't kno if the cube version has online play, but the wifi on the wii makes it real fun. I thought I was doing alright, winning about 3 out of 4 matches..and I just got my ass kicked 15-2. I think over at ign they have a pretty good comparison to the cube version. So far it's been fun, and it seems like a game that'll be real fun, and I wont get bored of anytime soon..

What? Sorry, I've been too busy playing.

This game freakin' rocks for multiplayer. I got a friend over to play co-op through the first cup.

Jimmi; on single player you can have friends on your team. So try out single player :D That's how you unlock multiplayer stages and characters!

Yea, multiplayer = rocks. It's done the unthinkable and shunned Smash Bros Melee off the multiplayer thrown (for me at least). I'm going to try and get Caroline into it tomorrow since my sisters away at the moment (she's 15 and amazing at this. We're balanced. Something has levelled the playing field for sure).

What are all your fave teams? I just stick with Mario/Luigi, with Toad, Koopa Trooper and Birdo.

The game is slightly more psychotic than the GameCube version, if you have played that one. Everything has been improved: better AI, customizable sidekicks, better arena selection, arenas that affect you and your opponent's abilities, goalie control mini-game for Charged shots.

The AI in the single player modes are definitely putting up more of a fight. The challenge mode actually gets difficult, and the first cup starts off slightly difficult. They had me on the edge at moments. I think it comes from the addition of the evasion abilities when you have the ball. The arenas might change up your strategy up a little. The goalie mini-game is kind of decent. I just think it would've been cooler to hold your arms with the nunchuck and Wii remote and block shots that way.

Online was pretty lag-free as long as you're above 4 stars (or is that the highest?). I played three series, lost all three, but there was no lag for the first, lag for the second, and lag in the beginning but it disappeared for the third. Online is insane. People are ridiculously good. It boggles my mind. I beat people to a pulp in the GameCube version, but on the Wii, I got 2 wins in those 9 matches. :(

You know, I'm glad there's no voice-chatting enabled in Wii games. Strikers is one of those games where you really want to yell out obscenities at your opponents... :)

Friend Code: 425308-477929, Mii: Charles. I'm likely be on in the afternoon (US EST) on weekdays.

Game kicks ass.. especially online! Me and my brother have been going at it for the past couple of hours. Wish there was a way to communicate with him though. Haven't played a ranked match yet though. Here's my game code: 386653 780449

Do we have to have each others' console #s for this to work? Anyhoo, if you add me, let me know so I can add you too!

dang too bad i have to wait until september to add you guys since i'm currently playing with my brothers console and not mine

my fav team is waluigi, birdo, bohoo and zombie-koopa (what's the english name ? )

i personally like to have a fast team and waluigi provides that extra defense value with those long tackles
weak point is that in terms of shooting you are depending a lot on Birdo and on your own game reading skills for keeping opponent under pressure

another good combo is 2 birdo, 1 zombie and peach

and if you want to shoot blindly replace peach with the big ape ;)

Go to see your friends list, it's written on top of the screen.

It's all about the multiplayer...
The only improvement I can think of would be if there was some way to communicate with the opponent as you kick their behind.

Well, the weaknesses most people point out in Strikers have to do with the single player game - multiplayer is pretty much universally praised. Lair's criticism stems from poor controls and unoriginality. =)

I think the items and strikes are hilarious. If your team is properly balanced then your opponents shouldn't get off a megastrike more than once a game - it just takes a long time.

I've heard some people complain that the game seems random, but it's really anything but. You have to balance ball possession with the risk of fouling your opponents and giving them items, etc. There's skill to it.

I was holding out on this game.... The last incarnation didn't look that interesting, and this one wasn't really getting my interest, either. However, all these recommendations, and all these MR folks playing has really gotten me considering it!

Better multiplayer than SSBM? That's hard to believe, but it's that the kind of talk that gets me interested. :) And an online Wii title at that!

Sounds good. :) Did I ever play MK DS against you, Praxis? I played a few people on the board, but match races just weren't enough to keep me interested. If they would have thrown in GP and battlemode, now that would have kept me hooked.

if you have friends with roughly equal skill it is better... luckily me and my friends all are very close in skill and thus every game gets heart wrecking exciting

overall i would say that the playing field is more equal compared to smash brothers

and if you get too many super strikes incoming then you should reconsider your team and go for a more defensive one .. i perhaps get 1-2 with rather low amount of balls and get perhaps to shot 1-2
but we also had games with not a single super strike

Maybe we don't know how to play it properly yet, but in our games the only time you get a super strike is by being either Mario or Luigi and using that giant mushroom item. It has never happened otherwise. The captain is always tackled before that bar pops up.

well all special attacks are valuable: with walugi you can form a box with his special attack so that nobody can tackle you

also of course the star can also be a life saver

without items, etc it's hard but still possible if the enemy is too confident or makes some error

It's a matter of cover. Generally (we were playing 2v2) you have your teammate bite the bullet by hitting any players that might be nearby, giving you just enough time to get off a megastrike - this was typically how it worked when we used Daisy and Waluigi. It becomes a balance between giving the other team items and getting the points.

Hammer Bros.' special strike is absolute money, though. My goodness.

And yeah, the game can get nail-bitingly, hysterically intense with two well-matched teams. One match we spent 7 minutes (!) in sudden death before one of us managed to eke out a point. It was fantastic.

ever tried to jump over the golie with toad and walk into the goal? if you can pull that off in sudden death at a party it's all the rage i promise you that

that said i prefer birdo + boohoo in offense since birdo is somehow feeling faster than hammer bros to me (which is of course all mind tricks)

GFLPraxis

Jimmi, if nobody's getting Megastrikes, how about you try playing against me and see what happens? :D

My team is:

1) Toad
Fast, short range hitter; he can jump over the goalie if perfectly timed. If the opponent's defense is too good to get in a charge shot I just have toad run for it. He's also my primary defense since he's fast enough to catch anyone.

2) Birdo
Long range hitter; Birdo's charge move can score a goal from the center of the stage, if no one is in the way. I usually do my best to knock down everyone and give Birdo a free shot.

3) Hammer Bros.
Best defense, and medium range; if you get just the right distance from the goalie, you can score every time you get a charge shot as your hammers knock him out while you kick the ball in. And his defensive attack is KILLER. The sheer amount of mayhem it causes sometimes causes people to get scared and back off, giving you a second to charge.

I use Peach for speed.

Also, Waluigi has a very cheap way of pulling off megastrikes. You can use Waluigi Wall to put a wall around you and start charging within that wall.

Ja Di ksw
Aug 17, 2007, 11:34 AM
I usually try to go with:

Waluigi: Very fast, helps for stealing the ball or hitting people who are about to take a shot. Also can wall yourself off for the megastrike, no more "cheap" in my opinion than surrounding yourself in a fart cloud or slamming the ground to knock people away first.

Hammer Bros - really only using him for his skill shot, he's too slow for much else.

Birdo - Good long range shot and moderately quick.

Dry Bones - Fast enough to stop the opponents from shooting, decent skill shot but not great.

another pretty high pressure team i once used against a friend is going with

1 dry bones (in defensive position)
2 birdos
1 donkey kong

result: you can shot from every position to score goals with birdos and donkey kong.. which makes defense really hard for the enemy with charged balls and all 4 chars happen to have a great defense attack (donkey kong sliding for intercepting balls in enemy half)
after a quite leveled 3:2 game or so with equal stats i totally murdered my opponent with this team with more than 20 shots on goal opposed to perhaps 2-3
