It all depends on what "iMac revision" means... Whether it's an outpatient procedure or major surgery. Here's hoping for the latter!

Did any one read the game news today on appleinsider (http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/07/08/06/gaming_news_ea_ready_to_roll_with_cc_3_id_previews_rage.html)? "Command & Conquer 3 will be revolutionized right here on August 7th, be sure to check back!," the company wrote in a web posting.
I know this is probably a dream. But what if this means that the new iMac will have a touch screen simaller to the iPhone. Any ideas???? or thoughts

Any ideas???? or thoughtsThis has been brought up many times, Multitouch on iMac. This is the WORST IDEA EVER. There's not one good reason to put Multitouch on a desktop PC! Why would anyone want to have their arms up over their desk to interface with their computer, when we have a perfectly functional mouse and keyboard for that?! I don't understand why anyone would even suggest it.

My predictions (in no particular order)-
-New versions of iLife and iWork will be demoed, to be released with Leopard -iLife now a part of OS X
-New iMacs with new keyboards
-Mac Mini updated with new form factor, faster processor, better graphics
-A specific Leopard release date announced
-One more thing: Preorder Leopard and get access to the beta! (not likely :( )

Very good list. You have a good handle on Apple's spiel. Only problem I see with your list is, they wouldn't pre-announce a new iPod. Doesn't really make sense.

Would I call AppleTV or iPhone Macs? Certainly not. Neither would I call an OSX iPod a Mac. To me, a Mac is a Personal Computer. The same way I wouldn't refer to a Palmtop running Windows Mobile a PC. It has a processor, RAM, internal storage, I can browse the internet on it, word process, but I still wouldn't call it a personal computer.
I do appreciate your point however, the line is becoming increasingly blurred. Not just in Apple products but everywhere.
Thats just my opinion, I don't want to get drawn into a semantics debate. Theres no 100% correct answer. :)
I would say there is a correct answer - at least from Apple. Just look at their website - there are three main button reflecting their three main business. If you click the Mac button you will see what belongs to the Mac business from Apples perspective.

Totally agree with you man. How difficult would multi touch be to use on a 20"-24" screen. Touch screens are for kiosks, and small screens/areas not desktop monitors.
We could find multi-touch integrated into a future apple mouse or keyboard though.

Interesting mockups, kon, but I don't like the two-toned scheme. The bezel needs to also be black.
I really like the idea of a black anodized case however - a plain aluminum case would be quite similar to the current white plastic (just in the look). I've never liked the black plastic Macbook, but this looks decent.

i do not understand why people think redesigned imac means, change the machine, leave the stand untouched. that is way too half-ass for ive. i think that the mockups are derived so much off of the current design that they lack the vision needed to meet apple's standard of a redesigned system. i appreciate the insight attempted by the renderings, i simply think that it shows where normal minds stop and ive/jobs begin.
i may be totally wrong tomorrow afternoon.
ps: if they do not release new imacs tomorrow, i am going to go into my backyard take all the cash i have waiting for my system and light it on fire.

True. However, the iPod is due an upgrade (September 2006 was the last). I think this makes sense as there won't be anything special in the upgrae for the iPod in my view.
I am pretty sure there won't be a new touch screen, probably not even a widescreen version. The only things likely to chage will be the form of the iPod (brushed aluminum anyone?) and the use of NAND flash memory (in my opinion a step backwards, as NAND flash iPods would have a smaller storage space than hard drive iPods).
I think there will be a pre-announcement of this because. From september, Leopard should be going "gold master" and Apple will want all the focus on the build up for the Leopard launch. (expect a mass of new adverts) They will not want any distractions in marketing it. Leopard, is arguably the best chance Apple have of taking "big" slice of the market. The "tepid" reception of Vista, Mac's continual sales growth and with the announcement that "Cider" will be used to transfer PC games to the Mac, its important to start targeting PC's users (especially gamers) with the message "why upgrade to Vista...upgrade to a Mac". A new iPod launched in September would be a distraction in my eye.

Part of the problem with those mockups is that the monitor is almost Movie aspect ratio rather than 16:10 or whatever the hell it is. Although i don't see a reason why Apple couldn't do that if the vertical resolution was good enough!

I agree. No reason to think the stand will be the same at all. For instance, moving the power supply to the stand along with maybe the hard drive would give them enough of a 'heat budget' to use real desktop processors. :D

Too low to the desk for me. I really hope Apple make something with a screen that's a little more movable than the mock up versions we keep seeing. I love the simplicity of the latest iMac but the iMac G4 is very good in that you can really tilt or swivel the screen to where you want it.

Hey, I thought of moving the PSU to the stand too, but not the hard drive! Great idea! Plus, how about some ports attached to the base in the front?
Oh, and on those mockups and even the real model the alu base and white/black around the screen doesn't look good.

Here's how it'll go (I think):
1. Intro. Mac sales figures
2. iLife
3. iWork
4. .Mac (which will be heavely tied in with iLife and iWork)
5. One more thing... (choose either 6a or 6b)
6a. You'll need a computer to use that with
6b. Release date of Leopard
Or the release date will be thown in the presenation somewhere.

I agree that there will almost certainly be no touch screen tomorrow. And while I don't see the logic behind a touchscreen desktop computer, you have to imagine that people said the same thing about needing a mouse to control a computer. When I'm posting about future technology that I think is unlikely, I think back to the MacRumors threads from people right after the original iPod announcement, way back in time, who said "what a stupid idea" and "it'll never sell".

No. A touchscreen on a pocketable computer phone makes perfect sense. A touchscreen on a desktop computer makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.
You make the mistake of assuming that it will remain a desktop computer in the traditional sense. You reach out and touch your keyboard and mouse with few problems. You look down to read books with few problems. Placing a touchscreen display on a desk surface (either integrated into it or resting on top of it) is no more laborious than using a keyboard and has all sorts of benefits from direct interaction to reduced eyestrain and being able to examine fine details more easily.
I'm not saying that's what the iMac will be or should be. But like the "smudge" people (have they never looked at their keyboards? Do they not clean them every few days like they should?), it doesn't make sense to dismiss a technology based on preconceptions of how current designs and functionality limit it.
It's far easier to clean a screen than a keyboard. Anything your hand touches should be cleaned at the same interval regardless--mice, keyboard, display. It makes no difference. It also makes no difference when looking through a surface designed for touch interaction. Just because a smudge on your LCD is visible doesn't mean that it would be on a touch panel--they're built differently. A traditional LCD isn't meant to be touched. It's positioned perpendicular to the ground, which is tiring to use without standing, and it's not coated to protect it against skin oils. It's not hard to imagine solutions for these problems, especially since solutions already exist.

actually a multi touch computer laying on a desk would be more ergonomical for your hands and eyes. but you have to understand that yea your keyboard needs the same cleaning but you are instantly smudging what you are looking at. so you would need to clean the screen every few seconds
but i do see a mactablet in the near future

A computer screen laying flat or nearly flat on my desk would take up too much desk space. I can see this for specialty purposes, but for the vast majority of us, it doesn't seem practical.
On a tablet Mac, obviously, a touch screen makes a lot of sense.

That's utterly ludicrous. You can't see the "smudges" over the backlight unless you're leaving puddles on the display. If you'd used high-end touch displays on a regular basis, you'd know that. The coatings used are specially coated for streaks and optimal transparency, and they work very well.

It doesn't have to take up any more desk surface area than a current iMac. Why would it? Put it on a tilting base and tilt the screen near horizontal when using the touch interface for an extended period. Then, pull the display up, similar to the current iMac, and slide it back when you're using the keyboard and mouse primarily. If you don't use the multitouch interface much, there's no reason to treat it differently than any other machine you might use.

Of course, the real issue is why you don't use it. If we were having this discussion 25 years ago, you'd be saying the same thing about the mouse. It was more or less pointless (no pun intended), but it rapidly became invaluable.

Touchscreen iMac.
Why?
Why Not?
Let's think about all the patents, the recent used technology in the iPhone, buying Fingerworks, the great succes of the iPhone etc.
But wait, you can't work with your big fat fingers in photoshop! You must have a mouse and a keyboard for this sort of work. Now that's where the fun starts to happen. An iMac with a dock for working on a desktop. Eject the iMac and it will be a tablet with iPhone similar interface, only bigger, with a decent keyboard. Here's a simple mock-up i made a few months ago:

It has been suggested in previous post, but I will emphasize it again: do you really think a touch screen for a 20" computer is a wise thing? Apart from the trouble of moving back and forward in order to reach the screen each time, can you imagine the amount of dirt and fat that the screen will gather after a few hours or days? :o

No you don't understand what i mean. When you work on your desk, you connect in sort of a docking system and then work with keyboard and mouse. While you browse Safari, watch movies, photos, google maps, in your garden iPhone style. The size of this device can be smaller as in the past. Noticed that the iPhone is 160 dpi instead of 72.

I would love it to have some parts of the screen as touchscreen, such as the dock, a touchpad/screen would be great on the keyboard, the problem with a touchscreen computer, it would be really cool but a mouse is sooo much quicker.
Touchscreen is Good for,
scrolling,
showing off
moving windows around
in some case much much quicker then a mouse
Bad for

you would look silly
in some cases much much slower then a mouse

Well at least i want that one for photoshop, you know, posters n stuff - ultimate design computer :apple:
a rotateable display would be good, but ONLY if the rotation is a) handled by the card in hardware or b) the drivers' performance isn't as **** as the ones in windows.

Me too, although I would only buy it for the design, it's amazing.
Not really a fan of touchscreen/tablet computers...Indeed. It is a stupid idea to have a desktop mac with Multitouch. If it's a tablet, that's a different story. But a desktop mac with Multitouch makes no sense whatsoever. Noone wants to interface with a screen, at a desk, lifting their arms up across the desk to play with the screen, when a perfectly good mouse and keyboard are at their disposal.
