View Full Version : Anyone else relieved after they found out 8GB was enough?

I remember when it was first announced, I knew that I wanted to buy it...but the thing that bothered me was having that beautiful large screen and roughly 7.3GB of space for videos, music, and pictures. But after I began to use it along with iTunes, I noticed that it didn't really matter how many GBs it had, it just depended on my responsibility to load it with only the media that I actually needed.

I think we're all spoiled by our iPods with dozens of GBs, do we really need all that space...especially when it increases the sizes of the players and limits their usability in rougher situations such as atheltics?

I think 8 Gig is plenty.
You're not going to sit there and load that many songs or movies to watch on your phone. Its more than enough of space I think.
I got 5 movies on my Iphone and about 120 of my favorite songs, about 100 pictures and theres still 4 gigs empty.

I also thought I'd be disappointed with only 8 gigs - but it is enough. My 60GB iPod now powers the car stereo full time - with all my music on it . On the iPhone, I keep an on-the-go couple hundred songs, all my photos from the last year, a few photo albums and several dozen videos - as well as a current editing project or two, with room to spare.

love it.

I agree on the music side. I just had to spend some time working on my playlists, which I needed to do anyway. I do wish it had a bit more space for tv shows and movies, since I travel every week for work. I also need a case with some velcro or sticky tape with which you can hang the iPhone from the back of the seat in front of me.

If you're flying, why not buy one of those horizontal stand-up cases?

Tried that, actually, with my video ipod. The stand goes on the tray, which means you are looking down. My neck got pretty sore watching The Empire Strikes Back that way. Someone needs to invent a way to hang the iPhone from the back of the seat in front of you, at eye level. Hard to do, since some seats are cloth and some are fake leather, and sometimes the seat in front of you is reclined into your nose. If they could throw in a way to push the seat in front of you forward about 12 more inches, that would be great too.

I totally agree. Initially I thought, damn, if only there was more space but after taking the plunge and realistically thinking about what do i really need on a daily phone. 8gb is more than enough for me.

I must admit I want more space. I put 4 GB of music and 2 GB of videos, and then some photos, and it fills it up.

I had the same experience with the iPod video folding case. But short of a seat redesign or intruding on the space of the seat holder, I'm stumped as how to mount a device on a seat back.

Someday, there will be a hardware G:cool::cool:gle we'll have mounted on our faces.

Then they'll find a way to put it inside our heads.

In my recent travels, I found the 8GB iPhone more than enough for everyday use. I had 4 movies loaded, and my favorite play lists. I still travel with my 60gb iPod for the benefit of hotels tha use the iHome docking stations...

if only the iPhone had some...mechanism or program which would allow it to connect to other computers around the world where they had music or photos or even videos!

You could then connect to these other computer networks wirelessly and then see what they had without using up any of the 8 gigs!

This "internet" as I have called it, would allow you to listen to music (seeqpod) or view movies (youtube) or whatever your heart desires.

I know I know, this is crazy talk, but trust me, one day it'll happen and then you'll come and say "hey sobe, you were right way back when!"

And I will just knowingly smirk, nod, and walk away.

On a flight later today (flight #5 this week), I am going to take a piece of string and try to loop it through my iPhone case and then around the little hook that holds the seat tray up -- the hook originally designed (but never used for) hanging a jacket. I think it will work, I'm just worried that if the person in front of me is one of those who reclines their seat back without the courtesy of a look first, my iPhone could go flying.

It's about though when you think "I want to listen to that song, I haven't heard it in a year or two," and it being on the phone. With limited capacity, it might not be on the phone.

I purchased my iPhone on June 29th at an ATT store... they only had 4GB in stock when I got there, so I got it.

As it turns out, I'm perfectly fine with the 4GB. I don't really use the iPod part of the phone that much, but I constantly use the email, web, and widgets.

For me, 8GB would have been overkill, and $100 out of my pocket.

/(for folks that travel a lot, or commute via train, etc... yeah, the 8GB would be a better choice)

Yep, and since I dont listen to any Brittney Spears type crap, odds are I'll want to listen to a song that several years old.

As it is, 8GB is fine for me. Coming from a 4GB Nano, it's more than enough. Now, if you could actually mount the iPhone as a removable drive... it'd be nice if there was a 20GB model. Anything over 20 would just be rediculous for a phone IMO because at that point there's better solutions out there for what you're probably using the phone for. Admittedly, already paying $600 for an 8GB model, even if there was a 20GB model, I don't think I'd wanna fork over any more money for the higher capacity version. The 8GB, in my eyes, is a nice compromise between capacity and price.

Agreed! Thank you!!! I simply created a playlist for my iPhone. I never really used my video iPod, so I sold it. Sure, I loaded my iPhone with videos initially, but I eventually removed them b/c I don't have time to watch videos on-the-go. PLUS, it is a PHONE primarily. It has a iPod secondarily. Why people can't get this through their head, and want to put the iPhone down for not having 800,000 GBs when their own cells have maybe 256MB without expansion cards, I do not know.

8 Gigs is more than enough for me, especially since the ipod part of the iphone was not the main reason why i purchased the iphone. I cant see myself filling up all that memory anytime soon. Especially since i still have my macbook and ipod, i still have to use thoes gadgets for something, haha.

8gb is plenty here. Considering that I've only filled about 30gb of my 60gb iPod anyway!

I have two "sync modes" that I use ...

First is my general, around town/work/home mode. I have a playlist called "iPhone Normal Playlist" that has about 1,000 songs loaded into it. When I have that playlist sync'd, I also keep 2 movies sync'd, plus the last 1 episode of a couple TV shows and about a dozen podcasts.

However, when I travel, I change my profile around in just a few minutes to reflect my different needs when I'm on the road.

I unselect the "normal" playlist, and then select my "iPhone Travel Playlist" which is much lighter on music -- only about 250 of my favorite songs (out of the original 1,000). This frees up enough room, so that I can change the video sync to the last 3 episodes of my TV shows and podcasts ... which is how I like to spend my downtime while traveling, catching up on those.

It takes all of a minute or so to check or uncheck a few boxes to make this change, but the profile and usage of the device totally changes as a result!

Well, I can add that I'm happy to see that my 4GB ended up being more than enough, let alone if I had gotten the 8! I was one of the "got the 4 because they were out of the 8 folks", but the 4 is plenty for me.

I have a ton of music (45 GB) and used to have a 30-gig video, which was sadly stolen. In order to discipline myself (ha!) I decided I wanted an 8GB nano (and black is just sexy)...

I thought I would die of repetition, but I have a set of pretty complex smart playlist rules that keep switching in and out 8 GB of music I actually want to hear (mixed with stuff I haven't heard in a while, stuff that's new that I haven't heard enough, and some things that I haven't rated at all). It's amazing how well it works-- 8 GB really is enough, despite what I thought.

So, yeah.. I want an iPhone (I just wish the ringer was louder!)

I agree that 8gb is enough for now, it would be more convenient to have 30gb or more so I could ditch the iPod altogether.
I guess this would cannibalize iPod sales though. Maybe they could make the $ back by (don't hate me...) charging $100-$200 more for a 30-80gb iPhone???
(This way you would not ever need an iPod at all):)

Almost got the 4 GB but I spoiled myself a bit and got the 8 GB sure glad I did. I keep 2 movies, a couple tv show recent episodes, 400 songs, some pics and a few audio books and have a about 500 MB free. Don't really need anymore than this on there it would just be a waste. Besides if there is a song that isn't on it that I decide I want to hear I always keep my 80 GB video iPod handy  Only think that I would most like to see is a way to keep a couple spreadsheets and word docs on it and be able to do some minor editing to them.

8GB is OK for most situations.

However, I'll be flying cross-country in a few weeks, with a 1-2 hr layover each way. I figure with some downtime at my destination, I'll need roughly 15 hrs of movies for the trip, along with several hours of music.

The only way I see this happening, is to move all my music off the phone, which means I'll need to also take along my iPod (and a second power adapter, since my iPod is a 2G using a FW charger). So no, in this particular situation, 8GB IS NOT enough space. :(

Other that that, 8GB is plenty for my day-to-day use.

I don't think it's enough. I had a 15gb 3G iPod all them years ago and it didn't hold my whole library (17gb then, now 21gb). Now I have an 80gb and it holds all my music and a huge chunk of my videos too.

Thing is - I want a 1:1 mirror of my iTunes library wherever I go since my music taste changes throughout the day. I don't want to have to include "sort out iPod" when I'm getting ready to go out.
It's the same reason I bought an M3 Simply for my DS and dumped all my games to a single SD card.

They release a 16gb iPhone and I'll compress some of the very high bitrate stuff down. A 30gb would be absolutely perfect for me.

I bought the 4GB. Didn't think it was worth shelling out another $100 for more space while I have 2 other iPods at home (1GB Shuffle/30GB iPod).

Plus, I only have 4 podcasts (Only the new ones stay on the iPhone) and a few hundred songs. I'm usually busy working and when I do pull out the iPhone, it's for either a call, email, or the occasional checking the weather or stock market.

So yeah 4GB is plenty for me.

I have a 4 gig Nano and 40 gig iPod video so I knew that the 8 gig iPhone would more than suit my storage needs. I was right as I've only used half of the 8 gig on my iPhone so far. And it has everything I want on it . . . for now anyway

It's a PHONE?!?! I thought the iPhone was a multimedia device! Dammit. I've been listening to other people too much. I think it's interesting that for all that the phone does, pretty much the only thing some people talk about is how it doesn't have enough space to store every music track ever created. (this thread is a little different)

I myself don't quite understand the whole 40GB music library idea. Does anyone REALLY listen to that much music, or at least need all of it with them at all times? My total library is currently at 16.5GB, of which I listen regularly to about 4GB. The other stuff is just stuff that maybe once in a blue moon I pull up. Even at that, 16.5 GB is over ten straight days of music. Now, put that into a more realistic 8 hours of music listening a day and I get over 30 days of non-repeated music out of that. And people claim that they get bored of such a "small" library?

Of course, even being a gadget guy, I've also never been one of those people who has to have something to listen to or watch every waking moment of my life...so maybe that's why I don't get it.

No, I agree with you. I have something new to listen to every day on my iPod which is a 60GB video iPod. Podcasts, music, books....

....and yet I find I rarely need more than 2 - 3 GB on it. Maybe when I start using it in flight again for movies...

Eight is plenty. I am glad i didnt cheap out and get the 4. The 4 probably would have been enough, but we never know what updates this thing may get that the extra breathing room an 8 provides would be put to use.

I am retired, so I rarely fly any more. If I travel, I go by car, having plenty of time at hand. When I go on a long trip, I will burn a selection of CD's from my music library, and install them in my 6 CD player. I also carry along my XM radio.

I have a selection of playlists on my iPhone, some audiobooks and a movie, leaving more than 1 Gig free. If I was still working, I might feel differently, but as long as you are willing to do a little editing on your iPhone before traveling, 4 Gigs is plenty.

Off topic, I bought a Belkin case which was a bad move. I have found the best case to be the front pocket of my pants or shorts. Not scratched to date.

first of all, none of you should be using the iPhone as your primary source of music and entertainment, if you are, you're using it wrong. The iPhone in no way replaces all your other media devices. Yes it's fun to have everything in one place, but that doesn't mean you should disregard your iPods and DVD players, not yet at least.

Secondly, 8 gig is PLENTY right now, I have a bunch of things on there, most of them to show off as demos and I'm nowhere near filling it. Thinking about it, I find it funny that whatever capacity they come out with, people feel compelled to completely fill it, why is that? You don't get a prize for that. OOOOOHHH they came out with an 80gig iPod, I must scramble to find 80gig of media so I can fill it immediately. silly.

I suppose the more you talk yourself into it being enough space, the more it seems like it is.
