Can't unlock when no reception

My "slide to unlock" will not work when I don't have cell reception (like in the mountains camping). Is this normal? Is there a way around it?

No, this isn't normal. I'm assuming that you have already activated your phone.

I just spent three weeks traipsing around some remote places with no signal and listened to music much of the time.
