View Full Version : Facing the computer screen.
Does anyone here view the computer screen at an angle like me? I've been told that its probably not the best thing to do. But apart from looking to the side, I sit perfectly ergonomically. I sit with the entire lower part of my arms resting on the desk. And I sit up straight with my feet firmly on the floor...
Should I move my iMac so I'm facing it? My desk isn't that deep (60cm), so I'd lose the ability to rest my arms on the desk because the keyboard would be further forward, and I'd be much closer to the screen.

Yes.
And I hope you never spill a drink on your desk. ;)

Doesn't your neck get sore after a while?

Perhaps get a larger desk or bench and sit straight facing it.

Actually. Why don't you wall mount it?

I look to the side. I need to be able to talk to staff or visitors that come and sit in front of me, so it wouldn't really work if there was 30" of ACD masking my face.
Doesn't seem to cause me any problems. I'd say the angle is less severe than the one in the picture, and I also sit slightly angled towards it (hurrah for swivel chairs), but yeah, it's all good :)
Edit: Can you get rid of that strip of plugs? It's making me uneasy :D

It shouldn't matter as long as your comfortable... :)

Yeah that powerstrip being up there makes me nervous. Sort that out, will ya? :p
It seems odd to have that off to one side but if that's how you prefer it then so be it. I think facing it is better and if you're worried about desk space, wall mounting sounds like an idea.

You paid for wireless mouse and keyboard, but have mains power cables all over your desk?
(mutters something about mad dogs and englishmen, especially as these look like UK powerplugs)
You could put your keyboard at an angle too, then you'd be straightup.
Or install a sliding keyboard tray under your desk to give you more room.

Examine the picture more carefully, the wireless keyboard and mice have tails :O
I might re-situate the iMac, but then I'd have to have the wires dangling behind the desk.
Oh and as for the power lead, there is a reason for that, as you can see - one of the cables is going to the left, this is a second extension block with 6 sockets. I use my desk as more of a work bench, so I need the plugs.
I might get rid of this 2Meter by 60CM desk (6Foot6 x 2Foot) and get some deeper but not as wide desks, and join them together :)
IKEA is cheap after all...

I used to have my iMac at an angle like that but I find it much easier working with it in front of me because there's less head movement to the side that begins to kinda hurt your neck.

Isn't resting your wrists/forearms on the table bad for you?

No idea. Feels more comfortable to me...
Anyway, I sorted the issue now :D

Much better.
That's why God invented the LCD monitor. So that you don't have to be all 1990's and put the monitor on an angle because its too big for the desk.

Looks much better now :D But I'm wondering, why the heck do you have that mouse?
Because, this one is a nice mouse, and is the only mouse that is quiet on my desk (strange I know)
I dislike Mighty Mice & I'm too lazy to buy a new one :P I will one day
I need to find my fantastic Microsoft Intellimouse.

Good thing you switched. You might not have any problems now, but after they come, you'll being cursing at your old habits. I know I did. I changed my arrangement (cost me a good 130 sumthin') but it was well worth it. I haven't had backaches that were plagueing me for so long.
One more thing, when you rest your arms on the desk are they at a right angle to your body or somewhat extended? Having your arms higher than they should could lead to some pain later on. I used to do that with my old mac, I installed a keyboard tray and it's awesome, something you might want to consider. :D

I'm in a 5x5 closet, and I have a CRT monitor. It's just that my desk is two feet away from the wall. :p
