Gamecube, of course. IMHO there is nothing better.

oh yeah, and xbox sucks. :)

I have a Gamecube. I don't play it regularly, but I can be at it for hours when a game I like comes out (like Metroid Prime).

I like both my Gamecube and my Xbox, except my Xbox keeps freezing during gameplay and if I pause during DVDs it won't start up unless I turn it off and on now. I'd get it replaced, but I'd lose my precious Halo saves (beat it on legendary!) and all my Sim stuff. I had a PS2 but I sold it for $240 a few days before it had the price drop from $300 to $200...it's all about reading up on the rumors and knowing when to sell ;-) But yes, I voted for Xbox for one reason alone--Halo.

Man, that's kind of sad. Don't get me wrong, though. Halo's a great game and all, but I wouldn't go so far as to say that it's SO great that it alone carries a system over the shoulders of greats like the Playstation 2 and the Gamecube. Seriously, every time I hear an Xbox fan talk about the system all I ever hear mentioned is Halo. Are there any other games for that system that are actually good? :)

Its PPC architecture (AND I'm an ATI fan to boot) and its small size (think: college dorm) makes it a hit for me. And I love those Sonic and Star Wars games ;) I just can't get away from my childhood heh

There are lots more great games besides Halo, such as Wreckless, DOA3, Mechassault, PGR, Splinter Cell, The Sims, Brute Force, Metal of Honor, and so forth. I mentioned Halo because I am just about as addicted to it as one could be on a video game. Not to mention the Xbox doubles as a pretty decent DVD, has digital audio out and HDtv out (both of which I have--a 32 inch Samsung HDtv and a 600 watt Pioneer 6.1 surround sound) and the Xbox live broadband content which can be a hoot to play multiplayer with (just imagine Halo 2 with 16 player broadband deathmatches) and you get the picture. I love my Gamecube, my Dreamcast, my SNES, my NES, my Saturn, and loved my PS2 (even though my first one died and it took forever to get a replacement, plus that whole DVD region lawsuit when it came out), but I just cannot remember the last time I have been so blown away with the capability and game quality as I have been with the Xbox since it was released. Not to mention when I played NFL Fever, I have had people actually thinking it was an actual football game on tv until I paused it to get a drink. But yes, I stand by my previous statement--it's all about Halo, the original reason I bought the Xbox and only reason I bought the Xbox from the start.

As much as i tired of windows and left microsoft for the mac, i love my xbox. Great games, great graphics.

Here is my video system progression:

I went from pong, to atari 2600, to atari 600xl, to original nintendo, to sega genesis, added a super nintendo, Nintendo 64, and finally Xbox.

Had to many problems with sony products. Used to think they were the greatest but my stereo, vhs and dvd player were really bad so i won't be buying any more sony products.

I went with the GameCube. I feel the experience Nintendo has translates well through their innovative products. Plus, I love the GBA and with the newly released GameBoy Player, the GameCube is two systems in one!

And on a side note...I would imagine Mac fans would hate to ever own a Microsoft product. Especially one so horribly designed. But, I guess the hatred doesn't crossover into video games.

Generally speaking, Microsoft usually has solid hardware. I've had Microsoft joysticks, optical mice, keyboard, and now Xbox. Overall, their hardware is usually pretty high end and decently made. My Xbox does have it's share of problems, but I wouldn't doubt if it's due to my roommate dropping the thing behind the tv two years ago. I hate saying I like a Microsoft product, but you just can't deny they have decent hardware out there. Now if there were an Apple system...I may have to kick the Xbox out both out of principal and out of the fact that there's no way anything could compete with a G5 console (one could dream, right?)

I don't own a console and don't plan to get one. I've always thought of a console as a great idea for people who want to play games, but can't afford or don't want a computer. They can buy a comparatively cheap little box, and play games on it with guaranteed compatibility. The thing that really annoys me is when companies release games exclusively on a console (as opposed to also being available for computer). This defeats the purpose of what I described above. Obviously, my thinking is different from those of the game companies!

I put xbox even though it crashes all the time, and some games it just refuses to even play, but Halo alone IS enough to make it the number one system. I'm itching to see it on a g5, but yes after almost two years I feel like I could reproduce the game from memory. Microsoft was very smart to buy bungie, they couldn't have hurt mac gamers more. Its not like Apple couldn't have afforded them. But now at least I can play all the next gen fpsers that my imac dv could never run adequetely, and all I had to do was pay microsoft a few bills

Xbox Live also beats out any other online gaming experiances I've had lately. And I can say I've had more fun playing on my xbox than I ever have with video games before.

I hate microsoft, but not as much as I love bungie.

Gamecube is an awsome system, its nearly industructible, and I've seen games fall out of the system, and get popped back in without a hiccup in gameplay. my xbox would explode if you tried to take the game out while its on.

I'm hoping to get a GC soon...
gonna get the new xbox star wars game soon

latest game I've been playing on xbox was return to castle wolfenstein-loads of fun on xbox live

playstation 2 is nothing special.

Oh, and the gameboy advance sp is the first version of the gameboy I bought, and its fantastic, but I'm too embarrassed to tote it around with me, but I'll spend a few of the stonier hours playing it around the house if my hands don't cramp up. And I'll do this while neglecting my other system.

Now I that I think of it, I'm having trouble remembering the last time I played a game on my mac, let alone BOUGHT one. I think the last one was Age of Empires 2, a microsoft game. oh well. Mayhbe the ps3 will run on a 970, and be 100% compatable with apple computers of the same processor type.

Nothing comes close Nintendo's experience and attention to detail, in terms of quality and originality.

IMO they are the 'apple' of the gaming world. They may not have the most games, but the games they produce are exceptional (zelda, metroid prime, s. mario sunshine etc).

If you are looking at purchasing a games console, take it from me, dont look past the GameCube

I have a Gamecube wish I love, though I do not play games on regularly anymore. Long history of video games:
Several Ataris
Nintendo
Genesis
Super Nintendo
Game Gear
Playstation
N64
Gamecube

The Genesis and the 64 were actually my brothers, he has a PS2 now which has some fun games (dynastay warriors) but I still prefer my Gamecube. And those other boxes are just plain ugly....

I can emulate everything but the xBox on it (any computer, any console) and with a Dual G4 1Ghz (even a 700Mhz G3 really) it emulates VERY well...

Nintendo NES

Super Nintendo

GameBoy

Gameboy Advance

Virtual Boy

Playstation

PS2

Gamecube

Sega Saturn

Sega Genesis

N64

Apple IIe

Palm

Arcade games (MacMAME)

Atari

Intellivision

Colecovision

Pong/Oddessy

Plus there's tons of great versions of Mac ported games, then theres exclusive Mac games like Pangea stuff.

You can emulate PS2? I didn't think so...

My favorite console is, without a doubt, the PS2. Sure, it may not have quite as fancy graphics as the Xbox or the tiny size of the Gamecube, but it has the games I want to play, and it has the GREATEST GAME OF ALL TIME!

Namely, ICO. If you haven't heard of it/seen it/played it (the full thing, not the demo), I strongly encourage you to do so. The atmosphere and ambiance of this game is simply astounding. I, for one, hope the team at Sony is working on a sequel of sorts (rumors and Japanese magazine ads from ages ago indicated they were).

I used to think along those lines too, until I got a N64 a few years ago. Now have a GameCube and it's great.

I think gaming on a Console and on a Computer are very different things. With a console I sit on the sofa, and relax playing a game with a simple interface. I normally don't like 1st person shooters on consoles, although Metroid Prime changed my mind on this... With a Computer, the screen is closer and I don't mind if a game has lots of text or needs a more complex interface. Simulation and Strategic games play better on the computer.

Maybe latelty both worlds are joining, but I think Nintendo still knows what makes a good console game :)

Bungee is releasing Halo for the PC and I think it's MacSoft that will be porting it to the Mac simultaneously. I saw that tidbit either here on MacRumors or over at Macnn.

The best part is that the computer version of Halo will have higher resolution models and new levels.

Voted for GameCube myself, as it's stunning (I got one of the "special editions" with all-platinum look; plus very, very short load times - as with all Nintendo consoles, and some great games. Metroid Prime is still the most visually stunning game I've played.

I really like my Xbox too, particularly for Halo and Colin McRae Rally 3. Great graphics, but what an ugly box!

The PS2 obviously has the best selection of games, but seems (to me) to always have the longest load times, plus the controller does look a bit dated.

I still love my N64 though!

XBox with !Live

But it has been weak for all systems lately. I think this Christmas and the quarter following will be great, especially for X-box.

All I want is:

Halo 2 w/!Live
Fable w/!Live
Starcraft Ghost w/!Live
Doom III w/!Live
Half Life 2 w/!Live

I'll be set for the next 2 years with that ;)

I think the next poll should be Which System do you dispise the most, and then another on which ones you own (With Check Boxes instead of Radio)
And Since When was the GameBoy a Console, its a portable System for traveling, or screwing around at work/school.

Systems I Like (Good to Bad (Omitted some for simplicity)
GameCube
PS2
N64
SNES
Sega Genesis (w/CD&32X)
NES
Coleco
Any Atari
PSX
XBox

Systems I Own
PS2
N64
SNES
NES

Personally, The GameCube has a larger number of games (18+) That I'd like to Play, where as the PS2 has 3-5, and the XBox has 1.

Also, I used an XBox at College as a DVD Player, and Game system, and we had a GCN, and the DVD feature on the XBox was horrid, bad colors, and bad graphics, and we played the GCN for about 2 hours a night and couldn't get enough.

I added the Coleco, because I have a friend near Halifax, NS and He and I spend 3 days just playing every game for that thing, it was awesome.

I don't really care for either PS2 or xBox, I have a gamecube myself. I don't have enough games for it, because nobody around here hires teenagers under 17, but I have Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem which is killer. Just all of the awesome insanity effects are sweet. I'm sure it's out for xBox and PS2, but it's still a cool game. I have 007:Nightfire, mainly because since Microsoft bought RareWare we're never going to see the good 007 games anyway. I wanted Perfect Dark Zero so damn much. More than you can imagine. I am just so mad at Microsoft for doing that.

And yes, Nintendo is the Apple of the console gamer's market. I actually have a PSOne because I loved the RPGs and VGS wasn't working correctly. I have FF8, (FF7 for PeeCee, it actually runs in VPC), Chrono Cross, Xenogears, and they all fit my appetite for good RPGs. I still haven't beaten that stupid battle near the end of Xenogears which no FAQ or Walkthrough can get you through, though.

And, for the record, Chrono Trigger is still the greatest RPG ever made. Because Bob Dole said so.

I've got a 'cube. I don't have many games for it, nor do I play it all that often, but when I do it's great fun. I keep it around when I can't suffer through the really bad frame rates on my iMac DV (400Mhz :p).

Console?!? Psh... who needs a console when you can have a GBA!!!

I've played extensively on the "modern" game systems and I must say that the XBox kicks ass solely because of Halo. The PS2 just has tons of games, and the controller is nice, but the GC for a console is great, and nothing beats a party with Super Smash Bros. Melee (or just a '64 with Smash Bros.)

I've owned a GBA since they were released, and I must say I have enjoyed every day of it. Portable, nice, long battery life, and with the Gameboy SP out, backlit :D

Of course its nothing but a souped up and glorified SNES, but its portable and you can carry it around. It takes the cake.

That and the best RPG is GBA only (Golden Sun, and Golden Sun:The Lost Age (Which is part 2 of the story, not a sequel))

Well worth the $95 CDN I spent on those games.

I do love my GBA SP. That is probably my favorite modern console. The only problem I saw with the regular GBA was the lack of a built-in light. My personal purchase was the GC (Zelda and Metroid).

My favorite is the PS2. Plays my old PS games, as well as a backup dvd player. Slick form factor that stacks well with other components. Frickin' huge game library. Linux option is something I would like to try. Thankfully my roommate bought one, so I get to use it! Gran Tourismo 3 is still my favorite game, after all these years. Can't wait for GT4 to be here... :D

I have played some XBOX, but the games available when I bought the GC (about 1 yr ago) were pretty weak. There is more to life than HALO, but there isn't much more to the XBOX than HALO. The car racing games in particular are very weak.

Xbox is my favorite (even though I voted no preference) simply because of Halo and Halo 2 (which would have been for the Mac if it weren't for Bill). Besides that I have no preference.

But let me tell you, my Xbox is basically broken and the controllers barely work, I'll be getting another one specifically for Halo 2. I'm going to paint it silver with a couple of green stripes in random places. Then place an Apple sticker over the Xbox logo. And I'll do the same thing with the controllers, silver with stripes, take out the Xbox Logo, and replace it with an Apple Logo.

PS: Gamecube is awesome, and if I don't whats described above, I'll simply wait until I can play it on my Mac. (halo and Halo 2)

Ps2 all the way! even though its slow, they have the biggest selection of games for the recent game conscols. the xbox controllers (the origionals at least) are gigantic and they are made by microsoft (evil). and gcn has cruddy graphics and can't play dvd's. I herd a rumor that apple was going into the gaming buisness, but on the same page, a picture of the iphone was there. wouldn't that be cool if Apple came out with a gaming console? if they came out with something like that, i'd buy that and vote for them, but untill them go crash bandicoot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have to give my nod to the Dreamcast. It really is not much worse than PS2, etc., and I still play it all the time. I love the SegaSports games.

2 Original Gameboys (spilled OJ on 1)
SNES
Virtual Boy (more potential than anything)
N64 (Goldeneye baby!)
PSONE (I need my FF Tatics)
Gameboy Color

After that I ghad a car and all my money went to keep the rust bucket going.

I do love the xbox through. How else can you get a really good piece of hardware that costs M$ hundreds of dollars more than what you pay for it. I'm waiting for Halo 2 for me to get one.

Heh. Sonic on GameCube. That just seems wrong. Like Mario on the PlayStation. But since Sega is no longer making game consoles, I guess they had to do something with their franchises.

As far as game consoles, I never really had one as a kid (no Atari or Nintendo), so I never got into them too much. My brother, however, has (or had) quite a few: Gameboy, Nintendo, Super Nintendo, Nintendo 64, PlayStation, PS2, Sega Genesis. The only console systems that I ever really played were the Atari 2600 (original) and the Atari 7800. They had joysticks, not as good as arcade ones, but they were workable. Now all consoles come with pads. Pads are what I buy for my wife, not what I play games with. I hate the pad controller more than I hate laptop touchpads (and I have an optical USB mouse handy so that I never have to deal with that). I would buy a console if:
1) I could play something with joystick and keyboard or keyboard and mouse.
2) I could download extra maps, weapons (for fps), or mods (very important to me).
3) If I became so completely computer illiterate that I couldn't deal with computer games on a real computer.
4) If the prices on the games dropped at the same rate as their PC counterparts.
5) Most importantly if most games I want to play were excusive to them. I love the new D&D games, like Neverwinter, most FPS games (keyboard and mouse), Flight Sims (flightstick and keyboard), and some racing games (in the arcade only), and the PC versions are all better than the console versions I have seen other people playing. I don't like Mario, or the elf guy, or Final Fantasy style games. Maybe if Mario could be equipped with a rocked launcher.... At one point I was interested in Halo. However the timely release of the PC version was promised (so much for the promises of a sell-out). At this point I am more interested in Doom 3.
6) There was some sort of standard. I can run every PC game I have ever bought on my Althon, my P3, my K6-2, and some old ones on my G4 with VPC.

I have many machines, a Quicksilver, an Athlon, an iMac, a P3, etc. I have roomates that have more. There is nothing in console land that can compare with firing up all 5 Althons, the 2 Pentium 3s, the G4 (if the game is ported), the iMac (if the game is old) and having a lan party. We play a bunch of Ghost Recon, Red Faction, Unreal Tournament & 2003, Warcraft, Starcraft, Alien vs. Predator, Medal of Honor, Splinter Cell, etc. Almost all games are played with maps downloaded from the net for no additional cost. Some games notably Ghost Recon are heavily modded with new weapons. We all play using keyboard and mouse, and joystick for Descent and Mechwarrior. All of the games allow for custom keyboard set-ups. All of the games look better than their console variants (Television is limited resolution to about 300 lines) A crappy monitor will do 640 lines. Unlike consoles, if the game needs more power (I have seen a few that are choppy on a console), a computer can be upgraded (as some of the machines were for UT 2003).

Basically there needed to be an option for either "I don't like consoles", or PC or Mac. My Althlon 2100 is basically a glorified game console. There are some things it used to do that my mac would not. It would play some video files from the net that no mac player would, Mplayer for OSX will play anything windows applications will. Kazaa wasn't ported, except that now poisoned will connect to Kazaa (fasttrack) networks and download stuff. I cannot think of much else, however the remaining thing I have the Windows machine for is games. Which is virtually all that I use it for. I do still run Kazaa K++ on it, however there is virtually no other software on the machine.

iPC, I strongly reocmmend you check out Apex and Project Gotham 1 before you say xBox car racing is weak. Project Gotham 1 was a rushed game, yet the graphics on the vehicles are undeniably impressive. Apex is about a potential ride towards the future of vehicle/racing schemes.

Bunzi2k4, just because the xBox is made by MS doesn't make it intelligent to avoid the xBox. That is a rather nasty pet peeve of mine, and I would suspect of a lot of xBox users.

I noticed that at least six other forum members do not support the xBox for other reasons (large console, large controllers, etc.). But disrespecting the xBox just because it is from Microsoft is a rather prejudiced thing to say.

Favorite consoles: N64 and xBox.

I would have gotten GameCube, but only the Japanese version supports DVDs. PS2 didn't win me over because of the specs that I checked out. The only game I like on PS2 is Grand Theft Auto 3, but I'm not spending $200 for a PS2 and the game.

Now if it was supported for either the Mac platform of the xBox I would be happy.

I have a PS2 now, it doubles as my home DVD and lets the wife play Sims and Theme Park World, plus Tiger Woods 2003 and Colin McCrae 3, I get to play The Getaway and Pro Evolution Soccer with the lads.

All my beloved FPS get played on the Mac, as do things like Myth etc.

I used to use a 3DO, good hardware, NO games...:D

Well Icebreaker may have been the most addictive game ever written, I still hook the 3DO up occasionally just to play that.;)

I guess it was only a matter of time before someone brought up the Pippin.

Although I voted for GameBoy Advance SP I do not think it belongs on the same ballot as those other consoles; that is like comparing cars to motorbikes. Having said that, I would rather be playing Doom on the GBA SP than Halo on the XBox. SNES classics like Final Fight and Super Ghouls & Ghosts work great on the portable format as well.

It was too bad the DreamCast did not make the list. That was in my opinion the most complete console ever: great AAA-quality games (including the best version of Daytona USA ever), good 3D graphics, internet capabilities as standard, VGA connectivity, four control ports, good joypad design and a proprietry disc format that discouraged casual pirates. I was hoping that SEGA would re-enter the portable arena with its own hardware but I guess with Sony's PSP on the horizon that will never happen.
