If you like kind of ambient, instrumental music (pretty good for distance driving/random thinking/time wasting) check out:
El Ten Eleven - El Ten Eleven
El Ten Eleven - Every Direction is North
The Mercury Program - A Data Learn the Language
The Mercury Program has other albums but this is the only one I've extensively listened to. All three of those are on iTMS, too.

I'll start some albums off for ya, though you haven't given any guidelines:
Kenna - "New Sacred Cow"
Sufjan Stevens - "Illinoise" (really every Sufjan Album though  )
Death Cab For Cutie - "Transatlanticism"
Tarkio - "Omnibus"
Medeski, Martin & Wood - "Combustication", "End Of The World Party (Just In Case", "It's A Jungle In Here", "Shack Man"
The Postal Service - "Give Up"
Return To Forever - "Where Have I Known You Before
Sigur Rós - "Takk..." (though you cannot go wrong with them)
The Whitest Boy Alive - "Dreams"
Then there's Bob Dylan. Robert Zimmerman is amazing in his 40+ year career, writing some of the most memorable and historic songs ever in American culture. You cannot go wrong with any of these albums, they all offer different spectrums of his ever-changing style and/or historical songs and I adore (Though I adore every Dylan album in its own way :) ):
Bob Dylan - "Another Side Of Bob Dylan" , "Bob Dylan" , "Blonde On Blonde" , "Bringing It All Back Home" , "The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan", "Good As I Been To You", "Live At The Gaslight 1962 (if you have to pick only a few, pick this as one), "New Morning", "Nashville Skyline", "Street Legal", "The Times They Are A-Changin' ", .... it goes on and on.

Youll either love or hate these selections, but they are in my opinion the most talented bands and individuals out there right now...and if you really disagree you have not seen Chris Thile (http://youtube.com/watch?v=tu-62qWjaHw) play pieces of J.S Bach on the mandolin live...but anyways here are my suggestions to you...
Nickel Creek (http://youtube.com/watch?v=lzwR4V_PXj4)-the album "Why Should the Fire Die"
Chris Thile & The How to Grow a Band (Mandolinist of Nickel Creek, awsome solo albums such as, "Deciever", and "How to Grow a Woman From the Ground")
Sean Watkins (guitar player of Nickel Creek, also has awsome solo albums such as, "26 Miles", and "Blinders On")
Patrick Watson- the album "Close to Paradise"
Andrew Bird-the album "Armchair Apocrypha"

Wired All Wrong - Break Out The Battle Tapes
Keane - Under The Iron Sea
The Faint - Wet From Birth
Hot Hot Heat - Make Up The Breakdown
Ima Robot - Monument To The Masses (First 5 songs off the album)
Living Things - Ahead Of The Lions (Bom Bom Bom, God Made Hate)
If your road trip is to be at some considerable speed, any Rage Against the Machine works very well. Otherwise;
Happy Mondays - Pillsn'thrills'n'bellyaches, or even better Squirrel & G-man
Kaiser Chiefs - Employment
Snow Patrol - Eyes Open
Barenaked Ladies - Maroon
The Levellers - Green Blade Rising
Tracy Chapman's good for mile munching too
If you do political, Chumbawamba (Tubthumper and UN are the best) and David Rovics (you can download free on soundclick) are great

Before you die, definitely listen to the soundtrack for the movie Amelie, most of the music is by Yann Tiersen. The music on that album is so inventive and well constructed it blows my mind.
I listen to a variety of stuff... here are some others to check out:
Jawbox - Novelty
Metric - Live It Out
Mos Def - Black on Both Sides
Sunny Day Real Estate - Diary
both albums by "The Most Secret Method"
Hot Water Music - Forever & Counting

Counting Crows - This Desert Life
Counting Crows are often considered a really commercial poppy band, but this album shows what they're really like. Listening to this album all the way through is a quite weird experience. Get to know it, and once you do, sit down and listen all the way through on a good system, and you'll see what bliss is.
Fleetwood Mac - Rumours
Again, another group who are often considered to be trash-rock. Sadly, they did get a bit trashy towards the end of their careers, but this album is them in their golden era. Truly a remarkable album and absolutely one of my favourites.
Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
No need to mention who this is by. Probably the most important album in history. Still an absolute dream to listen to.
Vaughan Williams - The Lark Ascending
Amazing piece of music. Well leave you soooooooo chilled out you wouldn't believe it.
Pink Floyd - Dark Side Of The Moon
Probably second in the list from Sgt. Pepper's as the most influential and important albums in the history of music. Amazing experience to listen to all the way through, really takes you to some incredible places.
Radiohead - The Bends
Stunning album. I wish I hadn't been 5 years old when this album first came out, as it really must have been something else to listen to.
Radiohead - OK Computer
A stunning (and IMO superior) follow-up to The Bends. Really amazing soundscapes and puts some fantastic messages across.
Sibelius - Finlandia
One of the most fantastic pieces of music ever, IMO! Incredibly moving, so much so that it was banned due to the uprisings it caused.
Boards of Canada - Geogaddi
I recently bought this on Vinyl, and it honestly is the most amazing thing I've heard emanating from my stereo. Incredibly relaxing, and 'Corsair' is the most played thing in my iTunes library (1200+ plays).
Adam F - Colours
The album which invented Drum 'n Bass, but did it with style. Amazing soundscapes and very, very very stylish!
Bob Marley & The Wailers - Exodus
The most important reggae album of all time! Essential music...
Those are some of my top albums, but there are so many others.
What you should do, is get SimplifyMedia, and add as many people as you can as friends. My screen name is 'killyp', and you can have a listen to my iTunes library. :)

Yes, but which version of the hundreds available ;)
My choice(s) would be:
Neeme Järvi: Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra (With original chorus ending)
or
Herbert von Karajan: Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra…

I've been thinking about getting a Glass symphony, and don't know enough to pick wisely. Are there different recordings of this that are superior to others?
I bought a Goreki symphony I like, but the recording wasn't as good as one I heard on the radio - but I like it well enough that I haven't upgraded.
Occasionally, I have to choose for my single album example. For example, I wanted a Jimi Hendrix album, and found two that were almost perfect - but one had "Purple Haze" and the other had "The Star Spangled Banner".

Glass' 3rd Symphony isn't too bad. There is a recording conducted by Russell Davies: Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra.
Personally, I would start with the Violin Concerto with Gideon Kremer.

It's really a tossup between this, Revolver, and Abbey Road for me. All really amazing albums.
Vaughan Williams - The Lark Ascending
Amazing piece of music. Well leave you soooooooo chilled out you wouldn't believe it.
I'm partial to both Fantastia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis or Five Variants of Dives and Lazarus, but The Lark Ascending does seem to be more popular than either.

Philip Glass - Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters
Garbage - Version 2.0
I'd have gone with Koyannisqatsi, Powasqatsi and Naqoysqatsi for Philip Glass.
And the 1st Garbage ablum is a lot better than v2.0.
To add to the above 4:
Mule Variations - Tom Waits (Unless Orphans counts)
I'm Your Man - Leonard Cohen
Hypocrisy Is The Greatest Luxury - Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy
Paul's Boutique - Beastie Boys
Pretty Hate Machine - Nine Inch Nails
Nothing's Shocking - Jane's Addiction
Debut - Björk
Doolittle - The Pixies
I could keep going but I'll stop there...

I thought the "I have gone with" bit would have suggest it was my opinion....
Music in 12 parts might scare him away:)
It's quite difficult to recommend music without having good knowledge of a persons tastes, but these are my favorites right now, and yes I do realize they are all over the place...
Brand New - Deja Entendu (All their other albums are a bit weak imho)
Jack's Mannequin - Everything in Transit (Maybe Something Corporate if you like the style, same singer)
Good Charlotte - Good Morning Revival (Haven't listed to the other albums yet)
Mae - Destination Beautiful
Rise Against - Siren Song of the Counter Culture & The Suffer and the Witness (Great songs, but unfortunately quite a bit of filler content)
+44 - When Your Heart Stops Beating

Aug 4, 2007, 12:50 PM
Smashing Pumpkins is my favorite band
Adore: truly a unique album, still ahead of its time, unappreciated, just beautiful. Highlight: 'For Martha'. Listen to it late at night, all the way through.
Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness: one of the most epic, daring cds ever as far as I'm concerned. Ranges from heavy metal, to classical-inspired songs. Highlight: 'And Ode To No One'
Saying that, "Siamese Dream" is still my favorite cd of theirs.
Otherwise:
Nine Inch Nails - The Downward Spiral (very organic sounding industrial. Highlight: 'March of the Pigs')
U2 - Achtung Baby (it's good ole U2 but in their best form. Highlight: 'One')
Depeche Mode - Songs of Faith & Devotion (good, emotional, spiritual album. Highlight: 'Mercy In You')
Elton John - Goodbye Yellow Brick Road (peppy album, Highlight: Grey Seal)
Green Day - American Idiot (an instant classic, Highlight: Boulevard of Broken Dreams)
Guns N' Roses - Appetite for Destruction (this album rocks hard, Highlight: My Michelle)
Korn - Self-Titled (pretty weird music, quite unique, Highlight: Blind)
Previously Mentioned
The Cure - Disintegration
Pink Floyd - The Wall
Any Tool cd
More recently, I thought The Dixie Chicks - Taking The Long Way is a really good cd. Great vocals.

Hi all. This is my first post here!
Albums I'd recommend to everyone:
Biffy Clyro: Blackened Sky
Interpol: Antics
Muse: Origin of Symetry
The Shins: Chutes Too Narrow
Bright Eyes: Digital Ashes in a Digital Urn
Jeff Buckley: Grace
Biffy Clyro: Vertigo of Bliss
Silversun Pickups: Carnavas
Then go chill with some Boards of Canada and realise you've heard them before watching Top Gear and that Mercedes ad with the car turning into water, lol.
All of these bands albums are worth checking out I'd say.

As always, everyone else is wrong and I am right. So listen up (pun).
Radiohead - OK Computer (I'd actually suggest all 6 albums)
The Doors - The Doors (Again, all 6 Albums really)
Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin IV
Notorious B.I.G. - Ready To Die
Simon & Garfunkel - The Essentials
Sublime - 40 oz to Freedom
RJD2 - Dead Ringer
These are in no particular order.
IMO (which is always right), Radiohead is the best of this generation and i would strongly suggest getting their discography (Hail to the Thief, Kid A, OK Computer, The Bends, Pablo Honey, and Amnesiac).

I'd have to say "Rodrigo y Gabriela" (it's both the band and their current CD) has really expanded my musical boundaries. They actually just released a live recording session on iTunes, but they are two guitarists from Mexico, but what makes them amazing is that they, along with their guitars, play not only the melodies, but also do all of the percussion right on the instruments. It's amazing to see and hear- check them out on youtube.
I have also recently fallen in love with a hispanic (actually, Colombian) artist named "Juanes". He's also on iTunes, but he has become an international singing sensation, but he never caught on in the US. He sings only in spanish, but check out his songs "La Camisa Negra" and "A dios le pido". He also did a couple songs with Nelly Furtado- "Te Busque" (Nelly's Loose album) and "fotografia" (One of Juanes's albums- Mi Sangre, I think).
Enjoy!

Interesting thread so far! I think this will run and run, or at least 'til the gas runs out..
However, I might have missed it, but 3 pages and no-one has mentioned Bach????
For fun and exuberance;- The Brandenburg Concertos, but for Music you will probably hear AFTER you die, then for me it's the B-Minor Mass.
I'm not in the slightest bit religious, but this music is about as close to a "Proof of God's existence" as exists in the world!
Just sublime...

This is going to be fun.
Arcade Fire - Funeral. This album is wonderful. Enough said.
David Bowie - Low, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders From Mars. The first of these two albums, Low, is probably one of my top five favorite albums, and at least top ten. You need to listen to it to really understand. Ziggy Stardust is a pure rock classic in itself.
Ladytron - Light & Magic. Electropop rules. Ladytron is amazing.
Muse - Absolution, Origin of Symmetry. Muse rules.
Nine Inch Nails - The Downward Spiral, The Fragile. I personally like The Fragile more of the two by a little bit, these days, but they're both very good albums. Trent Reznor's awesome.
Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here. I slowly moved away from the rest of Floyd's stuff, in the past year or so (although I still listen to their other stuff every now and then, just nowhere near as much). Wish You Were Here is their best album, in my eyes.
Placebo - Without You I'm Nothing. Another great album. Similar to Muse in some ways, or at least are a modern equivalent when doing searches for similar artists.
Porcupine Tree - Stupid Dream. Great progressive rock band. Even greater album.
Radiohead - The Bends, OK Computer, Kid A, Amnesiac, Hail to the Thief. Yes. I love Radiohead. It's pretty obvious if I'm recommending their last five albums. The band themselves pretty much hate Pablo Honey (primarily "Creep", as is well known; it's a rare chance these days to see them play it). However, if I were to pick only one of these, it would be Kid A. It's an album that is very unlikely to be equaled in quite some time. My personal favorite album.
The Who - Who's Next. I'm not a huge fan of the Who overall, but every song on this album is great.
Thom Yorke- The Eraser. Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke's first "solo" album. Really wonderful stuff. Sticks to his love for electronic music. Very little guitar use, but spectacular nonetheless.
Tool - Lateralus. If you like hard, hard rock, this album by Tool's the way to go.
I might add more later.

Gotta second this recommendation, though their new album, Fear of a Blank Planet, and Deadwing are also fantastic in my opinion.

I'm subject to the "No True Scotsman" fallacy with regards to Country Music. If it's good (according to my tastes), then it must not be country. I'm so guilty of this that I was surprised when Ray Charles was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. (I was quite a bit younger in 1970, and more sure of myself). It did open my mind to recognize that *lots* of good music was in that genre that I overlooked.
That said, a forum like this is useful for someone to become more complete in his tastes.

Have you ever listened to Ella sing "Mack the Knife" from Berlin 1960?
If you havent check it out. There isnt a singer today, or from the past that can come close to her talent.
She was a great person in real life unlike the scum bags today dropping music.

English Settlement - XTC
XTC were always one of pop's finest moments. If this album included Dear God then it would probably be the best album ever made.
Some Girls Wander By Mistake - The Sisters of Mercy
I always hesitate to include compilations in 'Best Album' lists because, by definition, they weren't composed as albums, but there are so many good songs on here that encapsulate an important band at their finest, that I have to include this over any of the Sisters' studio albums.
Thunder and Consolation - New Model Army
If you don't love this album unconditionally by the time you've listened to it twice, then you either have no soul, or you've been in a coma for a couple of decades. NMA always showed the gift of being able to marry righteous fury to a damn fine tune, and with this album they delivered the record that their fans always knew they were capable of. Don't bother with the "remastered" 2-CD set, just get the untainted original and be in awe.
Talk Talk Talk - The Psychedelic Furs
Post-punk's finest. This album is plucked fairly arbitrarily from a fine catalogue by virtue of having been a constant companion at a bad time in my life, and for having the original version of "Pretty in Pink" on it. Just listen to this track and you'll realize how badly the movie missed the intent of the song ...
The Nephilim - The Fields of the Nephilim
Unfairly confined to the ghetto of "Gothic" categorization, The Nephilim is one of the most underrated albums in the entire rock genre.
Put this album on without the prejudice of a genre stereotype, and I guarantee that from the pounding, hypnotic opening drums, to the epic, mesmerizing album closer of 'Last Exit', you won't regret hearing this.
With one important exception! Rip the album to iTunes (or media management software of choice) and then discard the track 'Shiva' ...
The track itself is neither particularly good or bad, but, back in the day, the record companies used to stick "bonus" tracks onto CDs to convince people that it was worth paying about double the price of a vinyl album, and putting two slow-tempo tracks one after the other in a place that all but breaks the back of this album borders on vandalism!
St Julian - Julian Cope
Nothing short of sublime. Always a toss-up for me with the subsequent Jehovakill, but this album never, ever fails to put a smile on my face, if only for World Shut Your Mouth.
Liquidizer - Jesus Jones
Quite possibly ten of the best pop songs you will ever hear. There is no filler, not an ounce of fat on this album. Much as with English Settlement above, if this album only included their later track International Bright Young Thing it would be entirely perfect.
Please ... listen to at least one of the above. I guarantee you won't be sorry.
Cheers
Jim

But this thread has a great function in introducing people to music of a genre that they want to have good representative music. With this in mind, compilations can be the best way to start.
But please, everybody - tell us what genres your samples represent. In a "great" album, we will already know - if we have been fans of that genre already. But I want to say "I've been meaning to listen to some of that kind of music - but I am too ignorant to know what is worth while", but use your expertise to discover the best of what I have been missing.
