I have a Macbook and an iBook. I updated Macbook with Intel 10.4.10 combo update which went smooth.

I also updated the iBook with 10.4.10 PPC combo update. Now, I dont see the Finder Menubar items (like Airport, QuickSilver, Volume/battery indicators). Even when I manually enable (like "Show Airport in Finder") I dont see them at all ..

I have tried fixing perms, re-installing teh update etc.. still no go .. please help

Try deleting/moving/renaming /Users/<you>/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systemuiserver.plist (and maybe /Users/<you>/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.systemuiserver.<gibberish>.plist) and restart, and see if they reappear (you may need to re-add them).

Did you modify it at all. You said quicksilver. I would load up the install disks or 10.4 disk if you have it. You can choose to do an archive and install, which should fix the problem and keep all your documents, apps and what not in place.

Thanks for the help guys ..

"Try deleting/moving/renaming /Users/<you>/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systemuiserver.plist (and maybe /Users/<you>/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.systemuiserver.<gibberish>.plist) "
but none of these helped. I deleted both the files

Also, I tried creating a new user .. and when I login as him, he too has the same issue ..

Also, I noticed this .. I see that the menubar is not completely rendered on the right end. (instead of being curved, it is straight)

I dont have the luxury of reinstalling :'(

Weird...

Are you running any haxies, themes or anything like that...?

I was running ShapeShifter. I uninstalled that too .. so no more shapeshifter (though it was installed while I did the update). I tried applying the combo updater after the uninstaller. Still the same issue.

Ok, I have only one suggestion left: Have you tried resetting the PRAM (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238)?

And what happens if you try without MenuMeters running at all?

I removed menumeteres, rebooted same issue
booted into safe mode : same issue
booted into safe mode, reinstalled the combo update: same issue

I see the finder menubar's curved shape for as few secs, till I open anything (even finder) after which the curved menubar becomes straight on the right.

Something is wrong with systemUIserver ... but I need more help from you all to sort this.

I dont want to re-install for the following reasons:
1. Its a mac running OS X .. I dont want it to behave like windows (and I dont want to resinstall like in the windows world)
2. I think it is fixable without a reinstall

It probably is possible to fix without a reinstall, but very often an Archive and Install (which doesn't touch your data or most settings) is much faster than digging through the depths of the system for what Shapeshifter (or something else) has broken, especially considering you've already tried most of the wonder cures™ available...

Yup. I have just taken all the backups ... I am going to reinstall now ..

(I am crying inside loudly .. this box has not had a reinstall in > 2 years)

thanks guys.

so, I cleaned up the disk and reinstalled the OS and applied the combo update again. It worked like a charm this time.

(of course, my install disk was bad .. had to make an image out of it, and re-burn the image into a new DVD and reinstall) ..

Thanks all
