View Full Version : Deodorants that don't destroy shirts

I have yet to find an antiperspirant/deoderant that doesn't do some kind of damage to my shirts, despite claims of "won't leave residue," etc.

Ban roll-on: Leaves dark spots

Most regular stick deoderants: Leave caked white goo (which sometimes sparkles silver under the right light, which is aluminum dust I suppose).

"Invisible" gels leave dark spots

Mitchum Smart Solid: Better than others I've tried, but still seeing a bit of discoloration.

There's no solution for this problem, is there? I'll have to just keep replacing shirts....or maybe just stink :o...Any advice appreciated.

Never had a problem (that I've noticed). Silly question, but I assume you let the deoderant dry before you put on a shirt...?

Body Shop deodorant for me - if you have the Body Shop over there.

Or else go for a deodorant that's not an anti-perspirant.

Mennen Speed Stick deordorant (not anti-perspirant!).

The arrid extra dry gel doesn't seem to have too much of that problem, but I have only been using it for a couple of weeks so far. If only Apple would put all of their resources into their Anti-perspirant department!

I'm with you... after a while, the pit sticks build up on a shirt until the shirt is ruined.

I've been using some plain ol' **** spray deoderant and that doesn't leave white marks or anything messy like that.

I use Old Spice (high endurance)... it's clear with no buildup.

How much deodorant are you putting on? I've really never had a problem with deodorant ruining a shirt.

I used Tom's of Maine deodorant and haven't had a problem. It's a clear stick type. So no chalk residue and doesn't seem to take as long as the clear gel types do.

I never really had much of a problem with the gel types when I used those, just make sure you give it time to dry before putting on your shirt.

I'm guessing that this is a US-centric problem. There's not much in the way of aerosol anti-perspirants over there from what I remember. They reckon the aluminium content causes Alzheimers or something. It's pretty much all roll-ons, sticks and gels. The only canned product I found was a powdered talc spray.

Anti-perspirants are bad for your skin. Go with a PitRok (http://www.pitrok.co.uk/) crystal. No marks on your clothes and even though you sweat it doesn't ever turn to BO smell.

The crystals stopped working for me years ago, hippie. :D

I was at dillards yesterday and the old lady saleswoman (who I have dealt with for years) Asked "Are you enjoying the hot weather?" I said, "Yeah, but my armpits are not." My girlfriend got mad. wtf? :)

Old Spice High Endurance has never marked a shirt in the time I've been using it (4 years?).

Its ingredients are also more friendly than, say, your average antiperspirant, it's basically antibacterial bar soap with fragrance. Quite gentle, but it holds up well in hot weather. :)

Thats the exact reason I stopped using High Endurance. It stained my favorite shirt all of a sudden I used it for years, almost as long as I can remember. But I think somewhere along the line, they changed it a little.

I've been using Mitchum gel for 3 years now, without any problems. I used to use dry stick deodorant, but the clumps that formed were disgusting. Nothing worse than going to scratch you armpit and ending up with fingernails full of pasty clumps of deodorant. Prior to dry sticks I used roll-ons, but those always destroyed my shirts. I can't use spray-ons at all, especially that Axe stuff. The butane gives me a rash.

Well there is another path

If your armpit sweating it a tad excessive get Botox injections

4 months of non sweaty armpits. and it means you dont need to use deodorant. Just washing in the morning leaves you smelling sweet all day.

What is botox injections?

The same stuff people get injected in their face to remove wrinkles.
But if you inject into sweat gland areas it paralyses the glands and no sweating. Combine no sweating with no armpit hair = clean smell and no need for deodarants.
expensive but lasts 4-6 months.
A colleague of mine with very sweaty hands had it done and now his handshake is much more pleasant.

Arm pits and hands are the two most common sites for this kind of botox treatment - just google it.

yes I do but some people sweat too much,
and when your palms are so sweaty that latex gloves slip off and nobody wants to shake you hand , i think thay botox helps alot.

The armpits - some people are excessive sweaters. as in no amount of anti-perspirant will stop the waterfall that drenches the shirts.

i have noticed it is quite easy to tell which of my female colleagues have shaved armpits - they dont have such a strong B.O.

I really hate when people cover up smelly armpits with deoderant. Was your armpits, dry them, then put on anti perspirant and you will smell good.

yes I bolded dry them because many people forget to. and just create the perfect moint environment for bacteria to grow and create stinky smell.
same with feet.

I use Lacoste Style in Play and it leaves no residue and it smells delicious!

I don't use anti-perspirant because I figure if my body needs a sweat, I should let it. It knows best.

I don't get body odor unless I'm sweating like a pig, and then only in my right armpit for some reason.

So usually I don't have to wear deodorant.

You could try a spray, unless it irritates your skin. You could wear cologne to mask the scent and smell even better than normal. Like suggested before, wearing a proper undershirt (white t-shirt, not tank top) is a good idea too. Then you can go to town with your anti-perspirant.

Also, if you're up for it, think about shaving your armpits. A lot of men are doing it these days. I'm thinking about it myself. Or at least trim. No one should think that armpit hair is attractive. It reduces odor and it's nice for the ladies (and yourself too). It'll probably itch a bit for the first week or so but after that it's gravy. Moisturize after shaving.

I'm a normal guy, but I do get a bit of "build up" on my undershirts over time, usually I toss them out and buy new, but after reading this thread does anyone know how to remove or wash out this built up mess from white cotton t-shirts? Seems like you could.

Wish I could call my mom about this ..... no she's not dead, just doesn't have an answer.

Definitely shave your armpits guys, that really cuts down on odor.

My white shirts get stains on them but I have to wear them a lot before that happens and by time it gets to that point I just buy a new shirt that's crisp and white looking again. Otherwise I never really have a problem (use Arrid XXDry) that I have noticed.

Might be. Nothing I've tried works for me either. Luckily I don't really stink even if I sweat, so long as I shower. Which I do. I like the gels better than the sticks because they don't gunk up as much, and roll-ons do in a pinch, but no spray for me. Just don't like them. Arrid and Mitchem are good, Arm & Hammer works pretty well too. I like the smell of some Gillette and Old Spice too, but some are a little too strong and don't do much in the way of sweat prevention. But it's going to be hot, and I'm going to sweat. Especially if I'm hauling around servers in the hot sun, up and down stairs. Sometimes, for some reason, I sweat even if it's cold. I don't know why. Just happens. Sometimes I'm just dry as a bone. Weird.

Lots of Resolve and Spray & Wash help with the stains, but nothing really gets them out.

When I'm going out I use the crystal. I'm quite blessed in that my pits don't tend to smell for some reason (and that's not just me saying it, others agree), although I do sweat quite a bit. It probably means bacteria find me too nasty to breed on or something :o

I personally think it's preferable to trim underarm hair with a buzzer instead of shaving it with a razor. I've heard that if you shave with a razor your skin can absorb the nasty bad things in the anti--perspirants. I trim every once in a while with a body groom. http://www.shaveeverywhere.com

I don't shave my pit hair because I naturally don't have a lot of it. I prefer simple grooming of body hair over shaving. If you shave everything you look goofy as a full grown man in my opinion.

Anyhow I agree with wearing white t-shirts under my shirts. Actually it keeps you cool and it absorbs sweat. A lady I teach with at the school sells Avon products on the side and they really have some good mens products. I use their roll-on deodorants without any staining problems and they have some really good scents.

Haha. I never knew they had deodorant. My neighbor is some big salesman for them. I believe he mainly focuses on the toothpaste though. The other day he was at my house having a big conversation with my parents about the toothpaste industry.

This person I work with has the WORST smelling deodorant ever. I didn't notice it as much today but last week he/she's deodorant was so strong I had to go home and take a shower. It was sooo nasty smelling it all day.

Anyways, Deodorant is such a nasty sounding word.

I do the same. From reading the posts here, it seems like very few do this.

I should point out that I don't give up on the white shirt until it's dead. Nobody will ever see it. I have some that I've had almost 10 years.

Wash yourself and your clothes regularly. ;)

I don't see the reason for using a deodorant. You might as well carry a can of air freshener with you.

I've been using Degree soft solid anti-perspirant for years and haven't had any problem with stains. The invisible stuff is there to make people feel desirable but it doesn't last long enough to bother using it.

What one must understand is that deodorants are mostly antiperspirants, and they are antiperspirants by being waterproof. The main way that our deodorants are waterproof is via an aluminum based-compound, such as aluminum zirconium tricholorohydrex gly(cine) among others. When you combine sweat, bacteria, sebum, dead skin, a waterproofing gel/solid, and absorbent cotton shirts... what do you think is going to happen!? Of course it's going to leave residue.

What would seem to be the solution is to stop using deodorants with waterproofing compounds, be they aluminum-based, natural wax-based, or including any sorts of oils. But keep in mind that what you're left with won't do that great of a job, definitely won't prevent pit stains, and may still leave you with discolorations on your undershirts--this time of a more yellowy kind from your sweat, sebum, etc, and the bacteria growing under your arms.

Personally, I use Mitchum unscented, which has the strongest concentration of the aluminum compounds on the market and has almost no scent (what is there is pleasantly boring and does not clash with any cologne or bodyscent in my experience)... and I wear white undershirts that I replace every year or so. If build-up gets bad, I bleach 'em with hot water and let them soak for a while.

looks like i'm not alone ... i guess i have nearly tried all available brands already and i still haven't a deodorant which actually worked more than 6 hours or so in actually preventing sweat

i simply sweat too much ... well amputation is still an option (shaving only makes it worse since i get sweat running down in drops which isn't pleasent either)
