I've got two friends who are twins looking for a computer to share. One of them has fallen in love with my macs and the other one simply doesn't care if it's windows or mac os. I told them that I would try to find them a mac running 10.4.

Apparently, one just wants to use a word processing program (any one, I don't think that it really matters) and the other wants to use it to store all of his music and pictures (he said that it's not a lot of stuff, under 10gb). Also, they were both interested in storing a few videos or movies on it to use with Front Row or another built in app (I don't remember if the G4s have Front Row...).

I can't really see their budget being over $400+shipping. I know that this won't get a very modern system, but that won't be needed. I'm interested to see what's here on macrumors. If there's anything good, we'll have two new converts :)

Thanks

If it helps you make up your mind any, I have a 2003 iBook G4 at 1 Ghz with a Radeon 9200 Mobility. That is pretty much the same exact thing as the Mac Mini in terms of specs (even uses the same laptop style hard drives), barring CPU speed (some minis are faster).

This iBook is still a good performer for everyday tasks. Safari, chat programs, iPhoto (over 900 high-resolution photos), and even Photoshop CS1.

iTunes however makes this thing choke up with coverflow enabled, so if they were going to use that make sure they have more ram (at least a gigabyte), at 640 mb this iBook's ram gets eaten alive by coverflow in iTunes and the system becomes noticeably choppy.

So if you max out the G4 mini's ram it would be perfectly alright for those tasks I mentioned above.

If you get the original software CD's with the G4 mini, it should also come with Appleworks, a great word processor (shame apple abandoned it).

Any luck finding them a Mini? A friend of mine might be interested in selling his.
I'll check with him, and post back if he's interested.

I have a 12" G4 Powerbook 1.33ghz with 60 GB Hard Drive, 768 MB Ram, Combo drive, running tiger I can let go for 350+ shipping

The only problems with it is the Ethernet port is sometimes tempermental and the sensor that puts it into sleep when you close the lid doesnt work, but you just press power and select sleep and then it works perfectly.

But if your using WiFi it runs great.

I also have a 15" 1.25ghz powerbook with 1GB of ram, 80 GB Hard drive, Superdrive, running Tiger I would let go for 400+ shipping.

It runs great, just one ding on the back, but has no hardware problems, I will also include a sleeve with the 15"
