Apple Finally Orders iMac LCDs - shipment begins May

Shipments for the iMac will begin in May with an initial monthly volume of 10,000 units, which could then rise to 30,000 units in the future. Digitimes reports that HannStar and LG Philips are the only two companies supplying LCDs for the new iMac, which is manufactured by Quanta Computer.

If the figures quoted in the article are correct, this figure translates roughly into US$280 per LCD.

Seems like apple sure is taking its time getting the iMac shortage figured out, but at least they have finally taken the necessary steps.

At the current speed that they've promised to ship units, 10,000 LCD's will last them TWO DAYS... so they must be expecting much less demand one month down the road.

The key part of the article is that they ordered a total of 200,000 LCDs, of which 10,000 were shipped. So they're planning on quite a few more months of this (30,000/month max puts us well into November).

The article says that HannStarr AND LG Philips are the only suppliers of screens for the new iMacs. The figure of 10,000 monthly with a total of 200,000 is only the part to be provided
by HannStarr. The article does not cite a figure for LG Philips.
And what about Samsung, purported to be the main supplier from the beginning?

At a quoted production rate of 5,000 a day, or roughly 110,000 a month, counting only business days, the HannStarr screens would provide 10-30% of the needed screens for a month's production, depending on where in the 10,000-30,000 range they provided in any month.

The big unknowns are how many screens LG Philips will provide and if the HannStarr and LG Philips screens are in addition to those already being made by ________ (Samsung?)
