I've heard quite often that Apple has given discounts and free upgrades to students who've purchased hardware just a few months before the release of their latest operating system.
To what extent is this true and does it still apply?

I think it is usually a month before, and it applies to anyone who purchases new hardware.

When they announce the shipping date - probably Friday October 26 - they will also announce the "free" upgrade deal between now and shipping date. It usually has a "you pay us $5-$10 shipping fee" attached to it. You can't count on anything before they announce it.

a few months is not true. basically they'll off an up-to-date program that costs ~$20 for it. i think its a one-two week time frame or such before the release date.
