Allow me to be the first to say, then, that the graphics card they chose sucks. Also, the backlighting isn't very even, and it's unfathomable to me why they didn't use the quad cores.

I call BS just for the simple fact that Apple isn't going to use an OS that's coming out in 3 months in advertising materials for a computer that's possibly coming out in a week. It would confuse people ("But the ad has the shiny transparent menu bar!") and it would possibly be false advertising.

Well I think it came from the original iMac G5 fake photos that were taken in an elevator, didn't it? :D

Also, usually these things are blurry because the blurriness helps hide a crappy photoshop job ;)

While these pictures are obviously fake, I could see them if Leopard is coming out in the very beggining of October, anouncing an iMac and delaying its shipping until Leopard is out, they have had almost that long of delays shipping new computers before, and if that was true it wouldn't make sense for them to use an OS that will not be on it to advertise it.

I love it! All these mock ups are all influenced upon the current models of the time! I wish someone would have the foresight to think ahead and imagine what Apple 'could' be thinking, rather than pretty much basing a design on today's hardware.

Apparently, this new rumoured new iMac design is supposed to be something completely different that is gonna blow people's socks off!

I said a day ago that I think the new iMac will look like a ACD. Now I'm glad it doesn't. :p But it could just be the bad photoshop job.

Either way, Few problems. The ACD has the power button on the size. Apple also started to arrange the back connectors horizontal instead of vertical sometime during the iMac G5 lifetime (I think was during the switch over to Intel).

Among other things. I still think it will look similar to a ACD, but not this similar.

Wasn't it the 'iHome' media centre at Paris two years ago?

n August 2004, just prior to the release of the iMac G5, these bogus iMac images appeared around the Internet. These established the tradition that the best "spy" shots should be taken in elevators. These pictures appear to originate from an Appleinsider discussion where the prankster eventually comes clean.

Dudes... It might look like the ACD in that it will be thin and Aluminum-y, but it's not going to look EXACTLY like one. Jeez.

From a marketing perspective, and from the perspective of Mr. Ive's ego, it would be really dumb to have a brand-new, "freshly redesigned" product look like a display from several years ago.

If this is really the design for the new iMac (which i have little doubt, that it will differ much), then i am very disapointed.
The imac line has been going downhill (design-wise) since, well the iLamp.
The original design was the best. I would very much rather have that, with a flat screen, based on desktop parts and the option to upgrade the insides [add pci cards, graphic and sound cards (maybe doing SLI), processor and multiple hard drive upgrades].

Ok... let's think about this for a second...

Intel iMac was not a redesign. It was just a processor upgrade for the iMac line.
PowerBooks and MacBook Pros are still essentially the same product; they changed the name and put in a different processor.
Same goes for Mac Pro.
Mac Mini is not a redesign.

The point is not that Apple wouldn't KEEP the existing design and up the specs. The point is that if they redesign it, they won't redesign it to look like an old display.

The potential for customer confusion alone makes it a laughable idea.

no chance you'd be able to fit a desktop hard drive in there!!!

It's not peeing, that's the power cord! It's yellow so you know there's electricity going through it. It's clear when it's not plugged in.

I'm still laughing over that one...:D:D:D

When you compare the current image of the iMac with the one on that french site you just can conclude it is photoshopped.

Just for the sake of argument, just because it's Photoshopped doesn't mean it is fake. Apple also uses Photoshop.

The point is not that Apple wouldn't KEEP the existing design and up the specs. The point is that if they redesign it, they won't redesign it to look like an old display.

It should also be noted that according to the rumormill that Apple was also much more focused on making the switch in the architechture from PowerPC to Intel, and that after the iPhone and all of their other projects, this is their first chance to really take a shot at updating the design of the current line. So all of the Intel Macs share a relatively close design (some accomodations were made for size and features) to their PowerPC brethren.

I'd have to admit, that having an iMac with the same design as the Cinema Displays may introduce confusion, but it would sure make a second display fit in pretty seamlessly.

Any one know at what time UK fans can see real images from Apple?

Just out of curiosity. Who would be really upset if I asked this question:

I want to buy a new iMac should I get it now or wait?

Just kidding. I do not think these pictures are real but I really like the way the ACD looks. I wouldn't mind an iMac that looked like it. But I still don't think these are real.

Ok... let's think about this for a second...

Um...thats exactly what I said in my post.

Sorry for the double post, but this image mockup was posted at Gizmodo. Of course not claiming to be the actual thing, however, I believe that this is a much much more plausible rendition of what we will see tomorrow.

*sigh*

No, that's not what you said. You said:

You guys keep saying Apple wouldn't reuse an old design...but they've been doing that for years.

They've never gone BACK to an old design from a NEW one.

iMac G5 - Intel iMac: Same design
TiBook - AluBook - Macbook Pro: Same design
Powermac G5 - Mac Pro: Same design
G4 Mac Mini - Intel Mac Mini: Same design.

None of these are example of redesigning a product so it looks like an OLDER product, so they're irrelevant.

Why would they NOT put an iMac into an ACD's case?

Because they've never gone BACK to an OLDER design, and because it would be ridiculous to make a sexy new desktop computer look exactly like an old display.

I agree that this looks pretty reasonable. I think the parallel to iPhone is taken a bit too far, and the proportions of the black bars are a bit unappealing, but it makes sense overall.

a chrome surround will never be added to the edge of display, apple knows it market and designers will not want any edging that could detract/redirect the users focus from the display. Christ imagine if the sun hits the chrome at the wrong angle and it hits the user in the eye, can anyone say lawsuit :)

Look at the current designs, the imac is a simple monotone edge all the way round, the acd is the same and is coloured a specific shade of grey to aid in colour accuracy. If the new imac is going aluminium I would expect the standard colour (could have options) to be the grey used on the acd.

The title of this thread is misleading. It should read:

"New iMac Pictures Leaked?" instead of "New iMac Pictures Leaked"

No one here knows any of the "mock-ups" posted here are authentic, and none of these have even been confirmed.

Still great iCandy, though. ;)

It's now in the power cable.

Actually the included keyboard has all the parts built into it. So when you want to change your DVD you don't even have to get up since it's in the keyboard.

I find it impossible to believe that no pictures or data about a new imac have been leaked just a few hours before the unveil.

Why is that computer urinating?

That's the LEAK.

It was leaking on these photos. Thus the blur.

I thought the information-y thingy said it was CS2 for Windows. I know there is boot camp and all that but apple using windows for these kind off things, unlikely. Steve probably gets sick looking at the vista desktop.

The new iMac is bound to take on a new form factor, the same as it did the twice before. ;) Apple wont 'base' it on the same design.

I think the iMac is going to be replaced by something groundbreaking. Jonathan Ive probably labored night and day over it. I think the successor will be:

the iBeige

FEATURES:
-3.5" floppy drive (1.4 mb is enough for ANYTHING)
-CRT extra flicker monitor (who cares about the environment?)
-Tray loading CD-ROM (doubles as cup holder)
-56k modem for downloading from Napster at lightning speeds!
-Unnecessarily large tower to take up as much desk space as possible
-Beautiful beige enclosure

Oh and one more thing... I know you've been waiting for this for a long time, but I think you'll agree it was truly worth the wait...

Leopard has secretly been leading a double life. Come October we're going to drop the Leopard code name and officially release our new operating system... Copland!
