Panther, panther, panther.
The trick is: If you buy at least one mac a year (which I always seem to do), the ADC membership really pays for itself with the hardware discount.
Of course, I've heard that you could find Panther on Limewire, but I wouldn't know anything about that.

I am running Panther 7b21, it runs alot better than WWDC preview, enough that it is now my primary OS. The only bugs that I have noticed are that labels don't are now broke, and iTunes doesn't work when I connect my iPod to it. FCP 4 works now though, and it and all the apps (livetype, soundtrack) load up in half the time and run much faster. Panther rocks, can't wait for the final release.

I'm running Jag, even though I have Panther available to me. (The builds have been pirated rather extensively, do a little searching in you favorite P2P application, but of course that's not "legal").
Although, I have an old legacy 68k Mac I use quite a bit, so I could say I'm in for OS 8 and earlier :D

Those fortunate enough to have attended the WWDC in June received a Beta copy of Mac OS 10.3 Panther on CD. The WWDC stands for World Wide Developers Conference, held in San Francisco. That way developers can be programming there software to run on Panther. Hopefully to develope new and more software specifically for Panther!
I'm one of the 4.83% still running Mac OS 9!

Um...that sounds like a big, hairy, MicroSoft-style bug. With iTunes and the iPod so integrated, it sounds less like a bug and more like "Panther doesn't support the iPod yet."

i'm running 10.2 server...
and to everyone asking "how are you running panther already?" i would like to direct your attention to file sharing and people who don't care about the NDA that apple makes developers agree to. whenever apple tries to release something to a few people, it gets out and spreads to anyone that has patience enough to look for it.

WTF!.. dont use your PC because you have a prob with open windows! I have a program that allows you to have as many desktops as you want. Its sooo sweet. I have it set up on a grid, 2 rows, and like 3 colums so I have what... 6 desktops. And a little window just floats in the lower left hand corner of my screen with my diff desktops. I just click on a blank one and open something new and then ONLY that desktop will have that program or things I open in it. If i want something else or a clear desktop, I just click on a blank desktop. Love that program. Buy it! Its pretty cheap.. cant think of the name though.. maybe somebody else here knows..

twitch: i've heard of a multiple desktop program b4...but it won't really work unless you got that apple studio display (i.e. 23" monster).
If you do, of course, power to you...i'm still on a "regular" 17" NEC Multisync.
And...to answer the poll, i'm on WindowsXP Pro SP1 since i haven't had an Apple computer since my mom brought one back like 15 years ago from work (Dupont chemical company).
Maybe some1 will let me borrow their G5? Someone at college will have one, i KNOW it :)

Damn, that's almost a dealbreaker for me. I was just about to install Panther, too.
I'm on the WWDC DP (with the test update) and iTunes works great with the iPod. The problem is that I'm currently using my iPod as backup for my purchased music. I've already mistakenly lost three whole albums because I thought they could be redownloaded the last time I wiped my box. Won't happen again.
I can't wait for a version of Toast to come with Panther support, since Mac OS X doesn't directly support one of my CD-RW drives.
I voted Panther, though I use commercial UNIX variants just as often.

What on earth are you talking about? I use it on my 12" PB. The program, for anyone who's interested, is CodeTek Virtual Desktop (http://www.codetek.com/php/virtual.php). It's really a fine piece of software, and it can help with application clutter. However, it's not a substitute for dual monitors.
For the record, to be on topic, Jaguar, though I'm looking forward to Panther (and not terribly interested in downloading an illegal copy that might not let my iPod sync...)

It's always been a bit too buggy for me, especially compared to the smoothness of using virtual desktops on other systems (Linux and Solaris.) It just seems... hacked.
Also, the latest versions of CTVD don't work too well with Panther, especially when you throw Expose into the mix.

Well..... I am running Windows XP. IT's really not as bad as a lot of people make it out to be, however. I am going to switch eventually. That is, when my computer goes out of date. It's two years old and I upgrade every three years. I can't wait to be running OSX in a year!

the only operating systems i use are mac os x, win2k and linux. my main os was jaguar, but now it's panther because i think the developer previews and 7b21 are very nice (even though it is a beta).
codetek virtual desktop is awesome, but i still prefer using multiple monitors, it's just more...convenient.

I run Jaguar on my TiBook which is my primary Computer. (And hey it is light years ahead of M$ so I don't need Pather. :)) At my office I have one NT (The only PC I use in the office. Just for the limited bookkeeping I do. (It is a Pentium Pro 180. :D) 2 Windows 2000 (One desktop and one Laptop, still 10x more stable than XP, but more functional than NT) and one XP Pro machine.
At home My wife uses a XP home machine that I bought a couple of months ago for $325 after rebates. :)
(I didn't count my 2 servers (OS X Jag and M$ small Biz server 2000))

...I'm running jag. Depends on what you like, if it weren't for two things, I would have dumped OS 8 and 9 for 10.0 Server (pre Aqua days) as my main OS: Final Cut Pro came out and my IDE PCI card wasn't supported until 10.0 Developer Release 4 (or was it the Public Beta? I can't remember)
Heaven for me was when Final Cut Pro 3 came out as a native OS X app.
In fact, I never would have bought a Mac if it weren't for the Apple/NeXT merger.
BTW - I'm on Jaq now ( don't have ADC Premier at my current job so I cannot get Panther :( )

Same here. The fact that they based the new OS off of NEXTSTEP/4.4BSD and had the forethought to include a bunch of FreeBSD tools as well, combined with the switch over to OPENSTEP (now Cocoa) made me make the switch.
Just basing it off of a *BSD or Linux wouldn't have been enough for me. I *like* the fact that they're using a proprietary GUI and application layer. They're doing a better job than anyone else could have.
I missed the vote, but I do have a question...
My home machine is an 8500 with an aftermarket 400Mhz G4 Card (NewerTechnology...remember them?). It has a bit more than 128MB of RAM, and I'm currently running OS 9.x
Assuming that I want to keep this machine running - - asssume as a web server - - I have a couple of questions:
a) What's the highest OS it can run?
Eg, can it run X (and what revisions)?
b) If it can run X, _should_ I do so for this application?
c) If not X, then what OS revision would be best suited?
Oh yeah, one more:
d) Assuming that I can/should go to X, what's a good (cheap :-) source for an older version of X?

I believe that the simple answer to your question is 'yes, but...'
Yes, you can run X on your system, but you may need to use a third party piece of software to be able to do it. Specifically, the software in question is called XPostFacto (http://eshop.macsales.com/OSXCenter/XPostFacto/) .
Now the question of whether or not you should is another one entirely. If you're going to be running this computer as a web server, I would tend to recommend installing Linux on it. If you're not comfortable with Linux, then I would recommend OS X. I would place use of OS 9 and before lowest on my list of recommendations. (The built in Apache in both Linux and OS X makes for a very easy web hosting experience...)
Finally, a good source for older versions of OS X? That's easy. Buy a copy on eBay. They usually have copies available, and you can usually get them for not a lot of money.

It doesn't have anything to do with feeling ahead of everyone else, at least not for me.
I was curious and wanted to try it out. The benefits and enhancements that Panther offers makes it worth running something just slightly unstable.

These are weekly developer releases. There are simple programming mistakes that take out entire features. Apple wants to get the new stuff tested and they know they will fix the bugs before showtime so they tell people what to test and what they want fixed. The developer notes for the latest version reported that Firewire wasn't working. That would explain the iPod. There's also some formatting problems with ITMS, but that's with the new WebCore v1.1

CP/M was the basis for MS-DOS and, later, DR-DOS. I've run versions of CP/M on both an old 8088-based Intel PC and a Commodore 128! I recall a version that ran on 68K chips, but have never used it.
Both CP/M and DR-DOS are both alive and kicking (if only barely.) Open source development still continues with CP/M, while DR-DOS went through a few sales (including to Caldera, which used it as the basis of a lawsuit against Microsoft) and is about to have a new version released.
