I run a XP professional desktop and I was able to share the internet from my XP system, the pb can use internet but I cant transfer file betwee the two systems.. XP cant see the pb and vice versa... is there something that I am not doing right? When I try to use "Connect Server" and enter the ip of 192.168.0.1 it wont do anything... but i can access internet all these times.. any reason why?

192.168.0.1 is usually your router's IP address. to access it, type the address into safari or whichever browser you use. are you sure that you turned windows sharing on with the powerbook? this is located in the system preferences under the "sharing" tab.

I am not using a router... the connection is like this. DSL modem connected to XP system directly with NIC1, NIC2 conenct to the powerbook. Internet Sharing with XP... therefore yes, 192.168.0.1 is a gateway and also the IP of the XP system as well. i just cant connect to the XP system...

You know you can't connect direct to just an IP? e.g. smb://192.168.0.1 will not connect to anything. You have to connect to a share on the IP. e.g. smb://192.168.0.1/sharename

Are you able to ping the PC from the Mac, and vice versa?

When you connect to the PC you should have a login box come up.
In workgroup you should put the hostname of the XP PC, then in username, the username of the account you want to connect with on the XP PC, and then the password for that account. Are you doing this?

For example. If your PC is called MYXPPC, and your account on that PC is under the username of SLJ, then to connect to it from OS X you would enter the following...

WORKGROUP: MYXPPC
USERNAME: SLJ
PASSWORD: *********

You don't have a firewall running on the XP box do you? If so, turn it off! ;)

hit cmd+K in Finder and it should find the computer name for you. Click on it and hit ok. If that doesn't work, have you restarted you XP box? Mine didn't work till XP restarted.
