I'm certain the GPU is more than adequate for my tasks. If gaming's what you're after, get a PC or a Pro, or realize that the iMac will do an adequate job on most games anyway. The form factor is why many people buy it, and shoving a GPU with it's own fan in there would adversely affect that.
I don't see why the iMac can't meet both our needs. The previous version had BTO upgradable graphics and I am hoping beyond hope that they will do that again.

I don't see the problem with the iMac video cards. ATi HD 2600XT is a pretty good mid to high end card. DirectX 10 support too. I've very happy with the redesign. Roll on Rev B. :p

Actually I am more excited about Office 2008 coming then this new iWork. Laugh at me...call me an idiot...whatever you want, but I want a product that I KNOW will work right when I email a file to people with Windows. You can say...convert this or convert that...but I just like something that works. That is the Apple approach.
No matter what iWork is still a lightweight compared to Office. I don't give much credit to Microsoft, but people saying that they want to force Microsoft to dump Office for the Mac is stupid. Not saying that you said it, but a lot of fanboys do.
I' not in the corporate world any longer - i'm cool NOT being on Office.
I've been using NeoOffice since i got my MBP in Feb, i'm happy with it!
But i'll get a copy of iWork now that it has a spreadsheet.
The price - you can't beat it!

The video card in the new iMac is a piece of trash. If gaming doesn't float your boat, you have no worries, but if you think you're going to be able to play even 1-2 year old games at the native resolution of the iMac's LCD display, think again:
http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=3023&p=8
The above chart shows the results of a Prey timedemo running at 1600x1200. Prey was released over a year ago and is based on the Doom 3 engine, which was released in 2004. Since the result of a timedemo is an average framerate, you want to see results of 50-60 fps so that you can be sure you're not dipping down below 30 fps very often (which would cause the game to stutter). As you can see, the Radeon HD 2400 XT is at the very bottom of the chart with 14 fps, and the 2600 Pro is second to last with 25 fps. Note that the 2600 Pro does not even run the game as fast as the nVidia 7600 GT that was available in the last-generation 24'' iMac.
So much for Apple's games initiative... what a load of crock.Perhaps they'll be upgradable? Or a higher option? This does seem a bit *******...

I can tell just from the screenshots that it will be better suited to a lot of home, consumer users.
Will it offer the power of Excel? No way. Will businesses use it as a serious number crunching tool? Nope. Will it be easier to do things like family budgets, wedding planning lists and so on? Almost certainly. Apple went 100% the right direction on this. Trying to out Excel Excel would be suicide.

I'm extremely disappointed. My 23" HD Aluminum Display is three years old, and to date is the least updated product from Apple. For all the professionals who use Mac Pro's/Power Mac's and would like/need an update (I personally know photographers who would love an IR sensor for the Apple remote to use for showing clients work, and I personally would like a built in iSight), I feel as though Apple's constant reminder of their Pro line is just a lot of hot water. The Mac Pro line is given the least amount of attention, and for those who say it's a small market, who cares, well, that would be incorrect as there are a LOT of people in that market who care. :(
I can see where you guys are coming from with the lack of update for the Pro line. But how I take it is that Steve is trying to bring the rest of the product line up to their (the Pro) level.
Steve was quoted by Engadget as saying: "...Two elements we've used in a lot of pro products: aluminum and glass. Phenomenal materials. Take aluminum, we use this in our pro products..."
While I agree that the Displays need to be updated to include iSight and everything else on the current displays.
Maybe he's not updating the Mac Pros (or at least delaying it longer) since the Professionals using the Pro Line can upgrade the computers themselves. It's not like an iMac with no chance to upgrade the video cards or HDD's.
Again I'm not saying that they shouldn't have to upgrade the Pro Line, I do agree they NEED to upgrade the displays. But that's just my reasoning for why they haven't upgraded the Mac Pro line for so long.

Honestly a multitouch iMac wouldn't be that useful if you use the demo iPhones at the Apple Store you see how they are unresponsive compared to using a mouse, trackpad or keyboard, even bluetooth. Also there will be limited use and hard on the hand... No real benefit with the current technology, yet... The iPhone is a better use of the technology just because it helps maximize screen use and functionally but it is a technology that still needs some cleanup work.

Of the many ACDs I've seen people use, they usually use it at an angle or in a way that an iSight may make it difficult to either use the iSight or the display. Not everyone looks at the screen perpendicularly.

All speculation.
Yep. So is the idea the it will immediately supplant Excel in terms of feature-richness.
In fact, I'll go out on a limb and say that Numbers cannot immediately supplant Excel as an industry standard (even if it beats Excel on every feature-for-feature comparison) for the same reason that Pages hasn't supplanted Word: Perception of interoperability, and brand recognition.
Now, it has been known to happen from time to time. (Anybody remember Lotus 1-2-3?) But it's usually an evolutionary process.

Why do so many people care about mac mini? It always seemed kinda dumb to me.
It's important that Apple have a true entry-level option - one that meets the widely-accepted concept of "entry-level" - and the percentage of their userbase that actually buys it has surprisingly little to do with it.

Yeah, I agree, the Mac Pro line is fine. I got mine October last year, and it is upgradeable. Heck, I could throw in two quad core Intel processor chips for an 8-core system, throw in more HDD's, upgrade my video card, etc. However, it's the display line that needs updating, as you stated. Front Row isn't available unless you use the "control-esc" keys as there isn't a built-in IR sensor for the Mac Pro to use, as well as many other issues. I'm just irked that they update something as trite as the keyboard, but haven't touched the display line in years...

For $2,299 I can get a Mac Pro with my student discount. Granted, I'd need a display as well, but I'd be getting more for my money with a Mac Pro (more speed, more RAM, more HDD space, upgradeability).
I like the iLife '08 update, I'll be getting that, and possibly a new keyboard to go with my Mac Pro system. However, no ACD updates, no mouse update with the keyboard, .Mac is eh, so so. Over all, very anti-climatic. Did the keyboard need more refreshing than the display line? I don't think so.

I dunno. Excel is pretty much the only good, solid software that MS makes IMO.
I was terribly disappointed in the iWork announcements in that other than putting Numbers in and making a "word processor mode" option for Pages there is not much new here at all. I work in pretty much an all-mac environment of 300-400 individuals who have been using Apple computers since Apple Classic days, and no-one, no-one uses iWork for anything.
You can't actually use iWeb to make any kind of decent WebPage, because you can't ever get at the code. It's basically a way for your Mum to make web pages. Similarly, Pages only works for you if you have never used a word processor or a typewriter in your life. The metaphor is (again) more in line for an adult, non-technical user with no computer experience (your Mum again or perhaps Nan). While the addition of Numbers and the Word Processor mode of Pages are welcome, the way Steve breezed over them like that just makes me think that iWork is not likely an Office competitor even now.
Have to use it to be sure of course, but this was *the* moment when an Office competitor from Apple would make the most traction IMO. Unless iWork is way more robust than it looks, they might have dropped the ball here. Apple is in sore need of some "serious" apps that are not just for Mum and the kids. Not everyone just wants to make movies of washing the doggy. They have the high end apps for creative types like FinalCut Pro and Aperture, but nothing in this category for anyone else.
Outside of the Pro apps, this entire category of "serious" applications is filled by two "outside" vendors, Microsoft (for Office) and Adobe (for CS Suite). These are arguably the worst companies in the software business and the apps they make are expensive bloated ports of bloated, poorly coded Windows junk. IMO the market is wide-open right now for replacements for these two aging purveyors of crap software.
I truly *hope* that iWork is now an "Office competitor," but nothing about today's announcement makes me confident that it is.

Since when did gamers look to Macs?
Have we really given up so easily? Why are we not advocates for the growth of Mac gaming? Would it not be healthier for the strength of the Mac platform to insist on rectifying the situation? Apple has chosen to not provide an xMac - does that mean we as consumers should shut up? Shouldn't we at least see what can be done within existing constraints?

Why do so many people care about mac mini? It always seemed kinda dumb to me.
The iMac's video card is inadequate for MSWindows gaming. On the other hand, the video card is overkill for non-graphics programming, web browsing, and other business office oriented stuff. I already have a display that I like. I love OSX, but I'm not paying $1200 when I can get something that fits the bill at a little over half the price.
That should be enough reasons. It probably makes business sense for Apple not to fill every product niche. But that doesn't mean it makes sense as a consumer. If the mac-mini isn't reasonably price competitive, then that means Apple doesn't get my business.

Yeah, I was glad to see them go to C2D, so now they have 64-bit capable across the line. The new mini's are packed with the guts of essentially the previous rev of MacBooks (Nov '06) which is what I am on now, and am very happy with. I think this brings them back up to being a pretty decent competitor in $600-800 range.

This is my first ever post :D, yet i've been reading the posts year for at least a year. Ok so enough with the formalities.
The more and more i look at the new imac on apple's site, the more and more its growing on me. I'm sure the first encounter at apple stores is going to blow me away. Usually the way apple products roll.

Wow...I didn't see the HD2600 coming. I thought the 8600GT was a safe bet, maybe even a chance for a GTS. And no BTO...this is just depressing. Everything else about them looks great, and I was so ready to get one...but I just can't bring myself to pay $1800+ for a computer that can't even play games that came out a year ago. Man...what a big "Eff You."
For everyone else that doesn't care about ever playing a game, congrats on the good updates.

I am a bit bummed that they took the apple icon off of the command key on the keyboards now. Its not needed, but its just been there for so long.
That was the reason that previously everyone thought the keyboard pics were fakes.

Dude, today Apple spanked Dell, Microsoft & Adobe.
Dell - on the crappy look and clumbsiness of their computers
Microsoft - on how they bloated Excel and made it tough to use
Adobe - on the really poor the magic wand tool is
I almost blacked out from the excitement!
Steve, tell your developers, "y'all rock!"

I will still be buying - but will probably stick to my PS3 for gaming. That's what I've usually done, I'm more of a console gamer, but am still big time disappointed. Maybe the next iteration will have something along the lines of the 8600... *sigh*:(

Yeah but spelling out what a key does instead of using a computer-nerd-jargon is the kind of thing Apple does, that nobody else ever thinks of doing because once those marketing people learn the jargon they all use it to seem cool with the engineers. Apple's marketing team has a clue. They know the computer needs to work for people who don't design computers. That's why I knew the end of the "Apple Key" was real.

My Apple store is setting them up right now. I asked if they had the C2E configuration, they aren't sure. My paypal transfer from the sale of my 24" iMac (white) hasn't gone into my checking yet, when it does (hopefully by Thursday afternoon) I'll buy the C2E iMac. *sigh* Can't get that vid card out of the back of my head though...

be sure you check this review:

On Monday 6th August 4pm ordered mac mini base model
Tuesday 7th it was shipped.
Waiting for arrival. (Wednesday 8th)
Hoping to GOD it is new one, however i suspect not.
PLEASE HELP
What should i do?
All that software and hardware upgrades for less money?
Be serious Please, this is a big investment for me, and I feel Apple has screwed me, as has the rumor that the mini would die.
I thought they'd kill it, so i ordered one. and now i lose out.

If its the older version, just refuse delivery.

Via Crucial, you can order a set of 2 1GB sticks of 200pin DDR2-PC2 5300 ram for $101.
I'm wondering if the extra $400 is worth the up from 2.4GHz to 2.8GHz Extreme...

At first I thought no num pad on the BT keyboard was a huge problem, but after thinking more about it I don't think it will be that big of a deal.
I do most of my computing on my MBP so it will be pretty much no different for me.
I do too - and needed an extended keyboard to use instead. It's driving me CRAZY to not have it - i'd been waiting to see what htey did.
Now i have to figure out what to do :(
ETA: and that is the point, i might as well use my MBP - not have another keyboard, i'm not gaining anything from buying it?!

Will my money be refunded if i refuse delivery????
And won't that take ages? or just keep trying to ship the same one to me?
Also it's 5.30am and the apple phone line doesn't open till 8am.
I will be on it straight away.
I've checked my order status, and it says that i may be able to get a slight refund (like $28) but nothing about an exchange!
Also the order status is down for maintenance so i can't cancel my order right now

First call and ask. If its the older one and you are happy with that one, complain, I am sure you will get some sort of compensation (50-100 bucks back).
if you want the new one, then ask them what to do. Probably just have to send it back or refuse to accept it when delivered. Will be more waiting time, but is worth it for the Core 2 duo for the same price.

here's my opinion:
black back = ugly dell ripoff
video card = laughable
glossy only screens because the consumer wanted it = total lie

in my mind the only improvements are slimmer and faster processor
for everything else, gimme the previous revision

i'm sorry, how do we know it's santa rosa? i thought santa rosa was 2.2 and 2.4, not 1.83 and 2.0. as far as i can tell, the mini is using the first c2d chipset, not the newest iteration (i.e. sr)

For those who are lucky enough to go to an Apple Store and buy one today, you think you could post a Youtube video if you have the capabilities to do so of the beautiful new machine?
I was also holding off on switching hoping to get into computer gaming for the first time, but seeing as how I've gone this long without it, I suppose I will just stick with my PS3 and 360. However, I was really hoping that I would be able to play Crysis on it, but I will still get the iMac none the less. Too bad they didn't add one more screw for graphics card accessibility, wonder why they are so reluctant to allow consumers to switch them out.

How exactly has Apple screwed you? You believed a non-APple rumour that the mac was about to be end of lifed. Which wasnt true. Your best bet is to return the mini when it arrives (unopened of course) and then just purchase a new one.

I've been waiting to switch/buy a mac for about 9 months. Initially I bought the rumours of an April release of Leopard so delayed and then I thought I would wait until the MBP and iMacs were released to see what was on offer. So going through a few WWDC's and Macworlds I'm still suprised at the hype machine that the apple community generates, some of the items on the wish list are unbelievable. It seems everyone wants the latest and greatest for the cheapest. That aint going to happen. For a while now Apple has been upgrading its hardware in small steps and as such the iMac update is a very decent one. I agree with many that the graphics card is dissapointing but thats about it. I cant see too many people buying a Mac for a gaming machine!
So, I am finally going to purchase a Mac :), probably the 20in, my question, Apples memory its expensive. Safer to buy through Apple store or is their better places online to get the memory?

No I am waiting for you :)
Is it worth going to the 24"? If so why?I'm up and running (partially) on the iMac now and a full review is still to come.
I will say that I was very hesitant about getting the 24". Why? Because when I got to the Apple store, they had none of the new iMacs on display, only the "old" ones. I compared a 20" and 24" since they were sitting right next to each other. There was absolutely nothing wrong with the 20", but I have a 20" monitor to go along with my PC and felt that it was too small. This was one of my reasons for going with the 24". I will say that this thing is huge though, I could have definitely bought the 20" and been just fine, in retrospect, and saved a few hundred dollars. However, this is not to be confused as to whether or not it was worth it, because it was, hands down. I'll post more once I've gotten OS X back to how it is on my laptop.

Apple has agreed to refund me, and take it back at no charge.

i'm glad you got what you wanted... however, in my opinion you've got it wrong... apple is trying to sell hardware, most people wouldn't care... they're still selling the old iMacs in the stores even after the new ones are announced.. they want to get rid of that inventory.
