repair permisssions from startup OR other system?

hey all,

I have a quick question,

If I have started up on a drive called drive 1, and I want to repair permissions on drive 1, Is it correct to boot from drive 1 and run disc utility. OR should I startup from another disc, say disc 2, and run repair permissions ON disc 1?

I get surprisingly different results if I do one versus the other.


Can anyone clear this up for me?

You should boot from the OS X install CD and run disk utility, then repair permissions from there.

Probably depends on how old your install cd is, but I would think you would be better off running disk util. from another drive/partition that has a fully updated version of the os. (Though I'm not sure if there have been any changes to disk util. in the 10.2.x updates.)

On some occasions, repairing permissions on the boot volume, I have run into problems with the changed permissions not sticking.

Ideally you should use a separate volume to boot from. However, if your OS X CD is old, it could indeed cause problems, as the system's permissions are affected by many software updates... You'll notice this sometimes when it says "we are now using special permissions ___ for filename".

For the most part, repairing permissions on your boot volume is OK. If it doesn't do what you were hoping, try another volume...

My install CD is quite old, which is why I have an updated system installed on a 9 gig internal drive I use as a temp backup drive. When I repair permissions having started up from this drive it finds literally hundreds of things to fix - whereas if I run from discutil from the startup disc ON the startup disc, very little is found...

Should I also use terminal and run fsck? What is this?
